The Segway still hasn't changed the way humans move, although they're rather cool to watch. Is it the wheels that keep skeptics away? If so, students from the University of Louisiana might have designed a winner.
The Cajun Crawler uses multiple legs instead of wheels. It's surprisingly graceful, and much faster than you would imagine. It's based on Dutch designer Theo Jansen's beach creatures. The Cajun Crawler uses the same Dynamic Stabilization used in the Segway, but the multiple feet give it a more stable platform. If it were available for purchase, which would you choose — Segway or Cajun Crawler?

Damn. That's pretty cool. Though, anyone else remember the days when you walked places?

now just throw a height variable detector on there and you're set.

Pit that against a Segway and make both cross a muddy field. Segway wins.
Actually, forget the Segway. Rubber boots and real legs work well too.

That's some really original music they've got there.

Dang, just do it in brass, copper and black iron and you have a Steampunk Segway! I want one just for that reason!

OMG!
Got my Segway driver's badge in Lille, France, and now really need one of these for 30 mins please.
Wonder if they'll do a stair climber?
And PNG I definitely agree, we all need a steampunk version too.

I think these "legs" take much more power than two wheels.
By Yogurt at 6:03 PM ON 03/17/09
It sounds logical to believe that legs take more power than two wheels but isn't the segway powered by a large automotive battery? The cajun looked to be powered by two 18 volt cordless drill batteries.
Forgive me if I'm off but wouldn't that mean the segway requires more power?
There is lots of potential here with the cajun. You could make a comfortable sit down version of it like they attempted in the video. You could add more legs with a wider base for those who happen to be heavier. Someone mentioned a height variable detector, great idea.
You wouldn't want to stick your seqway in a muddy field nor would you want to do it with the cajun. Neither device wins but that guy wins with the world's greatest lack of common sense.
I do wonder how long two 18 volt batteries last while powering the cajun.
