Desktop PC with 7-inch touchscreen doesn't need its own monitor

shuttle-d10-001.jpgHere's something you don't see every day: a desktop PC with a built-in touchscreen. Usually, desktop PCs are designed to sit tucked under your desk and away from view, allowing an external monitor to display what it's got to show. Not the case with the Shuttle D10: it's got a 7-inch LCD touchscreen right on the front.

With a resolution of only 800x480, this clearly isn't meant to replace your standard desktop PC. But if you're looking to install a PC somewhere like your car or as a supplement to your home theater setup where you don't have room for a standalone monitor, it could be a pretty good solution. It looks like it'll be available in Japan starting this week starting at very reasonable, sub-$500 prices.

I think I've seen a computer with an inbuilt monitor before ... oh yes, I remember now, they're called laptops.

Hmmm... There are lots of laptops, and there are lots of sff computers with "inbuilt" monitors. This pc is not meant to be classified as either, however, and think it does fill a new niche rather well if performance is what I believe it to be. Wondering how well it would work with some enlightenment-screened linux distro. KIHARA

Hmmm... I'm pretty sure Apple has been building computers with built-in monitors for quite some time. I think they're called iMacs. And they have full-size monitors. But congratulations to pc developers for getting to the 90's.

Good catch on the "iMacs have full-size monitors in them" thing. Pity they never developed an OS that worked worth a damn to bundle with it. We had an iMac in house and were frustrated at the conundrum of "computer doesn't have the hardware to run OSX, online apps don't support OS 8.n" - now we have Dell laptops and have never missed the iMac, which went to Goodwill Industries.

Hey, lets not forget the 1980 TRS-80 Model III which had a built in b&w monitor. It also had a whopping 16k of RAM memory and only cost $1000.

I guess you should drop that imac screen cause it makes you blind son. It says a 7 inch TOUCH screen. We windows users prefer to touch our screens than our selves.
