Exploding bike lock shows bike thieves who's boss
Bike theft in major cities is a big problem, with people afraid to leave their bikes locked up anywhere for fear of some thief coming along with wire cutters and whisking it away. And with biking a great, environmentally-friendly alternative to driving, we want more people to feel up to using their bikes more often. Enter the exploding bike lock.
The exploding bike lock is pretty self explanatory: it's a bike lock that blows up if you try to cut it instead of opening it properly. It works like anti-theft tags on clothes by spraying a permanent dye everywhere when it's cut, so the potential thief is covered and easily identified. Is it a perfect solution? No, but it's a clever step forward for bike security, so we'll take it.

Awww, you had me interested when you said 'exploding bike lock', but it turns out to be a dye-pack. I was hoping for potential bike thieves to wind up missing a kneecap or two.

@ Dave - That'd be very illegal and the bike thief would have a hay day suing you.

Yeah, isn't our justice system broken or what? I think an actual exploding bike lock that would take out the legs/kneecaps of a thief should be quite legal, and encouraged as long as built properly. If they're trying to steal it, they deserve a lot worse than our broken and corrupt justice system gives them. Perhaps next time they long sideways at that bike, they'll remember how they can barely walk now because an exploding bike lock took out their legs or kneecaps the last time they tried to steal. We really need more proper punishments in our judicial system.

so we're trying to be enviornmentally friendly by riding a bike, but the we explode chemical ink everywhere?
And another thing, wouldn't the ink go all over your bike?
Here's an idea, buy a bigger, better lock & use a thicker chain! Or leave it next to my sister! She's so fugly she'll scare anyone away!

So they could just use a bag to cover the lock and it would be like cutting any other lock? Think I will pass on this one.

what if you lost your keys and needed to cut the lock you would want it to shoot shrapnel at you then
By Bristle3 at 12:11 PM ON 11/08/08
or, how about when the bike thief tries to cut the chain it shoots thousands of volts of electricity at him that'll leave him writhing in pain until police arrive......much better idea, don't you think?

Having had about 20 bikes stolen in the course of my 44 years, I agree that we need stronger laws for this. I like the electrical zap idea. and as for losing the key. How about a combination lock.
