Knowing just how crappy sound quality can get when compressed onto an MP3 player or mobile phone, Dolby has developed a new technology to bring back some of what was lost in translation.
Dolby Mobile does a variety of things to improve the sound of music and movie soundtracks. It improves bass response, adds back some of the highs the compression process kills, adds dynamic compression to provide a less-dynamic (and more audible in noisy environments) soundtrack, plus adds a multi-band equalizer. It also provides a fairly convincing virtual surround sound, and even creates pseudo-stereo from a mono sound source.
All in all, if you're going to listen to a movie on your phone, try to get one equipped with Dolby Mobile. Recording engineers around the world thank you.
