Windspire vertical wind turbine supplies 25% of your power for $5K

windspire-home-20081130-600.jpg

We're eager to set up a wind turbine here on the windswept prairie of the U.S., but don't want to bother the neighbors with all that whooshing noise. The Windspire vertical wind turbine design might be just what we're looking for. Mariah Power says this 1.2KW $5000 turbine, now on sale for the first time, is quiet, and it doesn't look too bad, either — it may be attractive enough to get by even the finickiest homeowners' association.

The shape of this 29.5-foot-tall vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) has been around for a while, dating back to ancient Egyptians, but Mariah Power is making it more practical. They're saying this model can provide 25-30% of the power needed in a typical house. There's even a Wi-Fi transmitter on board so you can monitor its output on your PC.

The company says it's working on a wider 3KW version that's the same height, and it could supply all the power you need. There's no word on pricing of the larger turbine, but combined with a 30% government rebate, the prospect of seeing our electric meter spinning backwards is an irresistible incentive. Take a look at a video of the Windspire in action:

"finickiest"...? Shouldn't that be "most finicky"?

Yes it should be "Most finicky" and you are a great example.

"Finickiest" gets the point across quite well and sounds more fun though.

Well, it is pretty cool... but way to expensive for common peoples :(

How about a ~$500.00 kit for those of us who like to experiment? About 100W will do.

is the $5k cost before or after the 30% govt kickback? also, is install $ extra, and approx. cost.

$5000 USD is a good deal. Only if the deal includes the inverter, PC software, wiring, and ... oh, ... 2 bags of cement!

Can anyone comment on what exactly is included in the $5000 price tag?

the website lists what you get for the price but it doesn't give the current price. I'm saitine for the 3 Kw version, it should be in production when I build my retirement home. You can find small kits at windstuffnow.com. I'm excited about the prospects.

My state is kicking in an additional 4500.00 for turbines that produce 1kw looks like testing started by the n.e.r.l. in feb of 08. If approved that makes this paticular little doo-dadd quite appealing.
