Gaping Hole costume, sure winner for Halloween 2009

gapinghole.pngAt last, technology has evolved enough to accommodate our dream costume. Evan Booth built this Gaping Hole sweatshirt in late 2006, using a portable DVD player's LCD in front, connected to the camera in back by shoulder straps.

Brilliant! Now that video cameras are smaller, cheaper and higher quality, and screens are flatter and have longer battery life, imagine what you could do next Halloween with an all-HD setup. You have eight months.

Holy Chest Burster Batman!!
This is very, very cool!
Kudos!

By LostMK at 7:08 PM ON 02/24/09

The idea is as old as old can be... camera + screen + once "solid" object = stealth technology, but using it this way is genius:P

By bostonCDI at 7:26 PM ON 02/24/09

wicked smart!

By Gary at 7:29 PM ON 02/24/09

That is an epic Halloween party, dude.

I wonder if he was scared to take it out in public for fear it would break haha.

By Lori Cappozzi at 9:34 PM ON 02/24/09

wow, that's really awesome, the dream stuff for halloween

By Dave T at 12:13 PM ON 02/25/09

Awesome...might be doable with a tablet PC (or UMPC) and a webcam too.

By dank BALLS at 2:06 PM ON 02/25/09

this method looks like poop. will find yourself being asked why you have taped an LCD to your person.

By philup at 2:41 PM ON 02/25/09

photoshopped.........

By midithekid at 3:43 PM ON 02/25/09

I call BS. I don't see how the LCD is getting power. I've worked with a lot of LCD's before and they require a lot of power. Also what camera/lcd combo do you know that work together live automatically? You need software to make the camera run like a webcam, and that software is on neither of those components. No wonder there's no video of this in action... it doesn't work.

By philup_is_a_peni at 3:56 PM ON 02/25/09

Philup & MIDITHEKID, you are both penis brains. This is not shopped. You nugget brain. If you cannot tell the difference between fake and real, DONT BOTHER COMMENTING!

penis brains...... wow..... really?

anyways, mastermind of an idea man

By AmNot at 11:38 PM ON 02/25/09

Is so a BFF. That's Big F**kin' Fake to the simple-minded.
Think about it you unworldly butt-wipes.

By Someone at 2:51 AM ON 02/26/09

Real or not, I still want one. I could have a lot of fun with that...
Also, lets at least try to be mature. I mean really.

By Kevin at 4:20 AM ON 02/26/09

on camera working with the screen, simple, has to be a camera with video out, comes with a cable to view on a TV. It's not photoshopped, it doesn't look "that good" it's too bright, and there's no evidence of the image actually lining up with the background. You can even see the black edge of the screen through the hole in the shirt. It would be obvious that it wasn't really a hole seen live, since the screen glows, and when the viewer moves the image doesn't.

Still it is a cool idea, and would get lots of attention, and could win costume contests.

By xQUINTESSENCEx at 5:04 AM ON 02/26/09

Pretty simple design... I'm at work atm and could step next door(stock cupboard) and make it in about an hour tops...

By chaostheory6682 at 5:53 AM ON 02/26/09

midithekid, I guess all of those laptop computers with lcd screens on the market are just figments of out imaginations. oooh ee oooh!!!
And it can easily be done, I bought a small and cheap surveillance camera that streams a signal directly to a tv using a small receiver, no wires and no software. So ya, it can be done pretty easy. although you would probably only get a couple hours topps, depending on the type of battery/ batteries you were using.

By ChronicLulz at 10:35 AM ON 02/26/09

That hair has to win the contest.

By savdavid at 10:56 AM ON 02/26/09

The colors don't match and you have to view it from the same angle the camera is pointing. Unconvincing.

By BigEddie at 12:02 PM ON 02/26/09

Why not get two tiny cameras, put one on the tip of each shoe, and walk near women with wide skirts???

By JaCobian91 at 12:39 PM ON 02/26/09

@MIDITHEKID
Somfware isn't needed for that. I have a camera from a couple years ago with AV out. As long as the LCD has AV in, which even the really cheap ones do, then it'll work. Also, you can see the power source in the picture below the demonstration picture.

@AMNOT

For the simple minded? You can't make something up on the spot and expect everyone to know what it is. YBFAF.

By Kurrus at 7:33 PM ON 02/26/09

This is obviously 'shooped. I can tell from the pixels and because I've seen quite a few 'shoops in my life.

By BenH at 7:51 PM ON 02/26/09

kurrus, thats lame and old. quit sounding like an old man trying to be cool and hip will ya? the 'shopped troll trend already died long time ago.

By hi at 10:25 PM ON 02/26/09

wouldn't a mirror have a similar effect?

By Netana at 6:13 AM ON 02/27/09

if the whole world went with the idea that an idea seems impossible nobody would have invented anything and we'd still be living in caves

By maissi at 2:31 PM ON 02/27/09

u know this is a old invention.... camo suits for the military using the same principals have been made, well prototypes. not with so good results, but this has been done many years ago. but to come up with an idea like this, re-invetning the military camo or how u like to put it, is pretty great. i like this :)

By Martha at 2:47 PM ON 02/27/09

Lovely just lovely

By Rocket at 3:56 PM ON 02/27/09

...............Is it bad that the first thing I thought of was, "OMG, so that's how you could do an Espada costume from Bleach!" <_<0 I'm not a fangirl for that series, but I always wondered how one could pull off that effect.

By joker at 8:57 PM ON 02/27/09

this is stupid.

By Murgator at 1:42 AM ON 02/28/09

The 'hole' is photo shopped. Look at the wall he is standing in front of. Look at the hallway. There should be some sort of 'purple wall meets hallway' edge in the picture, not a white corner of a door...

By bluezer at 9:38 AM ON 02/28/09

Man, y'all are missing it. I'm not saying it can't be photoshopped, but why. Do you think maybe the camera is zoomed in a little too close to make the effect perfect? You probably need someone to make your setting for you; or a couple people.

By ecs_1 at 4:16 PM ON 02/28/09

To Murgator, Your assumptions of Photo trickery can be easily dismissed by virtue of your failure to take into consideration that if the angle of Weird Black Haired Wig bearing person being NOT Perfectly perpendicular to the Photographers camera, The view from the rearward looking cameras will not be perfectly aligned to the backdrop. And difference in Illumination levels showing on the LCD is further evidence of authenticity; As No-one would bother to alter luminance levels on the Thru-View. If every detail was perfectly aligned, and luminance levels were precise, it would lend credence to your accusations of chicanery. Take some solace in the fact someone has enough spare time and resources to think it up in the first place, and stop trying to be the authoritative voice in what may or may not be real. Especially considering your obviously limited mentality and non-existent imagination are to profusely spread throughout your comments!

By PaganPup at 4:45 PM ON 02/28/09

If you look closely at the right side of the "hole" and the fabric just next to it, you'll see a discolored section of fabric that is the purple wall. (actually, I think it's brown)

By Pikathulhu at 1:16 AM ON 03/01/09

Dear Hi At.....
Really?
REALLY?
Think about what you just said.

By lawyerdude666 at 8:33 AM ON 03/02/09

Hey, Murgator, open your eyes, you nitwit. The image on the screen is one of the raised panels on the door itself. The camera is set with a slight zoom, which is why it appears bigger. Also, the door frame is not directly behind the guy. If you knew anything about how perspective angles work, you'd be able to see that the camera is focused exactly where it should be and is showing exactly what it should.

By Dialer at 4:04 PM ON 03/03/09

Its a damn Halloween costume already. You geeks need to lay of the hentai and get outside and get some air.

I wish any comments with the term "shopped" wer automatically throw away. Great costume! and check this: DIY Instructions: http://www.instructables.com/id/Death_Becomes_Her_Halloween_Costume/

By p2 at 6:47 PM ON 03/05/09

Imagine when bendable OLED screens are cheap.. then you could have a screen under your shirt that's barely noticeable! And you're very close-minded or a luddite if you think this was photoshopped... It's a very simple idea..
Why in the world would you need software to make a camera's picture show up on a screen live? This feat has been achieved before computers were invented...
And no, a mirror would not achieve the same effect. A mirror reflects the image infront of the mirror. This costume is trying to let your SEE THROUGH the body, and not your reflection. Stupid, stupid...

By Liza at 1:38 PM ON 03/07/09

haha nice one mate!

By AXSD at 8:47 PM ON 03/07/09

Cool idea, but you still can't pass your arm through yet.

By megantoy at 3:04 AM ON 03/08/09

waaaaay too cool!

By David Davidson at 1:29 AM ON 03/09/09

Cool costume! That wig is wicked sweet bro! How'd you make it?

By marki_marku at 3:15 AM ON 03/09/09

what a negative bunch of commentators. Get real it is a Halloween costume for crying out loud. so much better than a sheet with two holes for eyes. infinitely better than a "Scream Mask" Miles better than the stupid Ice Hockey mask. This is fantastic, original and fun. I'll bet e had every guy in the place wanting to check it out and every girl thinking how wonderful he was for putting so much effort into his costume.
all I can say is WELL DONE! it's BLOODY FANTASTIC

By heh cool at 1:45 PM ON 03/09/09

that looks cool, tho i wish all the 1337 geeks would stop tryin to prove everything as fake.
i achived a similar effect all you need is a willing friend and a shot gun.

By Steve Jobs at 10:54 PM ON 03/09/09

Of course it's not convincing, you already know it's fake and how it's done. But walking down the street on Halloween, you can bet you'll be getting quite a few second and third looks.

By Oi at 1:34 PM ON 03/10/09

To: HI
You would need more then a mirror, you would need many mirrors. One single mirror and the observer would just be looking at him/herself.

TO: Pikathulhu
No need to be blatantly mean. This effect could technially be produced using mirrors. However it would be fairly hard to do. You would have to create a device similar to a periscope which would start in the front of the costume, wrap around the side, and end in the back of the costume. Needless to say, this would be hard to hide under a sweatshirt and therefore is not a good way to go about creating an effect similar to the one we see here.

To: marki_marku
I agree, the majority of these people seem to be out right jealous.

To: The Creator Of The Costume
Wicked idea and it looks great for the technology used. Very innovative.

-Oi

By Izabael at 12:31 AM ON 03/11/09

yeah but from BEHIND it just looks like a camera...

If it actually looked convincing they should have a video of it.

By Borellus at 9:08 AM ON 03/16/09

Nice, I might "steal" this idea.

By Gregory at 10:20 AM ON 03/23/09

Lol, nice idea. I will do this at home.

By Dana at 9:07 AM ON 03/27/09

AXSD: Brilliant!

By Fony Bolony at 11:54 AM ON 04/29/09

By Meself at 12:40 AM ON 05/09/09

Pure class, how could ya drink wit that thing on tho, one spilled beer and --- bzzzt!!

By Digital Dojo at 9:58 PM ON 05/18/09

wow! this is really nice. awesome post man! love it. i'll try and goof around with this :)

By tiffanys at 5:13 AM ON 06/24/09

wowo its just like a magic

By Rob at 10:24 AM ON 07/02/09

Pretty cool idea, but there could be some faults in it, depending on the angle of the person viewing the gaping hole. For a tall person, looking down at the hole, the view should be that of guts, etc.

By Online Marketing Consultant at 4:39 PM ON 08/26/09

That's a great idea for an Adult Halloween Costumes. You are very creative!!!!

By Jessica25 at 12:00 AM ON 12/18/09

Some persons recognize that that’s more simple to purchase the best dissertation or dissertation writing close to this good topic, than to finish by own efforts.
