Palm Pre, the small, rounded and innovative smartphone

palm_pre.jpg

Despite the widespread assumption that PDA grandaddy Palm was in its death throes, the company rolled out an iPhone competitor, the Palm Pre, at CES yesterday. The 8-gigabyte slider has GPS navigation, Wi-Fi connectivity, and a new interface the company's calling WebOS. Looking good! This could be the beginning of a big comeback for Palm.

In about six months, the Palm Pre will be available exclusively on the Sprint network, and while pricing hasn't been announced yet, the phone is said to cost roughly in the $200 range. Now if Palm can just get an army of developers interested in creating web-friendly apps for the diminutive smartphone, it might have a shot at being competitive.

I'm a pretty loyal Windows Mobile user, however what I've seen so far is very impressive and may entice me to switch. We've even started a community over at http://www.SprintPre.net to chat about it.

It seems to me that poor marketing has led Palm to be where it is at now. Palm's Treo had many of the features the iPhone had, way before the iPhone was released, but no one knew about it. Of course, an upgrade to the OS and device in general was much needed. Finally they release it.

But I'm thinking it's too little, too late. Palm used to be the leader in PDA's, but never gained any ground in the smartphone market. The misguided Foleo didn't help the company either. They had an army developers with thousands of applications. As it is, they've got a lot of catching up to do.

I'm an iPhone user. That said, this phone is simply amazing. I'm getting this one.

uhmm... I had several Treos and I don't know what features it shared with the iPhone. The Treo could not render Web sites correctly. It gave you this weird (mobile) version. It could not play music or videos very well, if at all. Palm has finally stepped up!
