Outlandish Sony PSP2 design flaunts flexible OLED screen

sony_psp2_front.jpg

Is it us, or isn't it a bit ironic that the same week Sony's newest Playstation Portable (PSP-3000) becomes available, a fantastic design for a future model bursts on the scene? While the PSP-3000 has scant few innovations, this design concept by Tai Chiem is dripping with luscious, yet nonexistent, tech. Check out that scrolling OLED screen, morphing the clunky design of today's PSP into a cylinder akin to a magic wand. Its speakers on each end double as controls, and an electrical charge holds the screen upright. Remarkable.

I'm holding last year's PSP here in my hand and wouldn't bother to upgrade to today's updated PSP-3000. But this PSP2, well, I'd snap one of these babies up in a heartbeat. Imagine if it had a phone built in, a super-crisp high-contrast OLED scrolling screen, Bluetooth capability and fast wireless connectivity.

It's vaporware today for sure, but methinks we could be gazing at the portable media and communications device of the future. My prediction: Three years from now, when it comes to hand-held talkies, we'll either be using gizmos like this — or given our current econo-predicament, maybe big noisy drums and smoke signals.

WOW that looks so awesome, and its not as far away as you may think, the technology involved is actually available now. Smart plastics can be mailable at one time then when electricity is passed through it is becomes very rigid, OLED is still in its infancy but look promising. The only think I would say is the ergonomic design is poorly thought up as it would be very uncomfortable in the users hand and speakers would be blocked during use. Never the less it looks the bees knees

woah this will be fun to play with seen as theres no X O SQUARE or TRIANGLE let alone R and L or R2 L2 if the psp2 get it, i hope they do give it a right anologe stick though

Get me one of thease. Where can I get one of these??????? bigfoot678@gmail.com

By Jackel676 at 1:13 PM ON 10/17/08

This design is asinine!

How are you supposed to play a PSP with analog sticks alone!?!?!

By CoolProducts at 1:47 PM ON 10/17/08

OLEP is the foundation for the future of media viewing capabilities. Imagine having your entire wall covered with this very thin HD fabric that eventually will be relatively inexpensive. OLED is going to revolutionize things.

By Shoyz at 3:06 PM ON 10/17/08

Before going "OMFG NO BUTTONS", can you at least look at what it -does- have?

It has two analog sticks, all the original setting buttons (from the bottom of the PSP-1000-3000), and a rectangle-shaped cluster of buttons (Which I assume are x,o,etc.) and the L and R button on the back side.

If I'm right about the rectangle, then it has every button from the original PSP.

By SnowyRiver at 3:12 AM ON 10/19/08

Huh. While I would have to agree that this looks cool, I think that there would have to be some consideration given to the ergonomics of how the user holds it and controls it. Even if it does have all of the same buttons, that doesn't mean that it is well designed, from a usability stand point.

Also, the illustrations are nice, but the reflections are wrong. It bugs me to look at these because the illustration shows the reflections at angles that don't match the apparent angle of the floor. So, it just looks wrong. Someone needs to review their freshman physics coursework on mirrors and reflections.

It's nice. Me? Still waiting for "Earth: Final Conflict" Global to be made a reality.

By Soothingmadness at 12:29 PM ON 10/19/08

Wow as amazing as that thing is I wouldn't buy one. The interface is non-existent, the thing looks like it would be to difficult to handle for playing games on unless in was touch screen which bring in issues like those face by the DS.

By craigm3604 at 9:27 PM ON 10/19/08

I second the "Earth: Final Conflict" Global statement.

That was the first thing I thought of when I saw the article.

By avaz at 4:06 PM ON 10/21/08

Wow, I love how people are already putting down the interface and the lack of buttons. What don't you people not understand about the term "CONCEPT". To the person that said he wouldn't buy one...I wouldn't buy one either but not because I don't want one, but because IT DOES NOT EXIST. They have not even completed a prototype yet, and I am sure when they do they will address all the issues of button placement and how it will be held. This is Sony, not some no name company that is trying to build a DVD player for the first time. Also the reflections in my opinion are interested because it allows you to see different angles of the unit when it is held upright. Apparently you never learned how to over-exaggerate reflections, to work for your benefit. Peace.

By permster at 4:07 AM ON 10/23/08

I agree, lets not put it down yet. Only a concept afterall. Who says it needs buttons anyway? OLED is capable of touchscreen so why can't it use software driven keys like an iPhone?

By shetreat610 at 5:25 PM ON 10/28/08

is there a release date yet? or a price?

By Kleptomaniac at 8:10 AM ON 10/29/08

"Is that a PSP2 in you're pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"
;)

By sertyaeyhseryh at 2:41 PM ON 10/31/08

this shit is off the hooooooooooooooooooooooooook!

By Bigbad at 9:48 PM ON 11/05/08

I have a question. Where did this info come from and is it a reliable source?

By lawmanBKLYN at 10:40 AM ON 11/07/08

I am gear up and waiting for this concept to come to pass and I wouldn't mind paying the price. Boys will have their toy's and some girl's does anyone wants to play.

By cd at 3:17 PM ON 11/18/08

send me one

By PFM at 4:10 PM ON 01/26/09

Of course, if you guys googled PSP2 then you'd have realized by now that there aren't actually any plans for a PSP2 within the next few years... It's all a hoax. Sony's big boss himself has said there's no plans for it at the moment.

By ace mccoy at 1:36 AM ON 04/02/09

the button set up looks horrible ! imagine holding it in your hands and try to touch those shoulder buttons that are on the back and center of the rod (make the rod flat and make the button layout better!) on a positive note at least it has 2 joysticks and the screen looks like a good size. I just hope they release enough games for it (look at how little amount of games we get for the current PSP)
