All you other pipsqueak cruise ships get out of the way — here comes the monstrous Oasis of the Seas, the most gigantic passenger vessel in the world. The $1.2 billion superliner is 1,181 feet long, and is powered by eight v12 engines cranking out 17,500 hp each to its three 20-foot-tall propellers.
The 215-foot-tall behemoth has two six-story towers with a total of 2,700 staterooms for its 5,400 passengers, creating a courtyard between them that's the size of a football-field. Filled with 400 tons of plants and the soil to grow them, they're calling that huge green area Central Park.
Now all the Royal Caribbean International cruise line has to do is find enough people who still have any money left, so they can fill up this cruise ship when it sails for the Caribbean out of Port Canaveral, Florida on the first of December.

My god..it's epic. And I mean that the way it used to mean before stupid kids starting saying "epic win" and "epic fail" and made the word lose its power. That first picture...on a ship.... Amazing.

I'm there...maybe not on it's maiden voyage, but sometime in the next year or two. Looks awesome.
By Xanapus at 1:36 PM ON 03/03/09
Wow, I've never been on a cruise ship because I'm sadly poor but that looks awesome. If I had the money I would so be there.

...so when will somebody build ARK II :D
By snoo at 3:53 AM ON 03/05/09
Let's hope they find a way to combat this Norwalk virus that seems to plague every cruise ship. Or else, it'll just be an even BIGGER sick ship.
By rjprod at 4:13 AM ON 03/05/09
I just got of the Mariner of the Sea's maiden west coast cruise. 7 days on the Mexican Riviera and NO problems at all. The Mariner was bigger than the other ships we encountered and I'm told you can fit the Mariner INSIDE the Oasis!!!

MMMM Big ships and maiden voyages, I wonder what will happen and when will the film come out :-P
By aorianstar at 9:27 AM ON 03/05/09
Any one ever seen Posident Adventure?!! This thing looks horribly top heavy! While it is very striking in its looks, I see a great big disaster waiting to happen! Oh and let's not forget what a huge taget this ship presents to terrorist and pirates!
Peace out, Ya'll!

where's the life boats?
By PeepsMcJuggs at 5:36 PM ON 03/05/09
Har har, BlueKnight. The life boats are on the outside. They might not have been installed yet, but ever since Titanic, all ships are required to have sufficient boats for the entire crew and passenger compliment.
This thing looks amazing. I wonder how obnoxiously crowded it would be, though.
By acoop1701 at 12:09 AM ON 03/06/09
Lol iminpain, that's the first thing I thought of too. But all joking aside it does look like a really cool ship and it would be amazing to take a cruise on it.
By arkblue at 2:41 AM ON 03/06/09
As for being top heavy: You don't see what is below the waterline
By OUTLANDER at 4:57 AM ON 03/06/09
So my question is, when will they construct a catamaran version? Maybe even one that is a pontoons version with a 30 dregree structure that's connected to the main ship's hull/supper structure. I beleive a catamaran version would be more stable, and the pontoon version would take a rogue wave better. Again, the pontoon with structure at 30 degrees (with respect to the water line) will be widen enough to stabilize the ship like never before. Now can you imagine a catamaran aircraft carrier (2 or 3 hulls bridged together) that is 3,000 feet in length that can be utilize by all forces? If the US had two (one on each main ocean), then there will be no more renting of foreign land anymore: A true man made island.
By zerocool at 3:26 PM ON 03/06/09
i heard that they are only putting enough lifeboats for half the passengers, AND that shes unsinkable!, so it doesnt matter.
By Skeptic at 8:30 PM ON 03/06/09
Of course there is a huge issue of whether or not the ship will sail at all. The company that bought it did not plan on the economic slowdown and is having trouble securing financing. The ship may wind up rusting away at a pier because no cruise company can count on selling enough cabins to turn a profit.

U. S. Marine Corps might be interested in this. The amphibious assault vehicles can go in the open space. Lots of room for supplies, marines, and heliocopters. But looks like a large target.
By sig43 at 9:50 AM ON 03/07/09
I thought the ship was to sail out of Port Everglades, not Canaveral, seems they are buiulding a new million plus dollar terminal for her there

If you are going to be on something this big, why bother going on a cruise at all? Why not just fly to wherever and stay in a hotel (which would probably be smaller)? Go Windjammer!
By attaboy at 2:40 PM ON 03/09/09
What a waste! Looks like a Mall riding a wave. I've got a real bad feeling about it becoming a target. What is it? A walk in the park, and then some shopping, Marge? Marge? Where are you Marge. I have to agree with WULF, if I want some good times at sea, a Windjammer would be the way to go

cool

I'm a big fan of ships of any kind and this one is awesome. The amount of things you can do packed into one space. Albeit a very large space, is quite amazing. Also, FYI.. the rich don't take cruises, the rich have yachts. Ha ha ha.

Outlander: Now can you imagine a catamaran aircraft carrier ?
-------------------------------------------------
I don't see us going to a larger (catamaran) carrier until we find a cheaper way of building them. Besides, once you take something like that into one of the "lesser" oceans or gulfs (like the Persian), you wouldn't be able to turn around and you'd have to back it out.
No, I think we'll be heading toward smaller carriers with much less radar signature. They'll probably be designed for VTOL aircraft instead of the flat top we know and love today. Cheaper, smaller, and with upcoming advances in propulsion, faster too.

I agree with Aorianstar -my words exactly a top-heavy disaster waiting to happen. Imagine a 90 foot wave in a storm and the amount of casualties. Unsinkable? Didnt we hear that about the Titanic??
