What is the most badass gun from sci-fi movies?

hellboy_bigbaby.jpg

Our friends over at SCI FI Wire have a rundown of the six most kick-ass guns from sci-fi movies. Hellboy's Big Baby features prominently, and the machine pistol from RoboCop is there, too. Funny how you typically have to be a some kind of superpowered demon or a cyborg to have one of these suckers. Personally, we always liked Megatron's fusion cannon (inset) — that's the one from the '80s TV series, not the live-action flick.

Do you have a favorite sci-fi gun? Hit us with it in the comments. And in case you think all of these are just flights of fancy, check out this real-world stun rifle and this terrifying portable nuclear cannon.

I'm going to have to say the shotgun on Halo I and I choose this because this gun helped to lead me to many glorious victories!

Has to be the mini-gun from Predator. Best gun to ever hit the big screen, most new ones have been rip-offs.

I would have to go with the Wave Motion Gun from Star Blazers (Space Battleship Yamato). I used to love that show when I was a kid and have yet to see anything like it (other than the Death Star). Second would have to be the Noisy Cricket from MIB.

By JackCross at 1:56 PM ON 11/07/08

Noisy Cricket gets my vote.

Megatron IS a gun. Ho much more bada$$ can you get?

Vera, from Firefly. Not a prominent weapon... but it certain made the "Mrs. Reynolds" episode that much more enjoyable.

By Boxerfanatic at 2:49 PM ON 11/07/08

Awww, man... Somebody already mentioned Vera. "it is my very favorite gun."

"See, Vera? Dress yourself up, you get taken out somewhere fun.!"

I have to say, I like Mal's custom octagonal barrel sidearm. Much more intimidating than Jubil Early's little toy, no matter how finely it was crafted. Yet Mal's gun is very much a worn-in, trusted partner of a weapon.

"Well, my days of not taking you seriously are certainly comin' to a middle."

The ZF-1 from the Fifth Element puts all those guns to shame!

By XVIIarcano at 5:38 AM ON 11/08/08

If it is ok to quote from anime, the cross machinegun from Trigun!

By dave at 8:57 AM ON 11/08/08

I now its not a movie, but Ronan's gun from SGA...

By CJW at 2:33 PM ON 11/08/08

Mad Max's Double Barreled sawed off
Terminator 2 Mini Gatlin gun or MM1 grenade launcher
Barbarella's rifle
The Death Star

By Still badass at 6:36 AM ON 11/09/08

BOBADIAH great choice! The Wave motion gun could wipe out whole galaxies, those were the days :)
But in terms of one carried around by someone, how about the Rock's in DOOM? "BIG GUN!"

By Letsil at 8:05 PM ON 11/09/08

Wait wait wait... You want to know the best gun ever? Mega-man X's hand blaster! Its a part of his arm for peats sake!

By Rich at 2:12 AM ON 11/10/08

I liked the gun the guys in The Hitchikers Guide to The Galaxy went off to get.
You know, the one that made men understand feelings.. ;-)
Horrbile thing in Marvins hands..

By snakerake at 10:26 AM ON 11/10/08

It's a little obvious, but my favorite will always be Han Solo's Blaster. I would say it is one of the best props ever made, its sound was perfect, and what other gun was weilded in a more badazz way... Took down Greedo, Stormtroopers, and even took a few pot shots at Vader... What other gun could make those claims...

By silentdole at 10:11 AM ON 11/11/08

the best seems to have been forgotten
how about the lawgiver from Judge Dredd. nifty little sidearm to have around with functions like fully automatic, flare, grenade and of course double whammy. than don't forget that it cannot be handled by anyone with a different DNA than yourself and it leaves a genetic flag for who ever fired it on each bullet.

The Ixian "Weapom" from ChapterHouse: Dune.

Stand in front of a million man army, and watch them fall as the life simply leaves their bodies. Single shot, unfortunately.

By triage at 10:20 PM ON 11/13/08

pulse rifle, aliens. i still have dreams about that damn thing...

By Soatari at 10:57 PM ON 11/14/08

I'm gonna go with the Samaritan from Hellboy. It's not particularly special, but I love the way he introduces it in the first movie. "I'm not a good shot, but the Samaritan here shoots really big bullets."

I think a real close second would go to the pulse blaster thing from Minority Report.

By immortal_omni at 10:40 AM ON 11/22/08

since we are including cartoons and anime, my number one would have to be the caster gun from outlaw star

By nugundam93 at 7:00 PM ON 12/17/08

+1 on megatron. he's a gun.

or not a movie anyway, but from a photo-novel - the BFG that the FA-010-A FAZZ carries.

By argonnj at 7:05 PM ON 01/08/09

My vote goes to the Sandman's gun from Logan's Run. It shoots flames and looks cool as hell.

By Mogamboo at 7:59 AM ON 01/09/09

I vote for "The Rail Gun" that shoots projectiles at near light speed from the Movie 'The Eraser'.

By Veryl at 12:59 AM ON 02/19/09

I can't believe no-one mentioned the BFG... But I guess the only MOVIE that used it sucked so much most of you forgot it. Or (also not from a movie) what about the "little doctor" aka "doctor device" from the book Ender's Game? Better than the death star...

By Veryl at 1:01 AM ON 02/19/09

oops, I meant the doom/quake BFG, not the photo-novel one (which WAS mentioned)

By winraven at 3:03 AM ON 05/14/09

i know its not technically a gun but my vote if for vash's angel arm from trigun
