Tango T600 electric car hits the road

tango_car.jpg

Commuter Cars's Tango T600, the world's quickest and "most luxurious" two-seater electric car, has hit the streets and may soon be scooting between lanes of backed-up traffic near you.

Shorter than an average motorcycle, the Tango is about five inches narrower than Honda's Goldwing touring motorbike, and about five inches taller than Honda's top-selling Civic, meaning you can park it virtually anywhere. It also means, in states like California where motorcycles can legally split lanes in traffic, you can cut valuable time off your commute.

The Tango goes from 0 to 60 in 4 seconds, with a tip speed of 130 mph. It's said to be designed to survive 200mph crashes, with four times more protective steel in each door than a typical SUV. It retails, in kit form, for $108,000 (estimated assembly time = eight hours), with delivery "within six months."

About freaking time! I'd first see this company back in 2003. I kept waiting for them to come out with something, and am surprised that it took another five years. Doesn't look like the design has changed much (except for the open air). Neat cars, and the site has some VERY cool videos of the car in action! Yes, it's a little fugly, but in the interest of full disclosure, I love my Austin Mini Cooper, too...

I'm all for electric cars, especially when they're compact, but those things are just plain ugly.
I don't suspect they'll sell very well.

Just a few years ago it would have seemed impossible to see so many promising looking EVs in the offing; however now we will be seeing extended range EVs as early as next year, with a 100 mile + range and a hundred mile + speed. The price tag also wont be as high as the 6 figure range, more like about 30 k.

108 THOUSAND dollars for this? Are you serious? The Aptera 1 is only 30,000 and it comes in hybrid and full electric models. Not to mention the fact that it gets 300 mpg on the highway. Now if you are traveling cross country you can go from new york to montana on a full tank of gas with the aptera 1. I know the trend is moving away from gas power, and I agree with this, but for practicality sake, 300 miles per gallon is not a bad start with the Aptera. Also, the aptera 1 is a LOT more technological than this thing appears to be. Have a god look at the inside of an aptera and then the inside of this and tell me which one sells you first. This car and other all electrics like it are overly priced gimmicks because I know damn well there are electric cars with a better range than this one, they are just not revealing them to the public yet for fears that electric cars with dominate the market.

The picture does NOT do justice to the Tango. I saw
the Tango at a Transportation Expo in Tri-Cites, WA
and talked with Rick Woodbury extensively. Yes, it
IS expensive because production so far is limited
to a handful or so, but just like the Tesla which
is also near USD$100K the cost will drop when the
quantity increases. Woodbury uses NO Government
funding and it is better than the National Labs
have produced so far for millions! Take a look at
http://www.commutercars.com/ to see the Tango.
This is the most solid vehicle outside a APV.
With the development of battery technology the
Tango will become even more of a commuter choice.
