Zunes all stop working at the same time, no solution available

deadzunes.jpgOwn a Zune? Well, I hope you weren't counting on using it today, because last night at 2am, every single 30GB Zune stopped working at the same time. Oh my god, it's Z2K!

No one seems to know just what is going on, but at 2am, all Zunes reset themselves and then froze on the loading screen. Dead as a doornail. Microsoft is currently looking into the situation, which clearly has something to do with the date (although it was a little early for New Years). This is a strange one, folks.

I don't find it strange at all just typical Microsoft. We all know their issues with the Windows OS, the Xbox 360's hardware failures and this is actually over due IMO far as Zunes.

It a bit early for New Years but right on for leap year. Most are saying that its just not recognizing this 366th day and if nothing else it will resolve itself tomorrow.

Has anyone taken into consideration that today is the 366th day of the year? I have a feeling that the software isn't leap-year compliant. :)

I got mine working even after it fell to the bug, and I know what's wrong, there's some problem with the way the Zune deals with the date on the 30GB models, and only those with the latest (3.1) firmware. The solution for me involved changing my PCs system time back several months, opening the Zune and pulling the battery, replacing the battery and doing a hard reset (which wipes the zune), connecting it to the PC and re-syncing. It was a pain, but it is working. I wouldn't call it a "solution" for most users, as it voids warranties and involves some PC knowledge, but it works for me.

@steelsmack.

Or you could just have waitied until tomorrow and it would have fixed itself.

But whatever floats your boat I guess.

Great. Microsoft innovates a new bug, for a relatively new product (one Microsoft year is roughly equivalent to seven human years -- check out the time between OS releases, e.g.), and then only discovers it when it's too late. Procrastination (read: incompetence) seems to be one of their strengths, if not also a social skill.
Bad enough that tax payers, consumers and businesses footed a bill totalling hundreds of millions of dollars for their Y2K debacle. (Oh. We forgot the century was turning. Our bad.) Now, owners of their failed "iPod killer" have to suffer yet another insult, beyond a significant degree of insult that obtains from the simply fact of owning a Zune.

When does it end? It ends when Microsoft discovers a bug that dissolves their incompetent corporate mismanagement. Oh, wait. That bug was already discovered but, because Microsoft is Microsoft, noboday cared. Except for those zanie Microsoft Kool Aid drinkers who seem to believe that every POS Microsoft creates is touched by Midas himself.

Thanks again Microsoft. You're nothing if not consistent.

My Zune 30gig works fine.
I have the newest software so there has to be something else the zunes have in common.

Guys come ON. The devices were out of it for just ONE DAY and everybody gets into the whole "OH boy, typical Microsoft!" routine. We've heard it before, and the majority is just not with you on this one. Vista was released much too early, yes, but today it's shaped up into a decent OS and one I'd still take over Apple. The 360 is a mess, but Microsoft fixes every defective system for free. And it'd be cool if the DVICE crew could say a little more about this Zune "bug", because as of this morning virtually every Zune went back to normal. I know mine did. I've had mine for 2 years now and this is the first hiccup it's ever hit on the hardware end. Try and tell me that iPod owners can say the same on a regular basis, I beg you.

After all the crap problems I have gone through with iPod/iTunes, my family switched to Zunes and will never go back. None of ours have this problem, but we have newer ones. Those are the initial release ones.

hahaha i was in spain at the time and i was pissed cus it just stopped working, mine is working fine now though, i just let the battery die a few times and charged it and it started working

By WorldsGr8estDad at 3:34 PM ON 01/09/09

Zune, Walkman, whatever you want to use has got to be better than shelling out beau coup bucks for the latest iCrap or iTunes even if they have occasional hiccups.
