We finally get to see the Chevy Volt electric car

chevyvoltofficial_front.jpg

Finally, we get a full-on look at Chevy Volt electric car! You saw a sneak peek at its center console and a few spy shots, but now here's a clear look at (almost) the entire car. Weird, though — they still don't want us to see the whole thing, instead posing some of the GM execs responsible for the vehicle. Get out of the way, guys!

While it still looks OK, too bad GM stylists have taken away those radical angles from its original design. But then, if it was all in the name of aerodynamics, maybe its more-mainstream looks are a worthy compromise. No matter. We're still on board, but hoping GM can bring the 2011 model to market on time (2010) and under budget (now creeping up to $40K and beyond).

Once again, GM turdifies a beautiful concept design with a weirdly proportioned, bland production version and they wonder why they continue to lose market share.

It's about time American auto maker(s) (GMC) woke up and smelled the electricity!

Aeordynamics dictate a good deal of what they can do. Lutz himself cracked about the show car's wind drag that they could probably have gotten better results putting it into the wind tunnel backwards. Too bad, since it's a nice looking rig, but embracing that inefficient big-nose/gun-slot window look is part of what has Chrysler sucking wind today.

By carnut2 at 5:10 PM ON 09/09/08

I'm disappointed that the car has the nose of a Chevy truck... C'MON DETROIT!!! Can't you guys turn out anything which doesn't look like a redo of a G6? You'd think we could get a lower cowel and beltline, thinner B and C pillars and a less massive, heavy handed design... Sheesh!

By MrBong at 5:15 PM ON 09/09/08

Funny, to me, it looks like the new Hondas with a bowtie front grill.
Either way, real original guys.
^^that was sarcasm^^

It's a nice looking car. The comments to the contrary seem prejudiced (i.e. seem to be coming from people who don't have a lot of respect or admiration for GM and see these photos through their own preconception filter of the General's competence design and engineering)
Once again, nice car. It certainly looks better than a Prius.

By murc at 5:31 PM ON 09/09/08

is that black part on the back glass???

if so, ya might as well call it he Chevy Prius.

never the less, its not to bad looking.

GM, now just use this tech in the new camaro and I will have to take out a loan to get that badass muthafucka.

Borrrrring! Well there goes any chance of my buying a Volt. I was looking for a sports car twist on electric. Now they've gone the homely point A to B people mover. Yawn. Way to follow guys. You were ahead of the curve and now you're just sheep - like a bad version of Hyundai.

By Wayno at 6:17 AM ON 09/10/08

A better title for this would be. "We finally get to see a bunch of GM turd head p(l)osers (HEY, LOOK AT ME!!) blocking our view of the new Volt"

By TheOriginalGiga at 10:32 AM ON 09/10/08

*sigh* They ruined yet another great looking concept car. Yes I know that it didn't go well with aerodynamics, but they could have remedied that and kept a body style similar to the concept. and with a price tag nearly double that of the initial thought it was going to be, I'd rather go buy a Civic hybrid for almost half the cost, and I hate Honda. Good going GM, stick to your trucks (not like those are much better)

By Nevets at 12:52 PM ON 09/10/08

This world does not need another ugly pregnant roller skate like the Prius. GM can make a nice looking vehicle so why did they fail here?

By eman2022 at 1:33 PM ON 09/10/08

Wow forget that...The concept was WAY better looking and i had even saved up a good chunk to get it. But this redesign has turned me off 100% talk about UGLY, we are going back to the 80's it seems where all the cars look alike. Not for me.

I'm sitting in a traffic jam in Toronto, it's 8 am. I'm wondering to myself...why is every car around me sitting there going no where...why is there only 1 person in each car...where are the mass people movers? Why are we all hooked on CARS? They are just steel wagons without horses...
GAWD people...mass transit ... forget
the car...
Give us computer contolled people movers...
ring rail roads, and radial systems...
maglev...etc.

Anyone see the movie, "Who killed the electric car?" So, will we be able to actually own this thing or just lease it like the EV1? Will all of the volts end up as so much scrap metal? I think plug in hybrids sound like the perfect solution. I don't want to give up my road trips to Vegas just becasue my car is going to run out of juice by the time I get to Palmdale (60 miles from here).

By fuedo20 at 1:34 PM ON 09/14/08

BUDDIES, ECAR IS A BAD CHOICE !! This option will not help the environment with carbon emissions all all. On the contrary, it'll make CO2 emissions even worst since a big chunk of the electricity sources is the burning of coal, and for those who dont know this has a 33% efficiency.

Are those the same handsome executives who got big bonuses for laying off American workers and cutting their benefits?

By warrior at 11:48 PM ON 09/16/08

what a disappointment seeing the final Volt design ! I was all geared up to buy the edgy concept version, but not this bland Honda clone ! I'll wait for an electric that has the looks that GM promised us in the beginning.

By BlazzieBlaz at 7:59 AM ON 10/29/08

So they come up with the car that everybody wants. Set it at a price that somebody might actually be able to afford...

Then they change it and double the price...

No wonder GM is going under. I don't want my tax dollars going to bail them out if this is the crap they are going to pull.
Let them fail... maybe then the car companies will get it through their heads that everything they make is outrageously overpriced
