Cloud Umbrella keeps your head in the sky while you stay dry

cldumb98702.jpgFar less practical than the neon tube umbrellas of Blade Runner, but just as futuristic, the Cloud Umbrella is a concept design straight from a sci-fi megalopolis. Created by Dutch designer Joonsoo Kim, the Cloud Umbrella is carried around in stick form, and then inflated into mini-cumulus clouds of protection when the rain starts to pour. No word on price, or if this will ever see the light of day, but one can only hope.

Wouldn't the water just run around the balls and get you wet. Doesn't seem to be a well thought out design to me.

By Ozzmeister00 at 4:55 PM ON 03/09/09

Agreed. What's more, if you're caught in a sudden downpour you'll need to take the time to inflate the bloody thing, whereas with more traditional umbrellas you'd be able to just pop it open.

the article clearly states "far less practical," which tells me its near to zilch practicality. this was obviously more of a fashion statement to me. in fact, the only time i would use this is it were light rain or light snow where pulling this cutie out would be a wonderful sight!

Errrr... I dunno but it doesn't seem to be helpful on heavy rainy days. And besides, if the rain starts to pour you're already soaking wet pumping it to open up. =S

I like it....I agree with everyone else though....maybe if it was larger (width) so it would only run and drip down around you not ON you. I would pro'y buy it because it's truly unique

By GBVBERRY at 8:07 AM ON 03/11/09

Yep, I agree with everyone else...besides looking cool this thing is a horrid idea. Take a bucket hold a ball over the bucket... now pour water on the ball.... look at that... water in the bucket.

i agree with everyone, but it still a cool idea, it just needs improvements. its has potential with its easy to carry design.

i find it fairly amusing that people are criticising the practicality of this when it is clearly a beautiful realisation of a moment of creative clarity and imaginative vision... did you think of it? did you make me smile? no, you were too consumed in your own benal negativity. Bravo joonsoo kim, it is wonderful :) stephen
