Nissan unleashes real world R2-D2 style droids on humanity
With visions of Star Wars' R2-D2 clearly ringing in their heads, the lab wonks at Nissan have unveiled the Biomimetic Robot Car (BR23C). The robot is meant to demonstrate the car maker's new crash prevention technology being shown off at this week's CEATEC conference in Tokyo.
Based on the biological functions of the common bee, the Laser Range Finder sensor detects obstacles within a 180-degree radius and relays that information to the robot in order to avoid front side obstacles. This will be perfect when we begin to employ robo-chauffeurs en masse. Until then you can check out video of the robots in action here.

I wonder why the head needs to move. Seems to add a level of mechanical complication were something to go wrong - perhaps it's a way to make it more humanoid? I was expecting the robots to duel it out upon close encounter but alas, they just go around in circles - hopefully the cars they put these sensors in won't do the same - may see a traffic jam as cars start doing donuts mid rush hour...j/k

How about as a guide in a large office complexes. You could have the little robots be a combination guide and an electronic pass to allow someone through locked doors.

Can I drop it into the sun roof so it can be autopilot and perform navigation calculations?
