Bandai brings netbook trend to Japanese toddlers

bandntbk89723.jpgThe growing trend towards netbooks has invaded the realm of Japanese children with the introduction of Bandai's new Gachapin & Mukku Netbooks. Gachapin and Mukku are cutesy characters on Japanese television, but the hardware sporting their iconic faces is hardly kid stuff.

Inside the netbooks you'll find a 120 gigabyte harddrive, 1 gigabyte of RAM, WiFi, a webcam, and a 1Seg television tuner. While that might seem like an overly powerful plaything for a toddler, the price of 79,800 yen ($878) will sober up any parents thinking this is a toy purchase. The Gachapin & Mukku Netbooks will go on sale in March here.

I don't know about Japanese color perception, but to my eyes, that color scheme is obnoxious. Give them a real computer if you really want to teach kids about them, and especially with that price tag.
