Intel drops Atom bomb on Classmate PC

intelclassmate_2.jpg

Intel's Classmate PC got a major face-lift with a convertible, dual-orientation tablet interface that switches automatically from portrait to landscape mode with a built-in accelerometer. As before, Intel is supplying local manufacturers with a reference design integrating their Atom processor.

Features include a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 512MB RAM, Wi-Fi, a webcam and a touchscreen. One of the nice features of the touchscreen is that it disregards hand input when the stylus is in use, allowing kids to rest their wrist on it as they would on paper. On the carrying handle a nametag slot has been cleverly embedded. The rugged, adorable, Windows XP machines will be available through certain school districts and the usual retail channels soon.
