Odd 56-story skyscraper reminds us too much of Jenga for comfort

56-Leonard-Street-Herzog-de-Meuron.jpg
56 Leonard Street is a new skyscraper going up in New York City designed by Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron. Situated in posh Tribeca, the tower cuts an odd silhouette with its jagged edges and apartments that seem to jut out at all angles. Don't you feel like you could just poke your finger against one and knock it through? As another artsy touch, it's seemingly supported by a silver blob-of-a-sculpture tucked under one of its corners (as seen in the first picture of the gallery below).

The tower will stand 56 stories tall, house 145 residential units featuring apartments and luxury penthouses (ranging from a whopping $3.5 million to whoppier $33 million), and construction should be complete in 2010. Check out the gallery below for more of 56 Leonard Street.

$33 Million wow!

By BrokeAmerican at 6:38 PM ON 09/15/08

Just what we need in this current American economy ... $33,000,000 apartments. I guess the rich do get richer and the poor just keep getting poorer.

Ok, ummm, where are the walls? Glass walls? What's the word for it, oh yeah, STUPID!

By Taynna at 4:02 AM ON 09/21/08

That's impressively ugly. I'd be so pissed if someone built this monstrosity in my neighborhood. My sympathies to those who live nearby.

Destroying the New York skyline one fugly building at a time... shakes his head in disgust.

what's inside the silver blob??

By arty at 5:36 PM ON 09/21/08

Why the two pictures of day and night the same, if you look you see two people on one balcony and one person below in the exact same spot. arty

Why ugly, Taynna? Just because not complying your rigid sense of straightness?

By Remelox at 11:26 AM ON 09/22/08

I think Taynna is saying it's ugly because it is ugly. It has nothing to do with it not being "normal". It's just ugly. If this think was in Tokyo, Godzilla would take it out as a favor to the people around it.

How much of my condo is consumed by the elevator/stairwell core? And who will wash the windows?

By GPB at 9:18 PM ON 06/23/09

Modern architecture isnt suppose to be "pretty" or "ugly" Its suppose to be interesting and catch the eye with its unique complextion of the scructure.
