HP packages laptop in its own bag, reduces shipping materials by 97%

HP-Box-Free-Laptop.jpgWhen you buy a new computer, it always comes wrapped up in a box full of Styrofoam and all sorts of other packing materials, all of which you promptly toss in the garbage. What a waste. In a brilliant move, HP is selling its new Pavilion dv692 laptop in its own beautiful, recycled material laptop bag.

The only packing material in the bag with the laptop are some air bubbles. By ditching the cardboard and Styrofoam, HP has reduced its packing materials by a whopping 97%. This particular system is being sold at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club, but we're hoping that HP will start selling more of their laptops like this and other companies take notice. It doesn't get much smarter than this.

Apple needs something like that!

All products need something like that! It's sad (and good knowledge) that a company needs a push to challenge itself in figuring out that one does not need all that foam and box and plastic and zip-ties to get said item to the customer. And in fact - save money from shipping to delivery - passing on savings and lessening impact. It's not just "being green" - it's also a sound business decision.

I just unboxed and distributed 133 laptops last week. HUNDREDS of pounds of waste packing material.

However, if even one of the machines were damaged, dented or scratched, it would be a DOA, and replaced. I cannot distribute damaged hardware as new. Especially at 2 or 3 thousand dollars per unit. I wouldn't want to risk almost half a million dollars in inventory to little cloth bags during shipping.

Buying a bagged computer in Sam's Club, and putting it in your car for the trip home is one thing.

Shipping the computer on a wrapped palette from it's chinese factory is another, and a lot of that packaging material takes damage for the team, instead of the actual hardware taking that damage.

recycleable, biodegradeable, fine. But it had better do it's job to protect the expensive stuff inside.

Unfortunately for those trying to be green, BoxerFanatic has a good point. It's not a feasible solution for every single case.

But that being said, I love the bag and I would be delighted to get a laptop that came in such attractiva packaging.

I also agree with boxerfanatic - I've ordered thousands of dollars of merchandise from Newegg.com and through no fault of their own, I generally end up with at least 1 item that was damaged in delivery.. and that's with large boxes with packing pellets and such. I applaud HP for their efforts but slap them with a stupid stick for not thinking of the components inside. Wait, they use crappy components anyways? does it matter then? DON'T BUY HP! Build your own or shop wisely.

I have to agree with boxerfanatic too. I'd bet that these Pavilions were shipped to the retailer with a lot more packing than what's being sold.

But if the retailers can dispose of the packaging responsibly instead of leaving that job to the customer then maybe this makes sense.

I agree with boxerfanatic too...shipping them to the stores is totally different from bringing them from a store to your house... :S (maybe hp doesnt send them to the stores in the bags, but in boxes...lol)

in any case, BRMWK, how did you build your own laptop?!?!? :S

By Technetium at 8:56 PM ON 09/16/08

robi5: Very carefully, I'd imagine.

I like the idea here, but I'd also be concerned about it being damaged in shipping. I used to work at a computer store and I've seen more than one person accidentally drop a boxed laptop before.

I am glad to see that large companies love the earth too :)

But the bag is cool. Good idea.

By Dread at 11:38 AM ON 10/21/08

lol, I dunno, if it's cushioned extensively, I might give it a chance, but it seems unlikely that it's better than all that other stuff. Just another gimmick really to get Earth conscious people to buy their laptop over another ones.

And on the comment of building your own laptop: there are ways, just search for it on Google and you'll find something, but there isn't really a market for it, so you're better off buying one than building it at this point in time.
