Cut-out skateboard looks pretty, fragile

loren-kulesus-ipsvm-skateboards.jpgThis is the IPSVM skateboard, a concept design by Loren Kulesus that cuts out a good chunk of material from the deck of the board. On the plus side, it would make the board much lighter, and it looks really awesome. On the downside, something tells me that this thing would break in half after about five minutes of riding. But hey, just buy 50 of them to keep on hand!

It's the classic problem with concept designs: they look cool, but they never seem to be based in any kind of reality. But for eye candy, they really can't be beat.

Actually it could be as strong as a more conventional skateboard, it really depends what it's made of and how skilled the designer is. It would be a lot more expensive though, to make on of a decent strength that looks like this one does. Great item if you're a skateboarder.

Yeah... i'd definately want metal bracing on this one. maybe runners along the edge of each piece of wood (buried in a groove, you wouldn't even have to see them). The metal would give the board the board the flex strength to make it a great design. Well, obviously the lattice would be more effective designed in some kind of regular pattern to distribute load more evenly, but even as it is with a bit of metal ribbing (probably not even more weight than was cut out... maybe) it would take a hard landing much better than a conventional plank.

Actually, screw this concept. Get rid of the wood completely and make the thing out of woven alloy stips (mebbe an inch wide and with enough thickness that they don't want to bend noticeably under normal human weight and the length of a board). I'm sure you could get the weight right, its just a matter of whether you're spending more on the metal than anyone will pay for a board. But it wouldn't break (I think skaters go through quite a lot of boards, right?) and it would be so much better for heavy load work. Like say you want to hit an awesome looking wallride; just put a bit more horizontal force into your jump and hit that wall real hard. The board will buck in and then push back outwards, but the wheels would spend much more time in apparent contact w/ the wall because of the movement compensation of the flex (your weight pushes it in first, then the board is pushing back and pushing off the walls w/ the wheels until its full flex is over). You could run a lot more tricks in a row as well; every time you hit this thing you're going to get a good bit more upwards thrust from the board than with wood). hehe, while you're at it skip the skateboarding thing totally and add some juiced up self contained wheels to the trucks; skateboarding would be much more interesting at sixty mph than twenty (think Air Gear) heh.
