The Ultimate Music Box: KDDI AU unveils transforming concept phone

auboxtoplay1.jpgAlways keeping one eye on the future, Japan's KDDI AU Design Project has a fresh batch of concept devices on display in Tokyo. Perhaps the most intriguing of the bunch is a phone called the Box To Play. The sleek concept phone combines a cell phone (with all the normal calling and camera features you'd expect) along with a sort of music device which appears to include a tiny embedded turntable that allows you to scratch the music playing on the phone.

In addition to the music features, the phone also plays with design by transforming into a box with a graphic music interface. Still photos and colorful descriptions simply can't do justice to how cool this phone looks, so go check out the video of the Box To Play in action here.

For a "Box to Play", it's certainly an outside-the-box concept... Cool, and clever. I'd buy one. Thinking if the inside panels of the "Box" were magnetic, that might explain how the gizmo manages to stay closed when together. I like this concept, and was thinking if they combined touch-sensitive screens with a device posistion sensor, you could even have a qwerty keyboard to text or email with if you held it sideways. The dual touch-screens might even be useful for games or other applications with such a phone. All in all, I give the prototype 4 stars and a "Nifty!"
