Students at the Royal College of Art in London were tasked with dreaming up what shape light, economical cars could take in this day and age. What did they come up with? Vehicles that are quirky and awesome — though quite impractical in many cases — and decked out with cool lights, color schemes and pictures of the robo-rockers from Daft Punk. Who cares if these cars couldn't exist? It'd make for one good-looking future in my book.
Check out the gallery below to see more designs from the students.

N-A-S-T-Y. And not in a good way.
BTW, your gallery display sucks. When I click on "Next", it refreshes the whole page, then I have to wait for the graphics to load, and finally the page scrolls down and the photo pops up. Ever heard of AJAX, or at the very least, show the gallery in a new window so that I don't have to wait for the entire page to load again. See Engadget or Gizmodo for more info.

I agree with PHOENIX on the gallery issues, luckily I have a fast connection.
Putting that aside, some of the design look pretty good, other look like they've been made by someone who just discovered the MeshSmooth function in 3DS Max.
Too bad the best looking ones will never be put into production because of pedestrian-safety...

May I be the first to say that I am glad art students do not rule the auto industry.

The role of design competitions isn't to create practical vehicles -- it's to break the conceptual box. (In the same way small children must be taught that trees are not lollipops.) It's the engineers who can then figure out which elements are mechanically and economically feasible, and what compromises are necessary.
And if the engineers don't use the designs, well, the science fiction illustrators can.

I like all the designs except for the one in the main article. The Daft Punk one is the best one. Hopefully we'll use horses and bicycles in the future.
