SmartDriver might just be the perfect power screwdriver

blackdecker_smartdriver.jpg

Here's one of those ideas that you wonder what took so long: a power driver that holds your screw for you. The Black & Decker LI4000 SmartDriver's arm extends out to just the right spot, and its magnetic tip holds the screw in place as you drive it home.

Look at that — the $40 lithium ion-powered screwdriver even has a helpful LED that lights your way in those tight, dark spots. We're a huge fan of power drivers, and the bursting-with-creativity Black & Decker might have just brought that tool to the verge of perfection.

This is so silly.

Why won't Americans ever use the Robertson screw?

By Petra at 1:58 PM ON 12/15/08

I like it.

But I still like a sonic screwdriver more.

Great notice! Why did it take so long for solutions like these? I think that many times those big companies don't follow a basic rule: HEAR THE CUSTOMER NEEDS. We should have products like these available on the shelves since many time ago.

Great for Black and Decker.

@CDN EH?
Seriously? Why say something so asinine?

By Murc at 11:20 PM ON 12/15/08

CRAYSH - how is that asinine?

CDN EH - judging by what you said, and your name, I assume your Canadian. Most Americans do continue to use flat & Philips, and I dont see that changing in the near future.

I am an electrician, and 95% of the screws we (the company I work for) use, are square drive...or as you call them "the robertson screw".

CRAYSH - the reason that his answer wasn't "asinine" is because square drive screws hold onto your (square headed) screwdriver or bit, no need for a gimmicky screw holding arm or magnetic bits.

Black & Decker is reeeaaally reaching with this one (no pun intended), its a dumb gimmick, just like their auto-wrench.

By Craysh at 7:13 PM ON 12/16/08

@Murc
Because his statement aimed at insulting Americans, not extolling the virtues of the square screwdriver.
Which makes it asinine.

This really is a neat little tool. Lithium screwdrivers have really come down in price that almost anyone can justify having one. I love it around the shop. Much lighter than my 14 Volt cordless!

Great idea, needs refinement
