Windows Mobile 6.5 cell phone OS unveiled

windows-mobile-65-04.pngWell it's about time fuddy-duddy Microsoft hopped up with the hepcats and finally redesigned that stodgy Windows Mobile interface. And what a bang-up job the Redmondians have done with this version 6.5 of its cell phone operating system. It's not quite new-feature-packed enough to be called 7.0, but an earnest effort nonetheless. Look for it to find its way into cell phones sometime in the second half of this year.

We like that honeycomb layout and the Zune-like atmosphere. Also appealing are the one-handed interface, no-waiting voice mail, the cloud-syncing MyPhone online service, and a new app store. Sound familiar? Let's just hope the writers of the upcoming collection of Windows Mobile cell phone apps are infected with the same enthusiasm as those aligned with Cupertino.

yuck.

The layout seems haphazard. The icons on that second screen are as clear as mud. Why is start in the upper left when the OS has always kept it in the lower left?

The Android phones have a substantially better interface ... and that is saying something.

Hexes? Why?

Wow- a Microsoft OS that's ugly and difficult to navigate? You're kidding...

@CROSSWIRED; Actually to my recollection, the mobile version of the OS has always had the start menu at the top. At least, thats what I have gathered from my friends who own a WinMobile OS phone. Thats nothing new, and hardly something complaint-worthy.

As for the interface, okay, thats your opinion. I personally think its a vast improvement! I can already see how I'd align my icons.
Column 1: Recent Calls, Phone Book, Messages, Etc
Column 2: Browser, Games, MP3's and Videos
Column 3: Phone Settings, and Misc Applications

It would be especially handy if it had a scroll option, which, from the looks of it, it does.

Im honestly surprised at these two comments above. I think you're just Windows haters.

While I myself dont own a WMOS phone or an iPhone, I think that this is a good step for Microsoft.

Though yes, the icons could be better designed.

Not a windows hater - just calling it like I see it. This interface is sub-standard and deficient compared to the competition. Palm does it better. Android does it better. Apple does it better.

I have a tilt with 6.0 or 6.1, I can't remember at the moment. I wish Microsoft would just make a welcome screen designed to be pretty, or designed to be productive. It seems like they keep trying to do both and screw it up badly.

I bought this phone because of windows it's phone capabilities, not because it looked good or had "apps". Remote desktop, ftp, wireless router emulation, etc. Build it for that, that's what the people who buy phones with windows mobile on it want.

Hilarious fanboy comments.

It is amazing how you guys judge an OS by two screenshots, that is phenomenal.

idiots

I'm not a smart phone owner but I do know stuff for only being 18, and just by looking at this it to me it holds a pretty and easy finger friendly design to it and then on top of that Windows haasn't released it yet and knowing windows there going to try and fix evey flaw they see

but to me i love it!!!!!!

I quite like the redisigned homescreen, its clean and only shows you what you need to know about your phone. And as for the hexagon lineup, quirkey though it may be, would allow you to access any part of the phone with about two touches. And the hexagons are probably just a skin, you should easily be able to switch between differnt skins for different looks.

Also, if the interface is too taxing for the phone to handle, on Windows Mobile devices it is more than easy to do a registry hack and alloticate more memory to the phone's graphics and improve the performence of the whole device.

And to add to the current argument going on, I am a sucker for WinMo phones, I love the fact that I can write essays and work on my other writings on my blackjack 2 along with bluetoothing files between my phone and my computer.
