Japanese architects condense an entire home into a 3-meter-cubed space

Paco-by-Jo-Nagasaka.jpgJapanese architect Jo Nagasaka and the Schemata Architecture Office have come up with a home design that rethinks just how much space one person needs. 6,000 square feet? 600? Well, try 30 square feet.

The Paco home has a hammock to sleep on, a Japanese-style recessed desk, and a sink, toilet and shower all in a crate that's a 3-meter-cube. It's not intended to replace where you live now, but rather to supplement it. It could be a beach house, a portable office — anything, really, as long as you find a way to lug it into place and hook up the water. Trying to open that hatch-like roof to get in doesn't look like the most comfortable solution, either, though maybe that's a doggy door on the side.

Still, toss some posters on the wall, maybe put a rug down, and you've got yourself a happy little home. Check out the gallery below for more of the Paco house.

It looks like a dumpster.....

By Rampant Gnome at 3:08 PM ON 03/18/09

There does appear to be a normal style door on the "back." You can see it in the picture with the dude showering, and kind of see it in the out door picture.

but what about a kitchen to cook in? i would hate not being able to cook

By Mycroft at 3:45 PM ON 03/18/09

This is how Al Gore wants us all to live. Except him. He'll get to keep his seven bathroom palace.

By snakerake at 3:48 PM ON 03/18/09

This look like the kind of place you stay in if your looking to become insane. Nice photoshopping too....ha

3m^2 = 95ft^2
Still not a lot of space to work with. Put a lot of the infrastructure under a 2ft raised floor and you would still have a 7ft ceiling. We have seen the future and it is cramped.

By TJPaladin at 4:37 PM ON 03/18/09

Hasn't this guy heard of a Camper ? The question was answered by the real world consumers many years ago. Would someone please take him to the local RV Show.

By brie987 at 4:49 PM ON 03/18/09

This would be great if the guard that brings your meals is frequently on time. More cushions please.

By Thestranger at 5:16 PM ON 03/18/09

Once again, there is no thought spared to those above six foot two hundred pounds. Not only do I have stress my back just to get in my car of the future, but my hamster cage of the future as well

While it may not be the greatest in terms of permanent living for most Westerners, I think this kind of thing is a great idea for various uses, such as temporary housing following a disaster and/or during war, housing for the homeless and homeless refugees and for people who don't have a need for a huge house.

Now if it had more color, or rather was darker (black, crimson and greys) and di'nt look like a giant dumpster on the outside it'd definately be something I'd consider.

By namelessme at 7:55 PM ON 03/18/09

The hammock looks uncomfortable. Replace it with an elevated tempur pedic and you've got a deal. Which reminds me, this would be awesome for space exploration. You could conceivably fit about 200 of these inside a geodesic dome similar to the science station in antarctica, with the exception of it being totally self sustaining. I otherwise like the space-age feel of the all white design. It would go great with my Imac.

Mycroft must be psychic, or else it lives in Al Gore's colon, waiting, listening.
Japanese house too small, fine for Japan, even older Japanese people, but newer generations are bigger people. No solution to real problems: modern materials are poisonous like the FEMA trailers, no substitute for real living.

echoing dave t...
(3 meters)^3 ≈ (9.84251969 feet)^3
examining the square footage...
(9.84251969 feet)^2 ≈ 96.8751938 ft^2

By BSG62 at 5:48 AM ON 03/19/09

no way, that is small even by japanese living standards lol. How long would you have to live there before parole?

By Jack in the box at 6:58 AM ON 03/19/09

Looks like someone forgot to try and "think outside the box." Don't they use something like this, even smaller, at Guantanamo? For enhanced sensory deprivation? This concept is truly awful.

By Made in Japan at 9:06 PM ON 03/19/09

As a whole abruptly, but how such thing in the plane to transport?
It seems to me it is a little bit left unfinished variant...

By greypilgrim at 12:33 AM ON 03/21/09

The new standard for "modular home" I guess?
As to "Made In Japan"'s question concerning transport: perhaps its to be offloaded from an AirForce Galaxy transport (or somesuch) via parachute! (?)
And what about the inevitable attached garage option? Unless that's just a pair of hooks on the outside to hang your bicycle? That would fit in with the observed minimalist theme... but I would hate to think what their redesign of the bike would look like!

By Sgt. C. Foxtrot at 3:31 AM ON 03/23/09

I like it!

By zhubaba at 2:36 PM ON 03/23/09

If the Japanese are designing smaller homes, our RV manufacturers in Elkhart county Indiana could make them and ship them to Nippon. Create some jobs.

By MikeT6078 at 12:13 AM ON 03/26/09

Our nation would have a suicide problem too if this was their idea of a cool house

By denicorn at 3:26 AM ON 03/26/09

Look , if we could feel good living in such a mall box , but alas at least us fat (340)lbs) ep thats me just cant do that I hae an alternative , look at this web page and see what can be done with Housing and Nature...

Hey the Homeless problem is now solved; Just air drop these puppies on the cities; first come first served.

By Laenerin at 5:00 PM ON 03/26/09

@ greypilgrim: The minimalist bike is the unicycle.

I think it's a decent idea for a college dorm or some such, but not a house for a family. I also think there should be some small kitchenette to make meals...at least a microwave. Also, maybe a solar panel on top to provide a clean energy source.

By casacooper at 3:03 PM ON 03/30/09

Haven't you seen the mini hotels? They are like little coffins!
Still, instead of being so critical, consider the fact that most Japanese are smaller than Westerners. Also, because of the incredibly crowded conditions caused by the need for arable land vs. habitable land vs. volcanos, there is a concept of inner space that older Japanese people learned at a very young age. This generation doesn't seem to have that concept, due to the homogenizing effects of television first and internet now.

While that box wouldn't be my first choice, I could manage; I suspect the boxes could be joined at some point. I can also see where these would be very useful for Katrina victims, homeless housing, tornado victims… I think that Laernerin has a good idea in the microwave and I'd add multiple solar panels for AC or heat, computer, etc.
