OLED Wallpaper: Who needs a window?

Light-Emitting Wallpaper1-218-85.jpgToshiba is working on an ultra-thin OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) display that could be used to wallpaper your home, turning any wall into a huge TV.

From Toshiba:

"The wallpaper uses light that has been redirected by an ultra-fine grating that is fabricated by self-assembled nano particles." Also according to Toshiba, it's several years from commercial production.
Damn — I want it now. Lenses will amplify the light, and brightness levels close to more traditional TVs will be possible with nanotechnology. Entire rooms could be covered with a floor-to-ceiling glow. Instead of picking a permanent color palette for a room, set one for your mood at the moment. Don't paint a static mural in your kid's room, just install this and keep moving murals playing all day long. Keep a sunny day in your kitchen, all winter long. Or just use it as the world's biggest badass TV. That works for me.

Seems like the beginnings of a primitive holodeck.

I can look forward to pulling out the remote and clicking on a wall like in Total Recall to change the outdoor scenery and watch a high def Watchmen with friends...in a few years.

it's something i've been telling my parents the last 2 years and young architekts i work withe.

in fackt withe the new oled printable ink it should be possible....

maby a bit expensive but posible.

only thing so far i guessed was that you need some sort of conection and box to link the panels up and to create 1 big picture or several differant.

the fackt i like like about this is yes the "holodeck" experiance or the cube in "sunshine".

but i see the aplication also in bringing "natural" lighting into place without having wal / cyling mounted fixtures.

thus giving a more natual feeling , and maby a creepy one where you dont realy notice where the light is coming from.

it wil save energie , in making / changing papers or painting / lighting.

but if we make every wall in every room an "oled wall" then i gues we would consume the same or even more energie.

therfore i see more aplications on :
- cylings
- under cabinets
- in cabinets
- on the back of doors
etc.

not counting the grapical things you could do withe it.... becouse that would be endles...

but i find it funny that everybody thinks of the "holo deck"

where i see better more realistic comparison , that then was made up to be "silly" but now can come treu.

yes i'm a "back to the future" fan.
and if you are 2 you can remember those nice roolup blinds that boasted "the scenery chanel bringing you views 24h a day"

then it was silly , but strange that withing my liftime such a thing could be realety....

but i gues i should not be that surprised as when i am old i hope to tel my grand children i saw so many things change ;-)

I think a fair portion of the population would probably start vomiting from motion sickness.

it reminds me of the short story "The Veldt" by ray Bradbury. Very creepy stuff
