Fuel cells for your car — in a pinch

Medis-fuelcell-ces01.jpg

We're still hoping to see more fuel cell vehicles in the future, but Medis Technologies' wants to put one of their Power Pack fuel cells in your trunk now...for emergencies.

The cell itself is "passive" technology; no pumps, valves or complex moving parts that consume some of the energy produced. You simply pull the green tab off the fuel cell, squeeze it, and wait for a bit.

In their new emergency kits, they package the fuel cell with an LED flashlight, and charger cord and adaptor tips to charge up your cell phone. This way you can call for help before you become horror movie fodder when your car breaks down.

The fuel itself is borohydride-based, and unlike the usual fuel-cell components of methanol or hydrogen, it's a non-flammable and chemically stable fuel source that's easy to obtain and handle.

The Power Pack provides 20 watt/hours of energy, and comes packed with a mail-back recycling package to get a new cell once it's spent. It hits stores next month, with the plastic-cased emergency kit selling for $59, and the cardboard-boxed version for home for $49.

Note that the flashlight will last for days at a constant level - no dimming as with batteries. So if you are stranded, at least you won't be in the dark.
