As part of its announcement of the new iPhone operating system today, Apple has expanded the abilities of the iPhone's software development kit (SDK). Now app designers will be able to charge you money while you're using an app instead of just when you buy it. For example, you might be able to get Levels 1 to 10 of a game when you first get it from the App Store, but then it'll prompt you to cough up more cash if you want to see Levels 11 and above. Free apps won't be able to do this, though.
Anyone else totallycompletelyhugely excited to spend more money on their iPhone?

this is an awesome option for developers, and it's not like they have to use it.

They already have plans for it. Apple's whole strategy is "A vending machine in every pocket".

And that is left in the hands of the developers and the person who has the iphone to choose whether or not they want to do that. It's not like they force you to spend more money. IE: It's not going "you have reached level 11, your account has been deducted 2 dollars." You choose if you want to.

I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner. Many Palm OS apps work this way. Look at it is a demo version, and having to pay for the full one.
Though I think it's absolutely awful if they will make you pay for the app in the store, and then make you pay more for more functionality. That is terrible.

Seems the MOST useful idea is to enable this with free apps. Download the game for free, try the first three levels, then if you like it, pay the $2.99 for the rest of the levels and/or additional functionality, rather than have two different apps altogether.
