Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone debuts, falls short

nokia_tube22.jpg

Nokia scrambles to catch up to the iPhone with its Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone, also known as "the Tube." While its 3.2-inch haptic touch screen and 3.2-megapixel auto-focusing camera are impressive, our buddy John Biggs at CrunchGear was disappointed in its confusing, overcrowded menus and second-rate web browser.

At first glance, we like that stylus hanging off the thing, looking a lot like a guitar pick, and think the overall case design is pretty slick, yet derivative. It's rolling out in Europe first for $227 — expect to see it Stateside sometime next year. Nice try, Nokia, but we'll hang on to our iPhone 3G a while longer, at least until Android phones gear up.

@BudgetHero: John Biggs is a New York Times technology writer, editor of tech site CrunchGear, former editor of Gizmodo, and just signed a book contract for more than $300,000 to write about tech. His credibility about tech matters, and especially phones such as the Nokia 5800, is impeccable. His opinion actually matters. That's why you should give a damn.

That said, thanks for all your enthusiastic comments.

ok, ok, i'm sorry. i was wrong about John Biggs. i now know who he is, sort of. and i could see why one could trust his opinion.

but i stand my ground on the iphone thing. most of your cellphone reviews from a while back made a comparison to the iphone in some way. especially when dealing with touch screen phones. AND I juuuuust wonder why? why can't you review a cellphone on that cellphone alone? why constantly refer/compare to the iphone? i know a lot of people see the iphone as the pentacle of phone design. but "a lot of people" is not the same as everyone. some people have never used/don't want to use an iphone. therefore, they don't understand the comparison. "the screen is bigger then the iphone's" ok, i don't know how big the iphone screen is. and sometimes it sounds like you're demeaning some phones. sometimes, you sound like you think they stole the iphone concept by being a touch screen. if not, it *sounds* like it sometimes.

personally, i just want to read a review of a cell phone. not wait for the next iphone reference/comparison. every time i see the iphone mentioned in your cellphone reviews, i get aggravated cause i don't see the **need**. even if it is the best cell phone, to you, doesn't mean it is the standard that all other cell phones must be judged by, at least not every time by default. it's one thing to play favorites. it's another to jab the competition constantly with your favorite.
