How the RED One camera makes SCI FI's Sanctuary look good

The SCI FI Channel's Sanctuary is the first television series in North America to be shot entirely on the revolutionary RED One camera. The crew up in Vancouver, BC, were kind enough to show DVICE how the camera's insane resolution and tapeless recording system let them keep all their work in the digital domain — and at four times the resolution of HD.

Great video. Thank you for sharing.

It's great to see real world examples (and bigger budgets) centered around the RED. Thanks for the video!

Thank you, DVice. That was a very informative video. Also, you can see the cast rehearsing their arrival scene at Bhalasaam from Revelations, Part 2 in the background towards the end of the video clip.

"Bigger budgets"? I'd hardly call The Sanctuary a "big-budget" production. I think it's the poorest-produced mainstream show on TV right now. The computer graphics are cheap, almost everything is obviously shot on a green screen, the storyline is pitiful, and the acting weak. It's really surprising that Amanda Tapping would act in this (and surprising that she'd force an accent on herself for the entire series!), let alone produce it.

Why can't we see better shows like Lost, Battlestar Galactica, or Heroes?

By deadlyjim13 at 9:25 AM ON 01/13/09

@The Ramen Noodle : It obviously must be a bigger budget production, they are filming it on some of the most expensive cameras in the world, have a new flash drive for each FOUR MINUTES of film and have dedicated Mac Pro towers for each of the cameras. Thats not exactly what you'd call low cost, and I'm betting that equipment isn't out of the crew's pockets.

The RED camera is a great new tool to content providers around the world who don't have the budget of 35mm film productions. It gives you so much in terms of information, cost savings, and quality. It is basically greater quality than film in terms of information. I know there are a ton of film die hards out there who will disagree and I agree with most of them that film has a different look and feel, which we have grown up with. I just shot a couple of tv spots with the camera and we would not have been able to pull off the quality of the production value without using the RED.

By chipxsd at 11:16 AM ON 01/13/09

RED cameras aren't that expensive as you might think. Shooting on RED is actually cheaper than shooting on film.

Thanks for sharing this video! It's always nice to see behind the scenes...and some of the people who work so hard to create sucha great show!! Thanks again...

@ramennoodle,
i guess you have a pinner point about BSG (Battlestar Galatica) being a sick show. i've got definite love for BSG. But for real, Sanctuary is DOPE!! for real man, that show is just off the hook, from the premier episode i've been hooked on my lazy boy waiting for each new episode. it takes me back to the days of being stoked on neon rider. i mean the story is COMPLETELY compelling, i'm hooked. say what you will, but i think you should seriously consider watching another episode before you slander the writing. peace, big guns.

The diagram comparing the RED's resolution to HD in the image is a bit incorrect. RED shoots around five times the resolution, which is five times the area of HD (a bit more than two times the length and two times the width). The diagram makes it look more than four times the length and width - which is closer to SD.

By tailwhip at 7:16 AM ON 01/15/09

Thanks for posting. Almost twice the resolution can make for an excellent source for editing. Now we just need to get that tech to the consumer.

By moviedemon at 8:40 AM ON 01/15/09

@Tailwhip
That tech is coming to the consumer - soon. Check out the SCARLET from the makers of RED...

By CRE at 2:18 PM ON 01/15/09

Hey Ramen noodle, of course sanctuary looks like its shot mostly on green screen. They use digital sets. It looks like on purpose. Sanctuary is way better than that crap Battlestar Gallatica and Lost and Heroes!

By wazzat at 5:13 PM ON 01/15/09

Okay, good show. Personally can't get past the 2 or 3 shows that I've watched Of Battlestar, Heroes, or Lost. But Sanctuary definitely holds my interest. Couple of questions here- who manufactures the RED equipment? Not Sony, I hope. Why doesn't Sci-fi host a vote for viewer's favorite shows and notify everyone in their newsletters and on the air when it will be held? Or any network for that matter. There's a lot of us with different tastes watching our pay for commercials tv.

By DrWho at 5:28 PM ON 01/15/09

I like Doctor Who. I think the BBC should consider using the RED camera for the upcoming 5th season with the new Doctor, Matt Smith.

By the Ramen Noodle at 5:55 PM ON 01/15/09

@REDCAMWIZKID

I do regularly watch The Sanctuary (albeit, I'm a couple episodes behind on all of my shows). Perhaps my bias against it is the cheap 3D animation, the excessive green-screen set, and the fact that I'm more on the techy side of sci-fi than the fantasy side. I just never enjoyed vampires, I guess. Perhaps it's because, to me, the technologically based sci-fi like BSG or even Heroes (since it seems like genetic-manipulation is a little bit a part of things) are more believable than monsters, vampires, and the stuff of campfire ghost stories.

But of course, that's just my taste. So live on fans of The Sanctuary! May you be even happier once you get the Blu-Ray edition.

By mangababe at 6:58 PM ON 01/15/09

I wouldn't exactly call the digital mattes and animation cheap. Yes, there are some less-than-believable shots, but overall I think Sanctuary is one of the better new shows out there. The fact that they're shooting with the RED One is part of what makes a show done in this way possible

As a VFX artist (who has keyed more crappy DV and HDV plates that I can remember), RED footage is some of the cleanest and easiest to work with, especially when shooting green screen. Thanks for posting the video, I enjoyed the sneak peak at their RED workflow.

By 2coolbaby at 7:17 PM ON 01/15/09

I think that is neat. My family watches Sanctuary every Friday. I like it, but I find the fact that there are really only 4 people who fight these abnormals, of which only 2 seem like they could hold their own in a fight. I might buy that if it weren't for the fact that they are living in this HUGE multi-million dollar estate, with one guy to clean things up in it! I just have a hard time buying this. They need extras or more main characters that are strong. I liked the 5 or 4 now, but unless they end up helping them fight abnormals and the Cabal, then I just can't buy it. That doesn't stop me from watching it, as my granddaughter really likes it.

This is an awesome camera... I heard not a lot of film schools have this, especially in Asia where I am from. But I did come across one film school which did and they did this press thing for it..

I have to say that the RED is a phenomenal camera. It's the future of filmmaking.

By JIm at 1:36 PM ON 01/21/09

This is so amusing. Regardless of how good the resolution of the camera creating the product is, you are only going to be able to view the final product at the resolution of the video screen you own. The only person really benefitting at this point is the videographer and the very few who may own sets that can display at this resolution. Ain't technology wonderful?

By farren at 2:30 AM ON 01/30/09

That's a bogus argument. You want resolution in the production phase which is much, much higher than the final viewing resolution, just so the final will be as clean as possible. It's the same thing as why you want 1000 HP engines, or 2000 watt amplifiers. If you have higher resolution to work with, your final output will look better, period.

By zoddan269 at 9:10 PM ON 02/21/09

WOW red uh, with such high resolution why not do 3D filming this could push the medium that much more. after seeing Beowulf in 3d it really made me wonder why more movies and even that one was not released on blue ray in 3D. Just a thought, I know the the mega hertz on monitors today don't hit the 120's but this is a goal to reach, new media and new tech I hope. High def is nice but 3D would really get it you.

By Ancient J at 2:51 PM ON 03/04/09

Great new tech., but proof again that that you can't dress up a crappy show and make it shine.

By Tommy at 12:35 PM ON 03/05/09

So much for the old 8mm cameras...

By FredW at 7:13 PM ON 03/05/09

Graphic are good, now if they'd just hire someone to write interesting dialogue. I've been sooo disappointed with the wooden characters and lame dialogue with all those meaningful(?) stares at each other.

By tehtvgeek at 2:50 AM ON 03/15/09

Sanctuary is not the first show in North America to shoot on the RED camera. It is one of the first. The awesome heist/con show Leverage, which airs on TNT, also shoots exclusively with the RED.

It's a much better show than Sanctuary, both visually and creatively.

By Thera at 8:14 PM ON 03/24/09

Leverage started filming well after Sanctuary's first season was under way. The producers of Leverage even visited the Sanctuary set in Vancouver to see the RED camera at work and to observe the use of green screen sets. Undoubtedly, they were impressed with what they saw as they chose to use the RED camera themselves and incorporate some green screen sets into their show. So as far as I know, Sanctuary was the first television series to use the RED camera.

You are right about Leverage being awesome, but comparing it to Sanctuary is a little unfair as they are two completely different genres.

Visually, Sanctuary's sets are almost completely virtual and are meant to look somewhat unreal like a graphic novel. Leverage uses mainly practical sets that look more realistic visually b/c they are real.
