iPhone gets ruined with an add-on physical keyboard

One of the biggest things keeping people from getting on board with the iPhone is its lack of a physical keyboard. If you're not used to typing on a touchscreen, it can be a difficult thing to get used to. So people who are used to their Sidekicks or Blackberry's might have a hard time making the switch.

Well, one enterprising modern has gone and "fixed" this problem by adding a physical keyboard to the iPhone. Sure, it ruins the elegant simplicity of the design, and it makes the whole thing bulky and awkward, but hey, a keyboard! Really, if you need a keyboard this badly, just stick with your Blackberry. Don't ruin an iPhone like this.

The addition of a physical keyboard is something I crave. This device, however, fails to make typing much more faster or accurate than the virtual keyboard because it still relies on the thumbs. For general use, I find the virtual keyboard to be pretty good once mastered.

A better solution for emails and notetaking is this Bluetooth number:

I used to own a Sharp Wizard OZ-770. The device wasn't much longer than an iPhone (probably shorter) but the keyboard on this thing was fantastic.

I was able to type (after a week or so) with two hands at a fairly good clip. The point here is that not all small keyboards need to be thumb-keyboards if it's engineered well (with enough spacing between keys).

The other issue with the keyboard shown on the video is that the monitor section (ie, the iPhone itself) of this setup makes this clamshell design top-heavy. This forces the user to always cradle the entire unit.

PS: Great link, CJW! Bookmarked.

Also liked the 'concept' iPhone laptop on a previous dvice article:

@Adam Frucci - there should be nothing wrong with expandability. Options like these aren't forced on anyone:-)

Why on earth would you ad on a bulky keyboard when you have the gorgeous and very functional on-screen keyboard already on your iPhone?
I have never written faster then I´m doing rigth now thanks to my iPhone keyboard :-) This is not only sms texting...
Why would you ever make iPhone bigger and more uncomftable when Apple has gotten this aspect of the divece just rigth?!

By Boborlarry at 10:01 AM ON 11/06/08

...And judging from your "rigth" "divece" skills, you just proved the point.

i disagree with "MacFabulous"

and let me say 'macs' suck, second of all its not that functional, and i've got small fingers for crying out loud, i press an "S" i get an "A" i don't move my finger anywhere and press down again THEN it turns into a "S", its like the iphone got it wrong the first time to p*ss me off

3rdly if i miss the physical feel when typing, and like typing on a keyboard for a computer if i make a mistake my fingers IMMEDIATELY know and can fix it. How would i know where my fingers are on the on-screen board if i fail the first time around?I type gibberish on my iphone.

So for "CRAPfabulous" to say he has never typed so fast before i think his either

a) retarded
b) works for apple
c) a total nerd who has done it so much his use to it

why should i get USE to it, i either can type well or i can't
