Reentering shuttle causes double sonic boom, scares the crap out of people

The space shuttle Endeavor just returned from a delivery mission to the International Space Station where it brought, among other things, new bedrooms and a system for converting urine and sweat into drinkable water. But when it reentered the atmosphere, it caught much of California's attention. Why? It created a double sonic boom, that's why.

As the video above shows, the booms were incredibly loud, audible throughout Los Angeles and the surrounding areas. People unaware of what was happening thought an explosion had gone off in their neighborhood, causing emergency lines to be flooded with calls. Luckily for all involved, Endeavor landed safely and no one was hurt. Hit the jump for another video of the shuttle's reentry.

Seriously, americans are so easily panicked.
Where I live in Holland a jet breaks through the sound-barriere almost daily and nobody cares...

Seriously, not a very smart comment, Maran. Obviously if a double sonic boom happened on an almost daily basis in LA, no one would have cared. And last I heard, half the world's terrorists were *not* threatening Holland.

Seriously, Tank. Not a smart comment. Of course Holland is being threatened, what with publishing cartoons of Mohamed, not to mention their whores, and the drugs, and all the rest.

Man, I need to vacation there again. ;-)

I was one of the many in L.A. that got the double Sonic Boom treatment. My car especially loved it. Tank, just ignore people like Maran. They forget that their corner of the world is not just like everywhere else so if he lives with Sonic booms because his gov't doesn't care to stop the planes from that type of destructive noise pollution good for him but once again F- on the "open mind" concept so many across the pond pride themselves upon.

Wow - people from Holland are SO gullible. A writer implies that people panicked, and they believe it.

Maran, did you see or hear any panic? Mind telling us where? All I saw was people saying "Whoa!", and then giggling.

Oh, maybe that's it - do people laugh in Holland when they are panicked? What a strange country where people giggle when they are panicked.

I guess when you've had airplanes flown into major buildings and thousands killed, a couple of loud, unexpected explosions shouldn't scare people. What a stupid remark Maran. And if you listen to the people, yes, you can tell they were startled. Maran, close enough to moron. Explains it all.

OK guys, cut it out now. Please remember that "America" is a rather broad generalization, as it is such a large place. Life in one city can be totally different from life in another city (or even state or county...). For instance, I live on a military base, and it is quite normal to hear booms and guns and other such things on a daily basis. When you travel to L.A. however, it is not a normal thing to hear.

Also, a double boom is not quite as common as a single boom, if I am not mistaken.

Great video, wish I could actually see something like that! I would love to see a launch in person one time, and a re-entry as well....

I work in the satellite and rocket industry and didn't know what this was. My guess was a sonic boom from a military test aircraft. This was also not your typical sonic boom, it shook my house and i could feel it from probably a hundred miles away. I've seen many regular fighter jets and such break the sound barrier and it wasn't very similar to this.
