TeleNav rolls out first full-featured GPS navigation software for Android

telenav_android_front.pngTeleNav just jumped into the Android arena this morning, announcing the first GPS navigation service for the open-source cell phone operating system started by Google. TeleNav GPS Navigator will have all those handy features of stand-alone and in-dash GPS units, such as turn-by-turn directions, speech recognition, traffic alerts and 10 million points of interest.

Starting February 24th, the software will be available for download from TeleNav's site for a month-long free trial — after that, it'll cost you $9.99 a month to use the service. With the T-Mobile G1 Android phone (pictured above) available now and a whole lot more Android-running phones on the way, this is going to be big.

Way to go, TeleNav, embarrassing iPhone again. Will Apple's cell phone be the only one in the world without turn-by-turn GPS navigation, the hottest app for cell phones today? Sure, there's a jailbroken hack GPS package for the iPhone, but we're not counting that. With GPS monster Garmin about to unleash two Garmin-Asus nuviphones with full-blown GPS nav, and now this nice-looking app from another major GPS developer, makes you wonder if the iPhone really is all that advanced.

Too bad this won't work worth a damn. My G1 never picks up a GPS signal worth anything...
