Mitsubishi unveils next generation compact electric car

miev09034.jpgJapanese car maker Mitsubishi has announced their next all electric vehicle called the i MiEV SPORT AIR. Looking something like a cross between a Volkswagon and a bullet, the futuristic vehicle will run on a 63horsepower (46kilawatt) electric motor powered by 330-volt lithium ion batteries. Next to the Tesla, this could be the coolest electrical vehicle design we've seen yet. Scheduled to hit the streets in 2010, the i MiEV will have a driving range of 100 miles on just one seven hour charge from a common household electrical outlet.

Is a "volkswagon" something like a volkswagen?

so you drive 100 miles, you have to wait for 7 hours to go back

Electrical cars are impractical, the only place you can plug them in is at home and the recharge is usually a long process. You are saving a lot of money, and it isn't exactly a "green process" at least when you have a gas-run car, there's a station every mile or so instead of every homestead.

Electric cars are only impractical from the viewpoint that only 90%+ of the population would benefit from their usage. Most people in the US only drive 10 to 20 miles for work then come home for the day. While it's not built for coast to coast driving, it's definitely worthwhile to build and invest in.

I like the approach GM is going with the Volt, though I feel it needs a ton of tweaking. I'm sure if any of these electrics have potential, it's gonna be that one.

Still the same old problem with electric cars. Batteries!

The real question is, will it be BetterPlace compatible?

Anyone else think this looks a bit like a longer BMW Isetta.

Someone should start a community of shared electric charging just like we do with WIFI like the companies FON and WeFi.

Blame your government for not having charge stations, do not blame innovation for the governments shortcomings, which we all know are intentional.

What does the Miev Sport Air cost? The Tesla is like 100K.

By tiolawa at 12:33 AM ON 02/01/09

is it just me or does it look like a VW bug

Please!!! Please stop posting "namelessme". I have seen several of your posts and i'm sure there is a socialist blog out there that you will be a lot happier with. As for this vehicle it rocks!!! Many of us would love to test these units out. I can drive this vehicle for two weeks on one charge!!! If they can lower the price to $12K-$15K they wouldn't be able to close the doors in at the dealer stations!!! It has the potential we have been crying out for. Different design. No need to feed he pumps. Not too small. I love it!
