Conductive plates let you cook food right on them

conductiveplates.jpgHere's an idea: why not put technology into plates that lets them keep our food warm for us? That way, things won't get cold on our plates and we can keep the microwave turned off. And heck, maybe we could run enough juice through them to cook a whole meal while we're at it.

The designs for conductive plates are just concepts at the moment, but the technology is all available now to make these a reality. The downside would be, of course, that you'd need to have cords at the dinner table, not to mention the logistics of washing plates with plugs in them. But hey, it's certainly a neat idea, isn't it?

Two words: Frickin Wireless Power.

How about a few more...

POTENTIAL FIRE or BURN HAZARD.

By Vance at 6:40 PM ON 01/26/09

These could be feasible if the 'wireless power' prototypes out there develop well. I remember there was one where a special disk or dot would be placed in certain counter-tops or tables and it could power any appropriate electronic device placed over it. That could work with these plates.

I believe using the plates to COOK would be far more difficult than simply keeping food warm. To cook food well you have to consider much more than just how much heat it produces, like heat distribution and safety. Also, you could use inexpensive products to produce ~120F to keep something warm, but it would be much more expensive to create a custom material to withstand up to 300-400F on the top while insulating the bottom, so as to not burn your table.

Honestly, if you really want to cook on a plate, you might as well buy a bunch of pans INSTEAD of plates.

Hello.. forget the power cord and cordless power and all that, just make the plates out of metal and use them with induction cooktops. Place the plate right on the burner.. cook your stuff and move to the dinner table. Same concept, but probably a little easier to execute.

I want credit for the idea (with inspiration attributed to this article) :)

This will go great with my asbestos lined, lead-painted, Smurfs TV-tray set and Wolfgang Puck self-exploding coffee.

...should we be concerned about EMFs?

By proper_kill at 7:54 PM ON 01/26/09

and you run the risk of burning the crap outof your hand

So it can cook, but can it blend?

I have read with interest the article about conductive plates. Perhaps I have missed the information about where to buy & the price but I have been unable to find either. If the product is available, this information would be helpful.
Thank you.
