Toilets use a lot of water, you know. And it seems kind of strange to have a sink right next to your toilet, pouring all that water down the drain, when your toilet would work just as well with your second-hand sink water as it does with regular clean water. Why not save water by running your sink into your toilet?
This Dual Flush toilet takes that idea to the next level by actually putting a ink in the tank of the toilet. So you can brush your teeth while you pee, or wash your hands before flushing to use the same water for both. Sure, it's kind of an awkward place for a sink, but you want to save the environment, don't you?

I did a homestay in Japan in the late 80s and my host family had one of these. It's use was restricted to hand washing, though. Tooth brushing happened at a different sink.

Hooray! Now your bathroom can look just like the jail cell you spent the night in on your 21st birthday.

Is this really sanitary?

I have also stayed in Japan for a year and we had one of these types of toilets. It had this cool little adapter on the end of the spout which had a penguin that flapped its wings whenever the water ran through it. This is sanitary because the water that fills the toilet is the same that comes out of your normal sink.

We've had these for years in Australia, I am not sure about the sanitary aspect though.. the water at the top is fresh water indeed, but what about the faecal matter that floats around the bathroom/toilet when you're doin' yer biz! Ewww! Anyone watch that Mythbusters episode where they studied the distance faecal matter travels :-S
Just don't use this sink to drink out of!!
