While Barack Obama takes the oath of office today, the FBI, Secret Service and other federal agencies have rolled out the heavy machinery to protect him and millions of onlookers. Besides formidable machine guns, missiles, secret spy gear and all types of classified, unmentioned weaponry, the FBI will be using trucks and containers commonly seen in Iraq to protect against improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Pictured above are two highlights of the big iron employed by the government, featuring an MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicle that's able to shrug off explosions. And check out that ominous orb, a bomb containment vessel which can cart away explosives, or even detonate them inside itself with no harm done to bystanders. Check out the gallery below for more. Impressive, but it's too bad we need this stuff at all.

its not too bad. if people dont hate you, then you arent doing anything special enough to matter

If there's no bombs or people to shoot---then we didn't need it!
That's probably how it will turn out, and that's great.

The only real threat is government. This is just more psych work to keep the subjects in fear and subservient.

Why does the universally-loved Messiah need protection from a threat He claims doesn't exist?

"if people dont hate you, then you arent doing anything special enough to matter"
So I guess the Democrats think Bush was doing a lot of very special things.
The truth is that Obama's going to need this increased protection because he's a fascist like his followers, and a tyrant like his idol, Hitler.

I'm just glad that he's finally the president, so the media can calm down.
Hopefully by 2012 we will have some actual GOOD choices to choose from.
Not some old dude that wants to be everybody's friend.
and some black guy that loves socialism.
By Pointer Obvious at 7:08 PM ON 01/20/09
And hopefully, "MURC", we'll also have an electorate with the literacy the distinguish between the use of "who" and "that". As well as an electorate who know no American President including the present remotely comes close to the labels "totalitarian," "fascist," and "socialist" bandied about by this thread. The only thing embarrassing to America these days are people like these commentators.

Pointer Obvious - Barack Obama has stated we wants to take from the rich, to give to the poor.
thats socialism. (aka: the opposite of capitalism)
By Pointer Obvious at 11:00 PM ON 01/20/09
MURC, so basically we already live in a socialist state because of Social Security, Medicare, even the that 99.9% of school districts are funding by taxing people's land wealth, etc. Face it, the "socialism charge" was a desperate gamble to associate Obama's progressive economic policies with a "bad word" of 1950s political rhetoric playbook. You and the rest of your uneducated troll cohort thought the rest of America was as stupid as yourselves. I'm glad to see you and that gang proven wrong.
By Boborlarry at 4:54 PM ON 01/21/09
I should point out that the "machine gun" in the youtube video is most likely an electric minigun. Very nifty stuff though. That limo is a freaking tank. Note to Ghost1: most of your larger RVs can do that these days, but you're right it is pretty amazing!
By murc at 7:23 PM ON 01/21/09
pointer obvious - I agree, that their is already to much socialism going on. But Obama wants to take it to a whole other level, the biggest one being universal health care.
As for Obama winning. he won because of several factors, but it wasn't because of his policies.
While I am a republican, I dont hate Obama, instead a hope that he will do good...we shall see in the coming 4 years.
So far the only thing I have heard recently is that he is going to close down Guantanamo bay...so far that makes him. 0-1

Noting the ignorance expressed on these comments perhaps a word... we have a deocratically elected President, and there are no challenges, or doubt as to the election as has been in the past... white , black, yellow or invisible, there is a president, we have a costitution, and if you are an Amercan... you will stand behind him... with another American standing next to you... or find yourself another country...

Why, do the righties have to keep spouting off? Sore loser syndrome? Stupidity?
I was reading a non-political local travel blog yesterday showing photos taken on a cross-country Amtrak ride from LA to D.C and even there some idiot had to put a rightie political slant on it.
I know you guys like to use FEAR to keep us all on edge, and you're in great company - Bush/Cheney did it, Hitler did it, Stalin did it, Kim Jong-il does it, Saddam did it.
And for some reason "socialism" scares the crap out of you guys and you think it will scare the crap out of everyone else. Well I don't want socialism, nor do I want fascism, and even though there were strong hints of it with bush/cheney/rove, I'm not going to be so stupid to say we had a chance of becoming a fascist state. So lay off your "soscialism" crap - you just sound stupid!
I mean just so you don't keep making fools of yourselves, here's the Mirriam-Webster def of socialism.
so·cial·ism
1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
2 a: a system of society or group living in which there is no private property b: a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state
3: a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done
or
Economically, socialism denotes an economic system of state ownership and/or worker ownership of the means of production and distribution. Ain't even close to anything we got going on here!
By any of those definitions, even taken to extremes, everything proposed by the Demos doesn't come close to socialism. Yeah, obviously a lot of govt involvement, but not "socialism"! So find another word for it, so we can stop thinking all you right-dingers are just plain illiterate.
Oh - before I go - PEACE OUT!

We've had universal, free health care in the UK for around 50 years now. It does not equate to socialism. It just protects the countries wealth being blackmailed away by the unscrupulous health and pharmaceutical industries. Go for it America. It doesn't hurt anymore!

I just hope the new prez stays a few nights a week at a Holiday Inn Express...I wonder how long the honeymoon will last before the American people wake up and realize this 'community organizer' just wants to increase the welfare state to the point that no one has to earn, yes earn, the money that they receive.

I'm sorry, Traveler, but what the hell? "More psych work to keep the people in fear and subservient"??? I mean, seriously, what would happen if they didn't have security. Sure, lots of people love Obama, but, as much as we'd like to think otherwise, plenty of Americans are racist, and some of them wouldn't think twice about killing Obama. Go live in your fantasy world, if you like, but I'm gonna stay here, where Obama's still ALIVE!
By Eklypse0 at 4:36 PM ON 01/22/09
INteresting thing about the 'Universal Health Care' idea. Where is the money going to come from? We are already 54 trillion in debt (Based on future forecasts of our spending and our obligations.) The American Comptroller, that even if we don't increase any spending, such as adding UHC, in 2040, America will only be able to afford Social Security and Medicare. That is it, no military, nothing else.
By Murc at 9:29 PM ON 01/22/09
I don't need Websters definition, I know what it means.
As a republican, One of the BIGGEST differences between republicans and democrats, is the size of government.
we want a small government, we want them to stay out of our way, we don't need them making everything run slower thanks to bureaucracy.
While the Dems LOVE big government, they want to meddle in everyone's business, and create tons of government jobs, and create as many government programs as they possibly can.
Over 40% of our GDP is spent on Social Security and Medicare, surprise...surprise, both of those money hungry programs were created by democrats.
And now you want to add health care to that!
Where's my motivation to work if all my money goes to the government?

MURC
You forget that the Bush Administration increased government size by leaps and bounds, more then probably any Democrat in history. And for a "republican", he's put us so much in debt, that every single person in America, from newborn to those on their aged death bed, has an implicit mortgage of ~$150k to pay for it. A difference from Clinton, a Democrat, who had ended his term with a $5t in the black. But, that could be likely because he robbed Peter to pay Paul (by siphoning Social Security funds.)
I registered as a Republican this last year only because my candidate rolled on as a Republican. It's amazing how Ron Paul had predicted the economic crisis, decades earlier. He was laughed at by the other candidates, then ignored by the media, after taking every single poll by storm as #1. It took until the last quarter of 2008 before Bush and all the presidential candidates went from "Our Economy is Strong!" to "We are in trouble...".
The media commented off hand that it was just because the people voting in the poles were spamming them. (One funny one was after a televised Republican debate. The News caster stating just that, "The Ron Paul Supporters are just calling the Poll again and again." But then it was proven that one phone, one poll vote.
Then the GOP and media chose our candidates for us by only televising Obama and McCain. None of the other Dems or Repubs were shown. Not a single one of the Independents were shown either.
In the end, there are now the Republicrats and the Demokins. The only differences between those two parties are now only mostly cosmetic.

1) I'm guessing here, but one possible reason the Secret Service might have been concerned about Pres. Obama's safety could be that he is black, and there's been an odd history of black leaders being assassinated by dumb people in this country. That could just be it.
2) Regardless of your political views, Pres. Obama has accomplished more in his first 100 hours in office than former Pres. Bush did in his first 100 days in office.
I was serving overseas when 9/11 happened, and I watched a nation come together from a distance. Then I watched something even more remarkable - I saw most of the world come together supporting us and wanting to help. And we did what was right - we went after the man responsible.
Within one year, former Pres. Bush destroyed that by telling lies to sidetrack us into a war in Iraq "to get those durned WMDs." The world stopped supporting us because they realized how stupid that was.
We could have easily built a powerful international coalition to fight terrorism with an unprecedented number of nations cooperating.
Instead, we got bogged down in two wars, both of which have lasted longer than all of WWII - neither of which we've made much progress in. Most of the world refused to have anything to do with us until recently, and N. Korea and Iran are suddenly major threats too.
A blindfolded monkey in a straightjacket could have led our nation through the aftermath of 9/11 with more aplomb, and achieved a much better end result.
And don't get me started on the number of times the Bush administration skirted or outright violated this nation's Constitution in the name of "anti-terrorism." From GITMO (declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in Nov. 08) to the wire-tapping which somehow got swept under the carpet before it ever was properly investigated, to his original election, decided by Supreme Court vote regarding the state of Florida. Folks, the Constitution provides for the electoral college - and nowhere does it say the Supreme Court gets to break a tie.
History will decide for certain, but I believe George W. Bush is a strong contender for the title of "worst President in U.S. history." I've yet to find one positive thing he did for our country that couldn't have been done better by anyone else.
As for the tech, there's some decent stuff here, but all pretty standard EOD stuff - just top of the line EOD stuff. I'm not sure why they brought the missiles though - but better safe than sorry I suppose.
By Murc at 2:30 PM ON 01/25/09
Eklypse0 - I agree with some of what you said.
I voted for McCain, but he was one of the worst candidates running. My top 2 favs were Romney and Huckabee. Ron Paul...maybe as a VP...certainly not the head honcho. My biggest disagreement with him is that he wants open borders, he kept saying things like 'theirs so such thing as an illegal human being'. I want a wall on the US/Mex border to stop the cascade of mexicans from crossing the border. thousands of people died near that border just last year...but the media doesn't cover it because it would make their (left) views look bad.
cscornette - what has Obama done in his first 100 hours? (other then say he's going to close gitmo...which is a mistake).
BTW, it doesn't matter what the supreme court thinks of gitmo...our constitution doesn't' effect it cause its not on US soil.
Bush (in 2000) won using the electoral college...
Bush will/should go down in history as a good president. we haven't had an attack on our soil since 9/11. We won the war in Iraq...thanks to David Petraeus who planned the "surge". We would have lost that war if we listens to the democrats.
As for worst president...don't worry, Nobody's going to steal Jimmy Carters crown.

[Bush will/should go down in history as a good president. we haven't had an attack on our soil since 9/11. We won the war in Iraq...thanks to David Petraeus who planned the "surge". We would have lost that war if we listens to the democrats.]
That has a big fallacy. First, Iraq had no connection to 9/11. The CIA report quoted was changed from (approx) "Iraq has no intention of committing aggression towards America." to "Iraq has ** intention of committing aggression towards America." Nothing was added, just tiny edits which reversed the meaning of the report. Which is why Bush went after Hussein because he had WMDs.. However, they never found any WMDs. Then after no WMDs were found, Bush stated that he was there for the Iraqi people!
Bush was absolutely had every intention to go to war with Iraq, regardless that they had no danger posed to the U.S. He kept slinging mud until something stuck. But instead of _saving_ the Iraqi people, we (collectively as Americans who have not yet indited Bush for war crimes, murder and terrorism.) killed over 650,000 civilians: men, women, children and infants.
There have been no foreign attacks on US soil before, nor after 9/11. Are you saying that Bush's policies protected us after a single 'isolated' event by attacking a country that was 'innocent' of the 'terrorist' attack?
In addition, there is _no_ proof that Usama Bin Laden had anything to do with 9/11. Go ahead, look at FBI most wanted page. (I'll wait!) There is not a single mention of any domestic (in continental America) terrorist attacks as reasons he is wanted. Bin Laden is on the Most Wanted, but all the reasons listed are off of the continental US. (At one time he was wanted for 'questioning' in conjunction of 9/11. But he was never on FBI for actually being a 'part' of 9/11. It seems that even that was taken down.)
So ALL of Bush's stated reasons for going over and killing people in Iraq failed the test. The only REAL reason was so that US could control the oil fields, and that certain favored companies could make *billions* in profits from the war.
There has never been a worse president in the US's history then Bush. He has been the most incompetent leader we have ever had. He took our country, and destroyed it's economy.
We are in the death throws of a depression. Only a sudden reduction in gas prices and throwing money on the fire to burn had delayed it. There is no going back until we go though it. It is going to be a long, hard, time.

I'm not sure of what you said. Did you say Ron Paul wanted open borders? If so, no, he did not. Time and time again he was quoted on wanting to 'close' the borders from 'illegal' immigration. Bush has wanted open borders though out his entire office. He 'started' a wall, and all of the funds to do it were appropriated for it. However the wall construction stopped before anything significant was made.
If Bush was afraid of terrorist attacks on American soil, why did he take nearly all of the Border Patrol away from it? And why did he allow the prosecution of two Border Patrol Agents that had stopped an illegal crossing who was "drug trafficking"!

I have a question. If Obama got shot at with a sniper rifle wouldn't he get shot in the head? I mean even a crappy sniper would.
Or why not use a ground to ground missile? But that wouldn't work because the FBI probably has some missile defense system.
Not that any should kill Obama! If they did I seriously would join the army. And I hate the army because I was raised in a eight years that taught me that all the army could do was cause death and destruction while not even getting the bad guys.

Generally, most snipers aim for the chest. It is the best target for the attack. At distances a sniper would have to shoot at to be out of range of the immediate surveillance.
Ground to ground missile. Really, I doubt that FBI has a 'working' model that would defeat such a thing within a urban area. The distances involved gives nearly no time at all to respond.
I'm still waiting for Obama to produce his 'long form' Birth certificate, a 'requirement' for the president to show as proof of his natural citizenship.
It was interesting to note that both McCain, Obama, along with supporters were pushing, years earlier, that the requirement for Natural Citizenship not be required for Presidential candidacy. (Obama was reported to be born in Kenya, a British Colony, making him part British. McCain was not born in the continental USA either.
