Manta-shaped aquatic robot either saves lives or causes heart attacks

Mantra-rescue-system-by-Adam-Scott.jpg
Looks like if Baywatch ever airs again, it'll be filled with less rippling bodies and more autonomous underwater rescue vehicles — AUVs that would look pretty darn scary circling around you in the water.

The Mantra is a concept by designer Adam Scott that's intended to help ease the burden of lifeguards and swiftly rescue anyone in distress out in the water. The Mantra has a flexible body that allows it to swim more naturally amidst underwater currents, with a detachable stretcher up top so that lifeguards can quickly unload the wounded off of the Mantra once it heads to the shore.

If you like this design, head over to another of Adam Scott's concepts — a fire extinguisher that looks a lot more like a laser rifle. Check out the gallery below for more of Scott's Mantra AUV.
