Caught on tape: Would you take an iPod or a Zune first?

Recently, a couple of Target employees stole a bunch of digital music players from the store where they worked. By a ratio of five to one, they preferred iPods over "similar Microsoft devices."

Is that being a bit harsh on the Zune? After all, we thought it was a decent challenger to the iPod when it first debuted. To get our answer, we turned to the public (well, as public as our office kitchen gets). First we laid out a new iPod nano and a Microsoft Zune — each with virtually the same shape, capacity and color — on the counter. Then we set up a hidden camera, got out of the way, and watched for which player each person grabbed for first.

The final tally? The video tells all. And, yeah, that one guy is on notice.

So thieves prefer Apple products?

By nick at 2:25 PM ON 03/12/09

I think this test may be a little inaccurate by the fact that people don't recognize the Zune. It's not a popularity contest as much as it is a test of recognition. No one picks up the iPod that they have seen a thousand times and more than likely own. They think, 'what's this next to the iPod?' and go for the Zune to investigate.

By KBeat at 2:39 PM ON 03/12/09

I'm with you on that Nick. I've got about a half dozen iPods in various generations and varieties at my house. If I saw a Zune and iPod lying side by side I'd pick up the Zune out of curiosity having rarely seen one.

By Slantsixx at 2:50 PM ON 03/12/09

Umm, yeah... That's about as accurate as accurate as rolling dice to predict tomorrow's weather. If I saw an iPod and a Zune, I'd pick up the Zune and be all "what's this brown piece of sh**?"

By dragon at 3:07 PM ON 03/12/09

personally i explain when selling music players that the only benefit to buying an ipod over something else is the accessories you can get the ipod is more expensive and while the sound is better you need perfect hearing and good headphones to tell. but still people buy the ipod because its the fashion accessory there kids/family member want. to put it bluntly the sheep mostly follow where the farmer leads

By okham at 4:13 PM ON 03/12/09

Right. Because Microsoft isn't a gigantic corporation that everyone recognizes. That's why Apple leads in computer sales and Microsoft is a step below Linux. Bah...

By Dman at 5:24 PM ON 03/12/09

Uh, Okham, Microsoft doesnt sell computers... so how does that make sense? They sell software and the Zune - hardly a computer I might add.

By Sven at 7:26 PM ON 03/12/09

Maybe it's that 25 iPods = 4 zunes !

By Chronosis at 7:49 PM ON 03/12/09

I probably would have checked both out. The Zune first. Just because I never see one up close that often.

By circlehead28 at 9:37 PM ON 03/12/09

first...how do we know if they just didn't add the other footage that showed Zunes getting picked up more?

second...If you notice the iPod is almost alwasy in front of the zune...so if someone sees something lieing there...they're more likely to pick the one closest to them..

third...Someone's not going to screw around with a device that they've never used before, instead they're going to look at the songs in the most knowable device

There's my conclusion

By SpookyG at 3:52 AM ON 03/13/09

Generally, right handed people preferred the device on the right side, the left handed preferred the left side. Nice experiment tough...

By RG at 9:46 AM ON 03/13/09

Morale of the story:
If you're going to by one of these devices, buy the zune because it's less likely to get stolen.

By Anonymous at 11:06 AM ON 03/13/09

If they were going to steal anyway, why didn't they just take both?

By bzkoss236 at 1:26 PM ON 03/13/09

I think what is actually going on is that they initially pick up the ipods because ipods are highly publicized and other related products, such as products from Microsoft or Creative Media, are not. Especially so on media resources such as television which a very high majority of people watch at one time or another.

By gunnerrob1 at 1:38 PM ON 03/13/09

You know your product is bad when even a thief won't take it.

By Anonymous at 4:35 PM ON 03/13/09

Not to get all conspiracy theorist, but I always take DVICE's clear preferences for MSFT products (and occasional inane rants against Apple - http://dvice.com/archives/2008/09/why_the_ipod_na.php or http://dvice.com/archives/2009/03/apple_reveals_n.php) with a grain of salt.

DVICE is part of Sci Fi, which is owned by NBC which has strategically aligned itself with Microsoft on a number of occasions (MSNBC anyone?).

I'm just surprised a Scheinhardt Wig Company FunCooker wasn't left lying around as Option C.

By AlexFury at 7:39 PM ON 03/13/09

Hell, if I were to see both, I'd skip both.. give me the Creative Zen (Creative, the people to make Sound Blaster). Better than both the Zune and iPod put together.

As for this example up there. I have to agree. The bias is a bit towards the iPod, because people know what it is, and likely know how to use it. The people who picked up the Zune were going 'wtf' is this thing?

By Mihos at 9:32 PM ON 03/13/09

I like the Zune better... I have the Zune and my wife has the touch. She likes my Zune better too.

By bradey at 1:12 AM ON 03/14/09

zune rocks.

By alanyvr at 1:46 AM ON 03/14/09

This proves it! - - ipod is the choice of people with thieving tendencies!

By lame at 10:53 AM ON 03/14/09

This is the lamest video I saw here. This is not Zune Vs Ipod but more a bunch of people who just touch an electronic device without any goal... tss

By Twitch at 4:57 PM ON 03/14/09

I don't know why anyone would want an ipod when the zune has way more functionality. I have had both and ended up dumping the ipod because the zune was just better. In the office I work at the number of zune owners out ranks the ipod owners 3 to 1.

By jon at 11:52 AM ON 03/15/09

I have the Creative Zen Vision W and their other smaller MUVO players - costs less and works as good or better than the other two brands...

By Flipper at 4:10 PM ON 03/15/09

I guess Twitch works in Redmond. LOL

By dave at 6:08 PM ON 03/15/09

I think everyone picks up the zune because nobody has ever seen one and even my mother has 3 ipods.

By K'Rik at 9:55 AM ON 03/16/09

I work in a media technology department and had a chance to experiment with both. I prefer the Zune. I don't like my files being converted to MP4 that only itunes can read.

ipods are for the sheep in our society.

By Bray at 2:34 PM ON 03/16/09

Two thieves are not going to steal based on statistical popularity; they'll take what's there. The Target probably stocked six iPod Classics, six Shuffles, seven Nanos, and four Zunes...
...and the thieves took them all.

By Parkour86 at 5:09 PM ON 03/17/09

Since people like to steal the Ipod's over Zune's i'm getting me a Zune.

By DellG at 2:41 AM ON 03/19/09

K'RIK what are you talking about? iTunes and iPods play MP3s, you don't have to convert to MP4 unless you want to.

Zunes are a classless bricks. I won a free one and sold it to get a iPod touch.

By Feisty at 1:34 PM ON 03/19/09

How about putting it next to something worthy like a Zen or an Archos?

By vladdybear at 6:44 PM ON 03/19/09

People picked up Zune cuz they had no idea who would make an iPod Knock-off LOL

By FiaraFairy at 6:45 PM ON 03/19/09

hmm... interesting video... zunes are supposed to be somewhat better than ipods for some strange reason... some of the guys that i know at church are more into the zune than ipod :/ oh well, ipods ARE more popular.

By Cjsfriend at 12:09 AM ON 03/20/09

Many people have never even touched a Zune, Even thought it may be better the people who haven't used one will pick the Ipod first, But after a closer comparison of the features, a their decision may be swayed.

By cudenbu at 3:32 AM ON 03/20/09

We all know the Zune is the ultimate ipod anti-theft device http://hideapod.com/

By jj at 12:05 AM ON 03/21/09

People who picked up the Zune first probably don't know what it is and are curious to know. They already know what an ipod lokks like. For those that picked up the ipod first, probably yhey already know how to operate it and want to know who owns it and what nasty stuff it contains. ;)

By chuck at 5:29 PM ON 03/21/09

every body is curious cuz they dont reconnize the zune come on every body reconizes an ipod

By PJ at 5:25 AM ON 03/22/09

My verdict? People are nosy as hell!

By hannah at 12:46 AM ON 03/26/09

I love my zune,my older one still works perfectly and i bought the newest one too. (i thought i had lost my older one) I love them both.

By taynna at 8:27 AM ON 03/26/09

you people need hobbies - or more work to do - if you think this was a good way to spend your time

By wyrmmage at 5:18 PM ON 03/29/09

lol, that's because no one even knows what a zune is, so they're curious. Why not go look at sales data if you're really curious about whether people prefer Zunes or iPods? :\

By mobilephone3 at 2:54 AM ON 04/01/09

I will choose ipod , I like this brand very much , it is really very nice !

By heroinben at 11:14 PM ON 04/05/09

yes you go ahead and take the Ipod... is that all people care about these days is name brands and price tags? if so you people have really lost touch with what really matters and that people would be the ability of what any of these highly advanced piece's of equipment can do, yes some do more than others, but what really matters is what do you the consumer want it to do, secondly what do you need it to do. that's what matters not the so called name brand. Just remember sometime you get what you pay for and sometimes you pay for the label ("name brand")

By tyler at 12:16 PM ON 04/06/09

Ipods are better

By Paul at 11:11 AM ON 04/09/09

Ive worked in Retail for 10 years and in store operations management for the past 3. We had Ipods and Zunes side by side in a case in our cash office directly on camera. When given the option, a theif will steal a cheaper Ipod over a Zune. Id find nanos and shuffles go missing before an 80 gb zune. Its the way these people work...

By Doh! at 9:15 PM ON 04/11/09

Am I missing something?
I don't see the video on the page.

By Me at 2:49 AM ON 04/12/09

What the hell! Nobody is being jewish! I would take both :-D

By poopstar at 10:02 PM ON 04/17/09

Nerds

By Mike at 10:31 AM ON 04/18/09

cute - I guess I'd take them both - to the receptionist, because I'd figure some bozo lost them while getting coffee. Just last week, I had to return somebody's car keys. Eventually, they would have figured it out, but people are getting so lame, they'll leave just about anything if it isn't attached to them. Back to sewing gloves to their jackets I guess...

By Steve Jobs at 9:01 PM ON 06/02/09

Maybe they both suck, Neither can hold much and both have a really small screen, maybe that's why no one kept either one.

By Alyson at 2:50 PM ON 06/17/09

Hey, people,
It's more of a publicity contest...
FOr example, if you had seen pods all your life or almost ;) all your life, which one would you go for?
I would say, "Hey, what's this little thin near the ipod?" PLUS, you've got to realize people may have picked them to see who they belonged to
Yeah, the apple one a contest, but it's not necessarily popularity, probably publicity or returning it to the owner

By natalie at 4:23 AM ON 07/09/09

iPod first.
