SanDisk debuts biggest CompactFlash card ever

32GB-SanDisk-Extreme-III-CompactFlash.jpg
SanDisk's new 32GB SanDisk Extreme III CompactFlash card hopes to draw folks such as serious video professionals, who often have to store and access large, raw files. At 32 GB, it has almost as much storage as plenty of low-end laptops packed into a card the size of a wafer. The card can hold up to 80 minutes of HD video, and has access speeds of 30 MB/s — that means you could pull the entire 32 GB off of the card in under 20 minutes under optimal conditions.

Look for the 32GB SanDisk Extreme III CompactFlash card in October for $300.

This sounds very cool! I will admit my ignorance and ask a question of those more knowledgeable in the area:
Q: If the cost could be brought down, could something like this replace DVDs?

By IsoTek at 4:24 PM ON 09/11/08

@Dragonhung...Yes, these could replace DVDs if the cost were comparable. Eventually Solid State memories such as these will replace DVDs and Hard Drives. We now have larger versions of these memories that have been made into Solid State Hard Drives. They range in size of 20gb to 100gb, maybe more but they are very pricey though. Currently the military has purchased them for memory storage in battlefield electronic devices.

I think that it is horrible idea. Just think of the cost, or it and HOW easy these cards are to miss place or lose. I personally never buy one over 4 GB just because and the idea of losing it.

Theoretically these could NOT replace DVDs, as DVDs are good for an unlimited number of uses. Whereas flash memory can only be cycled a limited number of times before the transistors begin to break down and fail to switch.

I already have a 32gb compact flash card from Adata in my PDA, they have been out for months, it works great

@ TMAN

that's exactly why they will replace dvd's. just think. you watch a movie 10 times, and then it deteriorates. thus, you need to buy another one. the companies who make movies will be all over it.. just to make more money. and if it gets pushed enough, they stop making dvd's and you have no choice but to buy them. but $300 for 32GB... i can buy 1 TB for that... :/
