Trans-Pacific rowboat bristles with $80K worth of tech

pacific_rowboat.jpg

Can you imagine solo rowing all the way across the Pacific Ocean? Take a look at Roz Savage, not exactly rowing her boat gently down the stream — she's on her way across the world's largest ocean as you read this. Her boat is stuffed with $80,000 worth of electronics, allowing her to blog and podcast along the route from San Francisco to Australia.

On her extensive equipment list are two computers (one Panasonic ToughBook as her primary machine and a MacBook running Windows XP in Boot Camp), a couple of satellite phones, lots of GPS gear, three iPods, a couple of digital SLRs, and complete video shooting and editing facilities. She even has a Davis Vantage Pro2 weather station just like the one we have here at the Midwest Test Facility.

We're just wondering how somebody could row all day, every day, for three years! She'll tackle the 7600-mile voyage in three stages, a follow-up to her 2007 Atlantic crossing, where she was the only solo female competitor in the 3000-mile Atlantic Rowing Race. We're just hoping that enclosed rear section of the boat is comfortable enough, but are not at all tempted to pick up one of these rowboats used for $50K. Bon voyage, Roz.
