Navy's 'Batman' boat can take on all comers

batmanboat.jpgThe Navy has a new boat in its arsenal, and it's not afraid of drug runners or pirates. The new boat, called the Stiletto and dubbed the Batman Boat by enthusiasts, is an 80-foot, 60-ton, $6 million experimental ship that can tool around in extremely shallow waters at up to 60 knots. How well does it work? Listen to this badass story:

In the early days of August, a suspected drug-running boat zoomed through the Straits of Florida, trying to outrun her American pursuers. The drug boat zigged and zagged near reefs and sandbars at 42 knots, and skimmed over water as little as five feet deep. Ordinarily, that would have been enough shake off any Coast Guard cutter or Navy frigate chasing her -- those vessels can't be in such shallow water. But this pursuer kept coming, and coming. Finally, after two hours, the drug boat ran out of gas. During their interrogations, the drug-running suspects said it was like being chased by a UFO.
Seriously, how sweet is that? Look out, drug runners: the Batman Boat is out there, and it'll get you in the darkest of nights.

When the government controls our lives, it will be technology like this that makes change impossible.

Oh man, the irony. The drug war isn't really a war at all (since enemy deaths are avoided at all costs), and the same goes for Batman, never killing anyone.

If it were a real war, and the Stiletto actually lived up to its name, that drug boat would have been skewered and brought to a halt in less than 5 minutes, not TWO HOURS.

Another murder machine for the American Empire.

TRAVELER, your an idiot. Empires conquer countries...we don't. Once Iraq has stabilized and the Iraqi forces have proofed that they cant take the helm, we will gladly hand her over.

Islamic terrorists is the number one threat to the world right now....and unfortunately, far to many countries are doing nothing about it...well, America is.

as or this good lookin ship...before you go on spouting about how its gonna kill people...might want to take a look at it...it has NO guns or missiles or torpedoes. The only way this boat is going to kill someone is if it sinks, or runs over a small row boat.

'Cept batman didn't really go after drug runners as far as I remember, he only went after murderers and rapists and such. Gotham PD was too busy w/ pot busts to notice the psychopaths they had popping up every other day.

And this is a neat boat, yeah, for looks if not anything else. It is mobile and all, but not really a great new threat to drug runners; if they cared to resist, it doesn't have any special armor or anything like that. It's not really meant to be shot at, and from what I could tell from what i've read about it before it's not really meant for chasing drug runners. It's meant to be a staging platform for spec ops (has this neat dealie where you load up all the mission equipment in a series of cargo crates, instead of it all being built in). If these drug runners had cared to they probably could have lacerated the crew with something as small as a .50

Good thing those horrible drug dealers don't ever seem to want to start trouble. Damn dirty bastards just want to go about their business and make money by supplying luxury goods, those damn dirty capitalist...

Wait, isn't America a capitalist nation? Why are we chasing drug runners, again, when there are plenty of actual criminals running free?

By JR at 9:50 PM ON 09/20/08

Actual criminals... like poisoning murderers... oh wait, those are drug runners. My bad.

I love how everyone who looks at this site is an expert on everything, make me feel good to be around such "intelligent" individuals, you know, since reading an article on the internet makes you qualified to give definative commentary on anything

In response to LOL, allow me to ask you this. Why don't you see drug runners as criminals? A statement like that tells us you are a user, a dealer, or both. Am I right? Truth hurts doesn't it.
For the rest of us, newer tech by any variety helps prevent drugs from hitting the streets. If your not concerned, think about this; an illicit drug user takes a drug and gets into a car. Just like a drunk driver, he or she could kill your wife and kids.
Don't have a wife or kid, consider this for your next hospital visit. The user is more prone to suffer illnesses resulting in hospital stays. Most get admitted without the means to pay the bill and hospitals can't legally turn them away. Now with that said, who pays their bills?
I conclude with this, it makes me mad as hell to know I have to protect against the user who could care less. To know that the user is the one getting a free ride from my wallet. I fully support paying for "BAT boats", the means of protecting my family. At the same time, I get to keep my money at my next hospital visit.

@madassalg

The only good change is the change from a society that cares about 'rebelliousness' and being 'different' to a society that makes progress by common assent. A government should have total control, and should be organized by artificial intelligence or a visionary or someone else who cannot fall prey to greed and pride (and only a right-brained sub-human would say that EVERYONE is). I don't care how much touchy-feely media cries out against it, the way forward is one that must be forged with the iron fist, regardless of a few insignificant lives lost along the way.

Better yet, we should operate in a hive mind. Biochemistry research is predicted to make this link-up possible by 2024. Individuality breeds only contention and stagnation. We won't have to put up with that much longer, though. Look ahead to the glorious dawn, my brothers.
