As nerd culture has ascended to the mainstream dozens of manufacturers have rushed out t-shirts and gadgets designed to make the non-geek look decidedly techy. But while proving geek cred via subtle accessories has become tougher, you can still one-up the average tech poseur with this surprisingly stylish anti-static wristband from Taiwan's BHO Tech. No it doesn't tell time, store digital media, or play a snappy tune, but for a common anti-static wristband, aside from allowing you to safely work on the innards of your PC, this is a sure fire conversation starter available for just 999 yen ($11) here.

Any state-side sites in Engrish? I would actually make a purchase.

You really need to put a link in english for some sales. I am very intrested.

Anti-static? Well, personally I think it's bullshit :) Looks like a half-made shiny watch.. To secure your electronics from electro-static discharge this thing should be connected to the earth/ground (in electrical meaning). That thing on the picture IS NOT grounded = it's no better than normal watch. Yay for geniuses from Taiwan.

It does work. To a point. These things do not do all they claim. I have one of these because i do computer repair and i thought it would be easier then having to ground myself. But i found out they remove ASD from your body and disperse it slowly. It is not going to ground you out and remove a bunch of static right away. Therefore don't bother getting one if your going to be touching anything super sensitive to ASD.

Sorry I am feeling stupid right now. I meant ESD not ASD.

This looks like most any anti-static wrist strap... and NONE of them will work at all unless you actually connect the strap something grounded. The only purpose of the anti-static strap is to provide a connection point for a ground wire!

Yeah BS_OVER_S, I know what is anti-static strap for. I was just saying that those pictures show no connecting link to the ground, so maybe its not provided with this "product". And seeing the price - people should be more interested to look for something different in their local stores..

Xant and BS. This is designed to work without the strap; i.e. a "strapless" wrist strap. For some people or purposes, it would be invaluable, if it works. But like Tec mentions, there might be a huge mystery factor, which you don't want. The last thing anyone needs is a device that "might" be protecting them. That's worse than nothing at all. At least with nothing, you are careful. If you think you're static free, you are likely to use less caution. My work environment makes it impossible to be strapped to ground, so I have to take every precaution not to touch anything sensitive. "Knowing" I was static free would be nice, though.

Oh, and BS, I forgot to mention. You do not have to be grounded to be static safe. If all voltage potential differences are removed, there's no jump to occur. As a matter of fact, in a poorly controlled environment, the items your handling can develop a static charge over time and if you are grounded, you will discharge the items static charge when you touch it, creating the same damage. Also, this damage usually doesn't result in instant fail, but often a slow degradation in the small current pathways that leads them to early and unexplainable failure during normal usage later on. So, ten static discharges might accumulate enough damage to make the hardware suddenly "blow a fuse" so to speak during normal or heightened usage, during which time a healthy, undamaged connection would handle the load just fine. Then yhou have a perfectly good board that just won't work, but you can find nothing wrong with it, or worse, it often works, except when it doesn't, and drives you crazy forever.

TEC: You own one, so I trust your experience over the rest of these guys' opinions. I work with a lot of electronic devices as a cell phone tech (cell phones, laptops, SIM cards, etc.) and I'm constantly walking around, so I can't feasibly use a grounding wire unless it lets me walk across the whole lab. Will this keep me from shocking my coworkers and the electronics in the room? Or should I look elsewhere? (DON'T ANSWER unless you have one. Not looking for opinions, people.)
