We attended the opening of Chicago-based artist Dzine's new show at the Deitch gallery in Long Island City, New York on Sunday night to see some of the sparkliest vehicles in town. Dzine's new sculptures include a bright orange motor boat decked out with every kind of speaker imaginable (plus two LCD TVs on the back of the boat) and a complex blue bike with an attached throne as well as regular seat (and just as intense a speaker set up as the boat). The exhibit's coup de grâce was the red and gold bike with what looked like an engine mounted on its tail. The detailing on that one is real gold plating.
Dzine's vehicles all really work (and most have sold already, for exorbitant prices), but they're considered sculptures. The artist, who is of Peurto Rican descent, is "exploring the middle ground between Chicano lowrider street culture and contemporary art," and has combined "the pristine, cool of an art gallery and the seediness of the street," according to the gallery.
The exhibit included paintings as well as sculptures: the wall installation with "embellished turntable" pictured below won't take you anywhere, but it certainly looks cool.

Absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!! Go see the exhibition ASAP.
Probably over 1000 people at the opening reception. The paintings are amazing as well, all covered with glass beads and Swarovski crystals. Their is also a fully customized car called "Pimp Juice" that he hopped at the opening. Such a refreshing show. One of the best in NY for September by far.

that bike is deadly -many spikes and heavy elements . If you hit someone there is big chance that you injure him badly and yourself too

Most of the “audio/visual” art that this artist claims are his creations are actually designed and fabricated by others. Carlos then applies a few finishing touches and claims it as his own creation. The most recognizable one would have to be the Deitch Studios Cadillac Fleetwood. This car was built and designed years earlier and even appeared in LowRider magazine as "Pimp Juice" in 2004/2005.

If he changes the pieces, why does it matter? It becomes alive again and original, especially surrounded by his paintings and installations. I think they are interesting and beautiful. I do not find anything wrong that he may be re-appropriating certain objects. Also, to be fair, I know nothing about Lowrider culture. But you have only pointed out one piece that he may have changed. I just went to his website, and for the most part, all the other custom artworks I viewed are original. Overall, Im just glad he is able to have these works preserved in museums all over the world instead of sitting in a garage collecting dust. Look at artists like Richard Prince, Jeff Koons and other contemporary artists (How about Damien Hirst and his skull – He applied diamonds to a found or purchased skull). Artists do this all the time. Why are you not pointing this out? Dzine (Carlos Rolon) is bringing these objects (pre-fab or original) to life for the public and art-world to see and appreciate. most of the bikes (and his custom boat sculpture) are original and designed by the artist. he works with fabricators in miami, ny and los angeles. all of the parts are then painted, pin-striped, assembled and finished in chicago.

These lowrider bikes dont change much, nor did the car. Majority of the lowriders were bought and built by accredited builders and artist in thier own right. What seems now to be more and more well known lowriders appearing in his shows, most that have had high profile artist names behind them. Pinnacle, now named The Tiping Point, lowrider bike of the yr is a perfect example. Carlos adds minor embelishments, the crystals, takes full credit as the builder.

"The Truth or Truth Seeker"
Get your facts straight.
1) It is not unusual for people in the Low riding community to
Purchase existing bikes/cars...etc and appropriate them or use parts from them to create something new or just paint right over it and keep it for themselves. Then use the car or bike for personal use.
2) The two 'famous' known low riders you only seem to only focus on and use as your ammo are 'pimp juice' and/or 'pinnacle'. These where in fact purchased by the artist - then he worked closely with the original owners to embellished or change them. This is also something you have no knowledge about.
Dzine is actually close friends with Rene Espinoza (previous owner of "Pimp Juice". Dzine also had Renes Company LP Motorsports to fabricate Dzines custom boat sculpture, which was developed from drawings by the artist). Dzine also worked closely with Mike Linn, previous owner of "Pinnacle" - now titled "The Tipping Point", which he is also currently developing new projects with him.
3) One thing you obviously have no knowledge about is the museum world.
-Artists, galleries and museum never list their fabricators.
-The Low-Riding community does list their fabricators and builders (this is where their is a conflict of interest)
-A low-rider will traditionally have many factory offered accessories / options and often many after-market accessories added.
4) Both Rene and Mike Linn have been acknowledged via press
(A good example is this NY Times article: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/16/style/tmagazine/16boat.html)

*In collaboration with Mike Linville
**Audio: Composed, arranged and produced by Jay Electronica. Used with permission of the artist.)
The two main low-riders you only focus on that were appropriated and changed by the artist. This was in discussion, agreed, then in collaboration with the previous owners - or as you say, "accredited builders".
Fact: all the parts for Pimp Juice and The Tipping Point where fabricated elsewhere and put together by a 'custom' shop'. This is how these things work in the low riding community. No one person does everything from beginning to end.
Do you really think the 'accredited builders' cut the metal, engrave, paint, assemble, diamond tuck the cloth, make the lights and accessories themselves? Come on. Get real.
Lastly Mr.Truth/Truth Seeker:
Since you fail to acknowledge that Dzines work is all original. Here are links to the many other original pieces the artist has produced and created with his team of fabricators that are well known in the Lowriding community such as:
BoneCollector, NY
Ripsta and Eddy Piccalo/R.I.P Car Club, Miami
Mike Linn, ToyShop, Miami
Rollerz Only Car Club, Texas, San Antonio and L.A
Speedys Plating, L.A

Do you just happen to be a jealous artist or low-rider that has not
been acknowledged by your peers?
Or
Do you just need a hug?
