30 stunning images of the Large Hadron Collider

CERN-LHC-Alice-inner-tracker.jpg

Since the Large Hadron Collider didn't destroy the world this morning, isn't it high time we forgive and forget? And what better way than with a meaty gallery of industrial goodness from all stages of its development, cataloging the effort to build the largest particle accelerator in the world. Of course, today's test was simply to see if the LHC's beam would successfully navigate its almost-17-mile ring. Collisions come later.

C'mon, don't think about that. Look, just gaze at that red, glowing detector above. It's even kind of cute, right? Like HAL 9000 cute. Oh…

Ahem, without further ado, feast your eyes on the gallery below and learn to love again. When you're done, browse our feature on the 10 ways the Large Hadron Collider will blow your mind.

I'm afraid I'm going to create a black hole, Dave.

By gauri at 5:32 AM ON 09/10/08

They are not going to create a black hole, they are helping the next generation.

By Ravi at 5:36 AM ON 09/10/08

Is this a target towards development

By Somebody~~ at 5:42 AM ON 09/10/08

why would they risk everyone's live for this silly experiment I would protest but im in the other side of the world!!!!

Screw this experiment!!!
you dont need to remake big bang!!!!!!!!
GEEZ!!!!!!!!!!

By ravi at 5:45 AM ON 09/10/08

Such experiment may also lead the generation towards dark or otherwise! unlike experiments for future developments...

By Reaper at 5:49 AM ON 09/10/08

I'm affraid we're all fucked, dave...

By ravi at 5:53 AM ON 09/10/08

WHAT ABOUT IF.........DAVV?

By dickson at 6:20 AM ON 09/10/08

All these experiments will NEVER lead to the most wonderful "mystries" God created. Only the creator would know how the earth and the universe is made. the human mind has limitations. but God's wisdom is eternal. There are so many things undiscovered within our earth, the sea and the atmosphere. The scientist should spend money on finding that rather than wasting money and resources for something stupid as this. This money could have been utilised for saving the Antartica's melting ice...or fight global warming.

By hater at 6:29 AM ON 09/10/08

why do ya need to mess around with the world n that it was made not to be temperd with and your all just fucking it up so why tell me why we got more problems than stupid stuff like this god do some thing thats helpin the oznoe what ever it is get ride of the hole n this aint guna change or prov any think !!!!!!!! god ....................

By die at 6:29 AM ON 09/10/08

lol god does not exist, he did not create any of what we live in today. if all goes well technology should get amazing, so much more would be understood! but if not, fair well.

I do not understand why the religious are up in arms against this thing. If anything, it validates the Genesis story (the Big Bang theory was originally proposed by a Roman Catholic priest who was also a physicist).

LHC iz so wonderful dat my mouth is left open 4rm when it's started.

By JustLooking at 7:36 AM ON 09/10/08

hmmm. Guys if you are not aware, it will take (according to one report) up to 30 days to get the Collider tuned to achieve the energies needed for the this experiment. Anytime through out the expected lifetime of this collider, "mini" blackholes or singularities can and WILL form. However statistically they will be unstable and quickly disappear, with little or no permanent effect. Skeptical as I am that a permanent one will form, read the argument before you trash it. If one should stabilize it could take months or maybe even years before anyone would really notice the gravitationaly effects (in which case it would be too late - but I guess we would then have to relocate). As for these kind of collisions occuring in nature, they are actually rare. If they were not so rare we would not need to build this collider.

By monkey at 7:39 AM ON 09/10/08

WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE! Shut this machine down instantly and sell it to Alton Towers to make the worlds largest amusement ride! =)#

On a serious note, this experience is awesome and will help advance our understanding of world no end. Why people get all negative and 'predect' dire consequences is beyond me.

By the Ramen Noodle at 8:08 AM ON 09/10/08

I do not understand why the religious are up in arms against this thing. If anything, it validates the Genesis story (the Big Bang theory was originally proposed by a Roman Catholic priest who was also a physicist).

1. 'Big bang theory' is contrary to the historical record in Genesis—the timescale and order of events are completely different! To say they are the same is plain ignorance.

2. Any true Christian should not be concerned about this experiment as it will no doubt reveal more to us about the world God created, albeit now marred by a 6,000-year-old curse because of sin. True operational science confirms the Bible's history is true.

But stepping down from my soapbox, I'd just like to know if we'll get any HDR photos of the particle collision. :)

By Laura at 8:14 AM ON 09/10/08

wow this is gonna be amazing. so scientific, so complicated, haha and so over the top - why cant everyone just leave science alone? oh well... its all good, i suppose. go CERN

By Aniruddha at 8:38 AM ON 09/10/08

Hey Guys,

What I was reading about was a scientific experiment, an element of human curiosity backed up by intelligence and information to form a base of knowledge in a field we have never gone. What I did expect, from the comments WAS a lot of support (at least moral if not material) to the scientists who have devoted a lot of things for the project to find things unknown to us.

And here it goes:

"religion.. christinity.. god (g small).. silly experiment"

I do not know why these guys are boosting the Devil (D capital) of darkness!

Wake up... Open your eyes... Open Your Minds..

When was the people of the world given the opportunity to vote for such controversial experimentation with our existence and lives.

I didn't see on my birth certificate a clause that stated that the world powers will conduct dangerous world existence experiments that can end my life at anytime deemed fit to a particular program.

Fear: God will kill you all!
Wonder: What hath God/Man/The Scientists wrought?
Respect: Wish I coulda been on that team...

I suspect the response tells us more about the responder than than the event.

Every invention has 2 sides... Good & Bad.

Just like… "Invention of Atom Bomb" one day, will destroy “All the inventions”
Some of the crazy scientists have already pushed this planet to its final episode.

Now its up to our scientists, where they drive this Planet to .... CONSTRUCTION or DESTRUCTION.

All the best… !!!

By Woody at 1:06 PM ON 09/10/08

Think of all the great unknowns of the past that are now common place… They used to say that the world was flat, most everyone believed that one or man wasn’t supposed to go faster then 35 mph and if he did, his eyes would fall out, today we drive faster then that on bicycles. Another was that the speed of sound could not be broken, that it was an invisible wall in the sky that would break apart any traveling airborne object. Scientist were fearful that spaceflight might be impossible, that weightlessness would cause a persons eyes to fall out or they would be unable to swallow or breath correctly and die… we now know these were just fears of the unknown. Paranoia and imaginations run amuck. Although this LHC is the work of science, just look at it, it looks more like a thing of science fiction. What great times we live in. It makes me want to go back to school and learn Quantum Mechanics.

By LostShootingstar at 1:09 PM ON 09/10/08

Wow, there is a lot of ignorance in this comment thread. Half the people who are criticizing this experiment can't even seem to craft and a coherent sentence, never mind do research on what is actually going to take place at CERN. And im not talking about langauge barrier here, i'm talkin bout da ppl who be talk like dis an be like, "OMG god is l33t!, lol"

The world is not going to be destroyed by CERN, stop listening to every stupid thing you hear. The experiments at CERN are all unbelievably important to our scientific advancement as a species, and im proud to have lived in a time where we were able to construct such a complex machine.

By ziggy32 at 1:10 PM ON 09/10/08

EVERYONE STOP. YOU PEOPLE ARE REDICULOUS. YES, I'M YELLING.

THIS HAS NO RELIGIOUS IMPLICATIONS. THIS THING IS LIKE A HUGE MICROSCOPE. THE CONDITIONS CREATED BY THE COLLISION WILL FOR A FEW BILLIONTHS OF A SECOND. THE RUMORS ABOUT THE LIKELIHOOD OF A BLACK HOLE ARE NO MORE REAL THAN EVERYONE'S FEAR THE WORLD WAS GOING TO END IN THE YEAR 2000.

THIS IS SCIENCE. THE STUDY OF WHAT WAS,IS AND WILL BE. THE PEOPLE WHO DEVOTE THEIR LIVES TO THIS ARE NOT TRYING TO KILL US. THEY'RE TRYING TO DISCOVER THE ANSWER TO EXISITENCE OF EVERYTHING PAST THE INSTANT OF THE BIG BANG. THEY WANT TO KNOW WHAT FORMED THE LAWS OF PHYSICS, WHAT CREATED MATTER, AND WHY MATTER EXISTS WHEN ANTI-MATTER SHOULD HAVE CANCELLED IT ALL OUT IN AN INSTANT. THE VERY SAME INSTANT THEY'RE TRYING TO RECREATE ON AN UNIMAGINIBLY SMALL SCALE.

THE BIGGEST THING THAT WILL COME FROM THIS WILL HUGE COVER STORIES ABOUT THEIR DISCOVERIES, AND MAY EVEN LEAD TO NEW SCIENCE.

STOP THE FEAR MONGERING. THE END.

By Stephy at 1:33 PM ON 09/10/08

I think this is amazing and I've been excited all day. The only reason the religious are getting antsy is because this could very well prove that god does not exsist! To which I say 'Woo!'.

It's because of you religious idiots that kept us in the dark ages for so long. Science is the only thing that develops and progresses the human race.

Science is fascinating and should be respected. Also it's fun. Much more fun than your religious rubbish. I can't wait for personal fabricators!!

By Lionfish at 1:47 PM ON 09/10/08

By pheer6224 at 1:54 PM ON 09/10/08

This is stupid. Either thins thin obliderates us all or is a huge scientific advance. It's something, or we're nothing. There's no problem with that.

By Scy at 2:02 PM ON 09/10/08

After reading some of these comments I am amazed we ever made it out of the caves. The human race . . . preeningly ignorant and proud of it.

By jathema at 2:05 PM ON 09/10/08

This experiment is clearly two countries poor excuse for a NASA program. Billions of dollars later and a catastrophic explosion last year in one of the tunnels (due to minor engineering errors) we have ourselves a ticking time bomb. At least NASA does not risk our existence with their rockets. Ps the Hawkings theory is what the CERN people are using to quell the safety concerns about black holes (which will be created). Let me remind you Hawkings Theory has never been tested before

By collider at 2:35 PM ON 09/10/08

By BANG! at 2:46 PM ON 09/10/08

What are the religious people so afraid of? Will this thing prove that some things never existed?

By usefulidiot227 at 3:02 PM ON 09/10/08

Most people that are afraid of this machine clearly have no understanding of what's going on with it. I'm not even going to touch on the religious fanatics here, because they complain about everything and are the sole reason for the lack of evolution in humans.
There are bunches of particle accelerators in the world. Before this one was built, the biggest one was here in the US. It has nothing to do with NASA. This is solely just for physics, not for space exploration. This is not two countries feeble attempt at a NASA program. Again, it is not a space program, and, despite the fact that the accelerator straddles the French and Swiss border, it is being run by physicist from many different countries. Plus, the information that is gained from this experiment will be available to all countries involved (including the US) so that they can all work as a team to decipher the results. That's right, as a TEAM. Countries that you wouldn't expect to be together because of politics are working hand and hand with each other for the potential betterment of our understanding of physics and the natural universe. It's funny that some people on here are too "proud" to embrace the cooperation of multiple countries for the GOOD of the race.
As far as the miniature black holes are concerned, you should have a basic understanding on what it takes to form a black hole before you comment on how epically scary it is. The method they are using to potentially create extremely miniature black holes (which is not the direct goal of this project right now, but it could be in the future depending on how things go) should be of no concern except to the media that want to scare everybody. Billions of high energy photons pass through the Earth every single day, every single minute. The energy at which they pass through the Earth can, and probably does create these miniature black holes in our atmosphere all the time. The black holes will be so minute in mass that their life (which is directly proportional to their mass) will be so short (literally nanoseconds) that even if they wanted to, the black holes couldn't even "suck in" anything around it.
This could be the single most amazing experiment of this decade, if not this century. The information we can gain from this experiment (if it works) could finally close the gap between the two major theories of physics (relativity and quantum mechanics). The amount of information that we can gain from that alone will push our technology so far ahead of what it is now.
And we should not stop all technological advances because of the bad things it could potentially be used for. We would get no where with that ideology. I invite all of you who are feeling unsure or confused about what they are doing to just simply Google the LHC. I believe Discovery (as in the Discovery Channel) News and BBC had some good articles about it too.

A little longer to wait before the dimensional door is ripped off of it's hinges and I grow tentacles finally. Sorry, couldn't resist the obligatory Cthulhu reference. This is simply an amazing time to be alive. I look forward to reading the results of the collisions once released. The potential for human growth makes me smile. The pictures are fantastic.

As, while carrying-out any experiment, any exploration, we need to be more and more precise as we progress ahead so as to get our desired motive similarly we need to precise upon maintaining our overall guideline-principles of life. So that we don’t get carried-away frantically upon getting the “overwhelming success” other-wise……

There is no such thing as the "Big bang" God created the Universe with everything on it! If there was a "Big Bang" He is probably the one who cause it, to creat us!And Scientist should'nt go looking for stuff which aren't suppose to be found!

By MrDeadman at 12:08 AM ON 09/11/08

Oh yes, science is evil. Lets all sit in our grass huts and grunt at each other and live to 35. Religous nuts are so ignorant and hypocritical.

"I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use."
Galileo Galilei

By ..... at 12:41 AM ON 09/11/08

Guys, why do people have to hate science and god at the same time... ugh they never can work together... i think that science is proving something though... this may prove something but evolution??? that's a group of scientists who don't know what to say to people when they ask where humans came from and then they go and make stuff up. that way they "look" smart...

By usefulidiot227 at 12:42 AM ON 09/11/08

MR. Deadman,
That Galileo quote is one of my favorites. And what an appropriate time to use it.

Anom. poster, it's hard to argue with someone whose only source of information is a book of nursery rhymes. Instead of using your bible as a crutch to make you feel warm and cozy when you don't understand something, why don't you put it down (you can still keep it in sight) and pick up a different book or two (in this case, a general physics book should suffice). Religious nuts like you feel that science is going too far because they are searching for things that you do not understand. The fact that you don't understand certain things is probably the reason that you follow a religion. It may only be in the back of your mind, and you may never even think about it, but fear of the unknown is what keeps you in your religion. Fear of the unknown is the reason religion was created. At least it's a little better now a days because churches don't rule the countries (well at least as not as much as they used to), more powerful than the kings. If they did, I'm sure every member of CERN would have been executed or at least persecuted...just like Galileo. It is obvious that as a human, you have no intent of evolving (whether intellectually or otherwise), so you'd probably be happier just turning your computer and TV off and just reading your bible over and over and over. Cause, well, that's what god would want. Please stop slowing everyone else down because you're not ready to change.

By Frank at 1:51 AM ON 09/11/08

The LHC didn't "destroy the world" today because they injected beams of protons that travel in only one direction. The whole point of the machine is to run protons into each other, which would require some protons to be going the opposite way too. This is what the idiots are actually worried about, which won't happen for weeks from now. If anyone would actually READ anything about what is going on instead of blindly accepting stupid blog write-ups, they'd at least be worrying about the end of the world in a few weeks, not today.

It's akin to saying that you've built up a Formula One race car and you've added fuel and took a successful slow lap, and people keep asking how well it did in the Indy 500. I'm surrounded by fucking idiots.

By smeagollette at 2:52 AM ON 09/11/08

For all you religious zealots: if you truly had faith, you would have no fear... I see more faith in the scientists that produced this impressive machine than in any of these doomsday comments! What are you afraid of?

The Galileo quote: excellent!

With regard to this photo gallery and the link to the explanatory article: great images! Brief but informative, glad to have the latest technologies showcased so well! Looking forward to the results articles later!! WooHoo!!! (String theory? Unified theory? Black Holes and the Big Bang? In my lifetime? YEAH, BABY!!!)

It would have been nice to know they're powering the system with "green" resources... since it wasn't mentioned, it's difficult to speculate. I can only hope they took our environment into consideration. (I'm not worried about the particles, I studied them in college. On that note, wish I'd been a part of the team!)

By thor79 at 3:50 AM ON 09/11/08

Wow...cool photos...

...oh were you guys discussing something?

People who actually have a grasp around the basics of particle physics are not worried about this destroying the Earth Now or in October...or Next Year or 30 years from now. People who don't know crap about it are yelling "THE END IS NEAR" or ranting about it's religious implications. Guess who I'm paying attention to.

Waaaaahhh waaahhh, i cant believe that you bothered to come here and post if you really didnt care that much.

i think the majority of us are interested

By MacImagery at 5:27 AM ON 09/11/08

It is sad to me that so many people feel that their way is the only way, on both sides of this immensely ignorant and wasteful argument known as "God vs. Science".

Apparently, there are plenty of ignorant zealots on both sides.

From my own experiences/educations I believe this:

I am able to be typing/posting this now because of the benefits of science, but it is God that has helped me to stay alive to type and think about what I am writing (because, by all rights, I should have died years ago).

It is interesting that Galileo, in his quote (???), wasn't refuting the existence of God, but was saying essentially the same thing. Galileo believed in God, and furthermore believed that God (who is neither male or female) gave us the power to do the wondrous things we do.

You should take the time to become educated, on all of these issues, before declaring with such certainty that things are one way or the other.

Does God exist?

Will this device end the world?

Become educated before deciding, and before posting comments that clearly undermines the amazing possibilities that all of you clearly have.

By Dr Nick Ashley at 8:48 AM ON 09/11/08

The proton streams will not be colliding until October, after the LHC is properly calibrated and the detectors tested. 100 of the best quantum physicists have said there is no danger, and they are correct. Even if a quantum black hole formed it would evaporate. Black holes radiate Hawking radiation and so quantum black holes cease to exist after just nanoseconds.

This experiment will help us understand how the universe evolved from just after the big bang.

I've never read such a load of meaningless drivel as posted by over half the posters on this thread.

This thing is a sci-fi nerds wet dream, even so despite its capabilities its architecture is amazing. I mean these images are just stunning in form and balance. Don't get me wrong i think what there doing is awesome and they should do it. Need to know more before we can get off this dying rock.
Let all the religious zealots, the close-minded, and the ignorant choke on their narrow vies, spew regurgitated rumors, follow the status quo instead of formulate their own opinion through research.
If scientist were to follow the popular view of society we'd still be living in shacks with idolized words to protect us.

By dave at 8:56 AM ON 09/11/08

Micro Black Holes,Quantum Singularites and God have all been discussed for this supercollider. Has anyone considered the magnetic fields generated by this device? There are magnetic fields all over the surface of our planet as well as magnetic fields that protect our planet. If we were to create a large enough magnetic distrubance coupled with several micro black holes & a quantum singularity during a large solar storm or flares as the earths rotational tilt has apexed upwards. Could these issues create a magnetic fusion reaction, that could endanger our planet?

These are the same Darwin Awards candidates who would have complained about the time and effort that went into inventing the wheel, all the while reaping the benefits.

These are the same idiots who criticise the cost of the space program (which is minute compared to military budgets), while happily using all the commercial products that have come out of it.

Worse yet, is the incoherent babble that drags religion into it. From your perspective, God gave you a brain, then said: “Don’t you dare use it now! I gave you that that there thing just to keep your ears apart!”

You fear and hate science but you post here on the Internet, you listen to your iPods, you drive your cars, you take pills for your personality disorders (of which there seem to be quite a few posting here) – SCIENCE gave you that, not God, you freeloaders.

Religion gave us people that ram planes into buildings, 2000 years of the religious genocide of the Dark Ages. Believe in my brand of the tooth fairy, says religion, or I’ll kill you.

The impulse to learn, to see what’s over the next horizon, to aspire to know the Universe, were you space wasters born without it?

If there is a creator, and it has a stomach, you’re turning it my friends.

Ah, why do I bother - this collection of air thieves are beyond reason or intelligent discussion – they’ll believe what they want to, and nothing will change the watery porridge that passes for their minds.

Please, you lot, I beg you, don't breed. Improve the human gene pool by removing yourselves from it.

yea yea yea science is so great. I love science and tech but lets stop and think for a moment... hum science did give us the nuclear bomb. yea the pinacle of humanitys success we can now kill everyone and destroy the world, weather christian or ignorant athiest. Back when we created the nuc we thought we were doing the correct thing(at least some of us) but actually we are big children more or less saying look mom, whatI can do with no real regards for the consequences. I doubt very seriously the greatest minds in the world would be able to grasp what they were even viewing. Lets face it, they can't cure cancer, the cold, aids, or even make a car that gets good MPG, let alone any sort of spacecraft capable of long distance travel or fast enough to get anywhere in a reasonable amount of time so what makes them think they can even begin to comprehend something so complex.

on a side note, if eveloution is true you idiots then why are Monkeys and s*^t not walking out of the woods and jungles as people still. Oh, yea because when evolution got it right and enough of us popped up, evolution said ok i'm done now the great ones have arrived. Now I can improve on them and the great ones can evolve into something else. ( like giant arrogant pr*ck*)

Man is only utilizing his God-given intelligence to discover what has always been existing (and he has made some progress). The pursuit of scientific endeavor is one such avenue in which he channels that intelligence. Let us hope that the results derived from the LHC help to improve our lives in this world.

I love it when all the religious people try saying how science proves God....when will people stop mixing fairy tales with science? I have yet to see a scientific theory by any 'real' scientist that has anything to do with God. Science is the evolution of religion, you will notice one came out of the other, religious figures trying to explain the doubts inside their head. I am sure that one day people will think the idea of God is silly and leave such archaic ideals and beliefs where they belong, in the past. I hope the people at CERN with the LHC show thing to the world things that we have never even been dreamed of.

All of you are a bunch of idiots. Not a single one of you understand what this does, what it is for, or how it works. I read every comment and you are all ignorant. There is a VERY slim chance of creating micro black holes, strangelets, etc. The things that happen in this collider happen every day in the universe around us and we have not died. Also the fermi collider has has been running for years and we are not dead. this does the exact same thing the fermi collider does only on a larger scale. So shut up, read and understand before you make retarded comments about it. And as for the creationist vs. evolution/big bang argument goes, the Bible is a collection of metaphors. How the hell does anyone know whether creationism and evolution/big bang are actually the same thing or not? If you read the story of creation it could very easily be describing big bang. Stop the Goresque alarmism crap and do some research. As to the moron who said use the money to fight global warming. Give us a break science has already proven repeatedly global warming was happening before humans were even on earth, it is not human caused, Al dipshit gore just wants your money.

Anyway you people need to learn what Higgs Boson, Strangelets, SSPs, singularities, anti matter, and the other things the LHC is trying to identify are before you comment.

To those who did not make stupid ignorant comments, my apologies for you having to read this.

Kind of funny though how people are using a COMPUTER to complain about scientific research into quantum particle behavior. Where the hell do you think the computer you are using came from?

"All these experiments will NEVER lead to the most wonderful "mystries" God created. Only the creator would know how the earth and the universe is made. the human mind has limitations. but God's wisdom is eternal. There are so many things undiscovered within our earth, the sea and the atmosphere. The scientist should spend money on finding that rather than wasting money and resources for something stupid as this. This money could have been utilised for saving the Antartica's melting ice...or fight global warming."

Shouldn't be any worry, especially to you. All you have to do is pray to God and you know that he will stop the melting ice and global warming all by himself and simply because you took the time to ask him. Which brings up a good point; why haven't you done this already? Why hasn't your entire belief practicioners stopped every bad thing in the world? According to your book all you gotta do is take 5 minutes out of your life and pray for stuff to happen? Don't forget to move a mountain while you're at it, I'd like to have one here in the plains next week if you wouldn't mind.

I feel that there may also be a 'collision' of Science and Religion. The more science learns, the closer we get to knowing how awesomly infinite God is and how insignificant we could be. Nice to feel some positive 'vibes' from the universe, in spite of our ignorance.

Kaiser and Deadly Furby, great comments.
Chaos, Your comments make me want to burn down a church. While I'm not a religious man, I have no problem with people that are, as long as they aren't slowing down the enlightenment of other humans. So let me figure out what kind of religious nut you are since its apparent that you are not the type of person that is religious AND educated.
You wonder why monkeys aren't evolving into humans right in front of your eyes. So, I guess you aren't the type of religious nut that thinks the Earth is only 6000 years old, and then there was a great flood and Noah had to save a bunch of animals, but not all were saved (eg the dinosaurs...yeah they lived with humans). Then "god" gave the animals a special power...for a little, so that they can super evolve into all the animals that we see today. Then, "god" said 'well that's enough animals for me!' and took the power back. Are you that kind of religious nut? The kind that wasted money and space to build the creationism museum (which I think is in Ohio, but I may be wrong).
Or, are you the type of religious nut that thinks in the blink of an eye, everything you see before you was just formed? Every animal, and every plant and everyone knew exactly what their nitch in the world was because "god" whispered in the ear of the panda and said you can only eat bamboo, and told the wood pecker to use his beak to break through the bark of a tree in order to eat bugs, and hinted to the flies to lay their eggs on dead animals so that their young could eat it as they grew. That sure would have taken a long time. Are you that kind of religious nut?

I sincerely hope that you do not have any children, adopted or conceived, because I would feel terrible for them that they'll never be aloud to become educated.Because, with your closed minded religious beliefs, when your child asks you what makes the world go round, you'll be able to get off easy and say god did it. Get a clue! Just because science is looking for things that you don't understand doesn't mean they are trying to prove your religion wrong! You CAN believe in god AND still follow science!

By Someone at 5:15 PM ON 09/11/08

@chaos

How are you comparing the difficulties between curing cancer and aids with particle physics? You just automatically assume that one is more difficult then the other based on the progress? If I am not mistaking the reason why there isn’t a cure yet, is because the problems that are being dealt with are evolving at a rapid rate. But you wouldn’t believe that since you don’t believe in evolution!

Which leads me to another point, what the hell are you talking about… “if eveloution is true you idiots then why are Monkeys and s*^t not walking out of the woods and jungles as people still”? I’m not sure what to make of this. You’re either a troll yanking my chain, or your understanding of evolution is seriously flawed!

A lot of good can be had, from better understanding our environment. Just because we discover better ways to annihilate ourselves, doesn’t mean we should stop seeking ways to better improve our lives.

Just out of curiosity, what is your idea of good fuel economy?

i'm utterly astonished at how many ppl actually think this collider could end the world. they must not have any idea of what they are and how they work, they really should read up on it, just a little bit at least, before embarrassing themselves that way.
the LHC is a WAY cool bit of physics tech, which will likely answer a few questions and raise a few more. we have far more to fear from our aging fission nuke power plants than the LHC.

I am a Christian who believes that God created the world and I plan to be a chemical research scientist once I get out of college. Honestly, if Christianity is a great and true as we say it is, then we have nothing to worry about as far as it being disproved. There is no reason to get defensive about good science as long as it is ethical; ex. infecting people with diseases to see what happens is not ethical. But anything else... what's the point of calling science stupid. God created us to discover things, he doesn't just tell us everything, that would be boring and lifeless, science is good. I am excited to see the results and new finding about matter.

Even though I believe evolution is a bogus belief, I'm not a hater. What point is there in hating people who disagree with you? I can say for an honest fact that I would gladly be friends with anyone who believes in evolution, even though we would completely disagree or anyone else who is not Christian, is that not what most churches say...love your neighbor as yourself. We need to stop being hypocrites, evolutionists and gay people and atheists are all people too, Jesus ate with tax collectors - people who were hated by almost everyone (now and then), so how can any Christian go crazy bashing on these people, no wonder they despise us...most of the people who call themselves Christians say one thing and do another, how can anybody respect that. I don't blame the atheists for despising us, only a few of us are actually genuine.
I only wish that people could somehow push through the religion that religious people have created of themselves, and see if maybe on the other side, past the cloud of human intervention that the religious world has created (not God), they might see a glimpse of how truly awesome and amazing God is, and how Christianity is meant to be. God will always love you, even if you could care less, even if I am a stupid idiot who is nothing.

By Bo at 12:12 AM ON 09/12/08

I think science is so totally awesome. It is not incompatible with Christianity, we just like more solid evidence is all. Any thing discovered by this experiment will neither confer or deny the creators existence though.

I know it didn't destroy us this time round but the next time? When they use full power and what not? If the answer is based up theories and beliefs of what SHOULD happen they should wait until they know what would happen by use of a smaller scale model at least

From what I've seen so far, this discussion is getting wrongly trended to religious-non religious issue, which is probably the only trend it should not have. I have red all kind of arguments that state, for instance, that this kind of collisions happen every day from the cosmic radiation...but confining them in a tube is not a factor? if they are going to colide at a rate o 800 million/seg, that is not a factor? does it not pushes the probabilities of creating a stable black hole sometime down the line? Yes, very creditable scientists say the odds are so little that they should be discharged...(how much of scientific thinking is this?)... but other equally credited scientists claim that the oods aren't so little.
Well, I'm just someone interested in science... i'd love to see the unified theory proven in my days...as well as a practical cold fusion, or supersemiconductors, etc...as these theories may in fact, provide some progress for mankind in a lot of fields...
Along the next few months or years, the odds will be ticking...and lets just hope that Stephen Hawkings radiation theory is right...
but in the end the day, why do I have the feeling that this has much more about scientist vanity that with any other thing?

RAVI says: "Is this a target towards development"

Are you asking if the goal of the LHC is the development of future technology? That is, are you asking if the LHC is the "R" of "R and D"? If you are, I do not think so, as the work at CERN is pure research, pure science. However, I think that if the experiment confirms the existence of extra dimensions and superstrings, then perhaps, it may lead to a better understanding of gravity and spacetime, and this better understanding may, in turn, lead to the development of devices for controlling gravity and spacetime, devices such as artificial gravity generators, warp drives, and time machines.

"Such experiment may also lead the generation towards dark or otherwise! unlike experiments for future developments..."

Are you saying that this experiment will lead our generation to darkness or something just as bad, unlike experiments that lead to the development of future technology? If you study the field of particle physics in a top-tier graduate school, earn a PhD in the field, and do postgraduate studies in the field, you may get your answer.

"WHAT ABOUT IF.........DAVV?"

Are you asking who this Dave that posters Jen and Reaper are referring to? If you are, he is a character from the book and movie "2001: A Space Odyssey". The character is an astronaut and scientist onboard a ship, the Discovery, on a mission to the planet Jupiter. During the long voyage, the ship's computer, HAL, unfortunately begins to misbehave and kills the astronaut's shipmates. The man is then forced to shut it down, and during the last steps of the shutdown, HAL tells him, "I'm afraid, Dave". Just as the shutdown happens, the ship enters Jupiter space, and Dave discovers something wonderful!

One of the most amazing scientific experiments is beginning to take place and most people's comments are incoherent babble about religion, the end of the world, or other such mythical nonsense!
I was attracted to this site by the exclusive pictures, but my eyes wandered to the thread when the first two comments showing stated that we could never understand god's universe and, well..., I have no idea what the second comment was. It seemed to be in English but I wouldn't bet on it.
Children! We, Earth and the human race, are either accidents of nature or the playthings of uncaring gods. The latter is too fantastic, so I'll stick with the former.
This experiment merely attempts to recreate a possible, but likely beginning of our universe. It might provide more logical explanations about how we came to be, and whether there are other universes like ours or the facts that make us unique.
One of those facts is incredibly self-evident! We're an amazingly curious race about where we came from and our place in the universe. If some feel that religion gives them that sense, fine. Go in peace.
The rest of us will continue our intellectual pursuits without mystery or mysticism. Maybe we'll find an answer, maybe not, but in the meantime, we'll be acting our role in the universe, seeking and exploring in the best way we can to find out how we, and you, came to be here.

I know this whole thing is stupid!
We all know you scientist are smart so wtf are you all trying to prove?
All this shows what morons you all are!

Poster wassup says: "I know this whole thing is stupid!

I assume "this whole thing" that you refer to is the LHC. In this context, I gather that you are using the word "stupid" in the sense of "lacking of interest or point". So you are basically saying that the LHC lacks a point. However, the following paragraph indicates that the LHC does have a point, and is therefore not stupid.

The scientists - specifically, the experimental particle physicists at the LHC - are not trying to prove anything, especially anything like, that they are smart. However, they are doing what hominids have done for millions of years: to try to find out what things are made of and how they are structured. The first hominids smashed things, like rocks and bones, together; they made a lot of shards and fragments, played with them, and learned about the insides of things, but they also discovered that some of the shards and fragments were extremely useful for cutting, scraping, and penetrating. As the ages passed, the hominids progressed to smaller and smaller things, down to molecules, down to atoms, and today, down to subatomic particles. And during this time, they also discovered that they could generalize what they had discovered on the small scale to larger scales, to their territory, to the Earth, and today, to the Universe; they were essentially also trying to find out what the Universe is made of and how it is structured. The LHC is just the next step, down and up. And just as the first hominids discovered the usefulness of the shards and fragments, modern humans may discover the usefulness of shards and fragments created by the LHC, perhaps, in the development of devices for controlling gravity and space-time, devices such as artificial gravity generators, tractor beams, deflectors, and warp drives, things that may one day save life on Earth by spreading its seed across the Universe.

So wassup, in the context of the natural curiosity of the hominids, does the LHC still show that these scientists are morons?

Wow, this is just too much for me!! BTW, the photos look nice.

To all religious morons: god doesn't exist, he was CREATED by MANKIND to avoid wondering how "miracles" happened. It all began when we wondered about birth around... 50 thousand years ago or something. Religion has just slowed down the progress of mankind by AT LEAST 1000 YEARS. When movies were invented they were evil because there were people trapped in them. Before that when the camera was invented it was evil because it "stole people's souls". Now this. It is IMPOSSIBLE for the LHC to create black holes or even destroy the world. And even IF it did the black hole would disintegrate almost instantly (it wouldn't even have time to even change a bit of the matter around it). I think that all you religious nuts just don't want the LHC to prove that god doesn't exist (i think that it'll give us the answer to the origin of matter in the universe). 1500 years ago or so every1 KNEW the earth was the center of the universe. Scientists that thought differently were killed because "religion is always right". Then every1 KNEW the earth was flat and anyone who thought differently was killed for the same reason. Now because scientists try to take down god every1 "KNOWS" this will end the world. stop being idiots and go worship god or something.

wow, i can't believe that this has came out! i haven't been following through all the way here, but this is amazing. i'm going to print this and the press releases off and document this. such a great scientific creation! great work!

Great experiement for mankind , but very vEry VerY lousy results

By russtherat at 12:32 PM ON 12/25/08

Great pictures but what the H**L to they show. It would have been nice if someone had taken the time to describe what they are showing. Could just as well have been a Disneyland ride. Don't know how this got in my e-mail BUT I like pretty pictures.

I'm sure this has been said already in repsonse to the comments about "But why risk everyone's lives?", etc., but here goes:
There is indeed a chance that the collider will create black holes. But NOT giantic, center-of-the-universe, destroy-the-world black holes.
These black holes would be only a few micrometers across, and last for a tiny fraction of a second.
As in, don't use the world being destroyed as an excuse to not write that econ paper.
Check out http://hasthelargehadroncolliderdestroyedtheworldyet.com/
fr a quick breakdown on thesubject.

This is a wonderfull bit of science kit, i wonder if it could create a warp field lol. And to get the religious loony's into an even bigger flap...MAN CREATED GOD so he could make up lifes answers without proof then smart man created science to find the real answers... ooh i can here the bibles thumping now.

By *face palms* what the hell... at 1:27 PM ON 05/02/09

what the hell, why cant we just live on earth without any damn scientists trying to prove something that wont even matter in the long run...i just want to live my life without any black holes or astroids hitting the earth, or end of the worlds. seriously sucide bombers are blowing up towers when they could be blowing up this thing. there is a possiblitliy we all could die..so why dont you build it on the dam moon or somthing. so you know what..screw you this isnt a "technology advancment" if we are all gunna die. the end of the world will come but the funny thing is, is we caused it.
