Samsung X360 laptop touted as 'lighter than Air,' makes MacBook Air look like an airhead

sam360_front.jpg

If you’ve fallen in love with the MacBook Air but just can’t stand the thought of muddling through OS X, becoming a snooty Mac user, or suffering through Apple’s skin-deep quality and often-shoddy workmanship, Samsung is aiming its .66-inch-thin X360 laptop directly at you.

This 13.3-inch laptop weighs a mere 2.8 pounds and shines where the MacBook Air skimps: It’s the inputs, stupid. How’s three USB ports (compared to the Air’s 1), a 7-in-1 card reader (compared to the Air’s none), HDMI and Ethernet ports (no such thing on the Air), VGA port, and of course, Wi-Fi, 1.3-megapixel camera, LED-backlit display, and a 128GB solid-state hard drive sound?

Best yet, a couple of our buddies have laid their hands on this beauty and tell us it’s solid as a rock. Now if Samsung can just beat that MacBook Air price — which should be easy to do — it’ll make the MacBook Air look like it’s for AirHeads. For all the details, see the Samsung press release after the jump, or just peek at the gallery below to see the luxo finishes, colors and beauty of this fine machine. We want.

Samsung's Press Release:

Berlin, Germany, August 29, 2008 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a market leader in consumer electronics and world leader in IT technology, today lifted the lid on the most innovative addition to its ever expanding notebook range – the ultra-lightweight Samsung X360. Capable of meeting the extreme performance and connectivity needs of the new aristocrats of the mobile world, the X360 sets a completely new standard in mobile computing – offering a comprehensive set of features unlike anything of its kind on the market.

Even though it is the lightest notebook in its 13.3 inch class, weighing a miniscule 1.27 kg*, the Samsung X360 incorporates all of the extensive functionality demanded by ultra mobile and results-driven professionals. Unlike the claims of some other "light" notebooks, the X360 is fully featured without compromise, including 3 USB ports, a built-in HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) connection, a 34mm express card slot and VGA output. For fast and easy transfer of documents, images, video or music it incorporates a highly flexible 7 in 1 memory card reader, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR* (Enhanced Data Rate) and super-fast 802.11n wireless technology. It also boasts an integrated digital motion camera, so it's easy to stay in touch with colleagues or friends using video-conferencing or live messaging. But there is more, for business and home office users the X360 incorporates a 10/100/1000 Ethernet LAN connection and support for Samsung P-Dock, docking station – which simplifies cabling and provides a 'single click' connection and easy access to a wide variety of ports..

"The X360 pushes back the boundaries of form and function to deliver real style with substance," said HS Kim, Executive Vice President of Samsung Computer Systems Division. "It offers a tremendous reduction in size and weight but without compromising on functionality, so users have everything they need for life on the move," Mr. Kim added.

The X360 will be available from September this year in European countries including UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy, and also in Russia, China and Hong Kong.

For non stop productivity on the move, the X360 incorporates a removable 6 cell battery that enables up to 10 hours continuous use – making all day mobile computing a practical reality. Its efficient power consumption is supported by the use of Intel(R) Centrino(R) 2 Ultra Low Voltage processor technology and an innovative 13.3" WXGA (1280x800) LED screen, whose backlight technology consumes significantly less power but delivers around 33 percent improved brightness over a traditional LCD screen, so it is easier to work in a range of conditions. And with security at a premium, it even has a secure biometric fingerprint and trusted platform module authentication system to ensure that your data is always fully protected.

With its captivating craftsmanship, the X360's Protect-O-Edge casing is built using durable magnesium alloy to provide amazing strength and superior reliability coupled with enhanced ergonomics and premium styling. And, wherever possible, Samsung uses its own components from memory, batteries and screens. This focus on manufacturing excellence means Samsung mobile computers have one of the best reliability records in the industry, lowering the total cost ownership.

The X360 also features the option of an ultra-fast and reliable 128GB Solid State Drive (SSD)*, which significantly enhances performance compared to a typical hard disk drive (HDD), with a boot time that is 25-50 percent faster and data access times that are 300 percent faster (53 MB/s) for reading and 150 percent faster (28 MB/s) for writing. With no moving parts SSDs also weigh less, uses significantly less power and are less prone to errors and damage - in fact, the X360 is equipped to withstand twice the impact of the hard-drive-enabled model. So, the notebook will perform faster and last even longer.

Finally, the X360 features an amazing Samsung innovation - Silver Nano Technology. By sprinkling incredibly small, nano-sized silver ion powder on the keyboard your system will remain "bacteria free" for even longer.

FEATURES: World class mobile performance

Featuring state of the art Intel(R) Centrino(R) 2 Ultra Low Voltage processor technology, which delivers unrivalled performance, energy efficiency and connectivity too keep you working longer. The X360 comes with the all new 45 nano-meter sized Intel(R) Core™2 Duo mobile processor, which literally puts the power of two processors into one, so you can open up all of your favourite applications with no compromise on performance.

Sharper display Its 13.3" wide display provides up to 30% more viewing area than traditional screens and allows you to enjoy photo-like image quality, greater viewing angles and better text legibility, reducing eye strain and therefore increasing productivity. Using LED technology also means that the screen is thinner, up to 33% brightness, and uses much less power than traditional LCD screen. Even the durability of the system is better, because there are fewer breakable parts.

Light Weight and Durable Despite being ultra lightweight and slim at just 1.27kg, the X360 is built to last. It's durable Protect-o-Edge(c) casing provides amazing strength and superior reliability. As a result, the X360 is more than capable of withstanding the inevitable hardships of life on the move, which all translates into a measurably lower Total Cost of Ownership.

Simple data sharing Incorporating a 7 in 1 memory card reader (MS, MS Pro, SD, SDHC, MMC, MMC plus, xD) and 3 x USB ports, it lets you to seamlessly move data from your digital camera, camcorder, MP3 player or PDA straight to the notebook. Revolutionary Battery Life The battery life is vastly improved. It can deliver battery powered performance of up to 6-10 hours based on usage scenario. The longer battery life is guaranteed by the LED display and the flash-based SSD which require less power to run.

Huge 128GB Solid State drive Its Solid State Drive (SSD) has a boot time that is 25-50 percent faster than systems that employ a traditional, rotational hard disk drive (HDD). Overall system performance is also significantly enhanced, as the SSD is capable of reading 300 times faster (53 MB/s) and writes 150 percent faster (28 MB/s) than typical HDDs, and the seek time (the amount of time required to find information in the system memory) is also greatly reduced. Having no moving parts means that power consumption is reduced dramatically, extending battery life, and it is capable of withstanding much greater impacts, so there is no loss of data.

Bacteria free By sprinkling incredibly small, nano-sized silver ion powder on the keyboard your system will remain "bacteria free" – for even longer.

Total security For complete peace of mind, the X360 incorporates a secure biometric fingerprint authentication system and a trusted platform module, so your valuable information will always remain safe from prying eyes - and you may never need to remember another password!

Fast docking Is compatible with Samsung's P-Dock docking station, which simplifies cabling and provides a 'single click' connection and easy access to a wide variety of ports, including Serial, 5 x USB, LAN, HDMI, SIO, e-SATA and DVI (Digital Video Interface) to deliver outstanding digital image quality on large displays and projectors.

ECO friendly Samsung's own certification mark (ECO), which guarantees ECO-friendly features, including removal of hazardous substances and material, optimised energy efficiency and effective material usage for a more environmentally friendly product.

Warranty, On Time, On Us All this is backed up with the peace of mind that your notebook is protected by Samsung's class leading warranty service. In the unlikely event that something goes wrong with your notebook, the Samsung International warranty infrastructure will provide you with a fast track collection repair and return service for your notebook in order to minimise disruption and get you back working as quickly as possible.

umm... you may want to cover up, your bias is showing.

I work on PC and Mac laptops for a living, and other than being a bit difficult to get into for service, Apple's equipment is no more, and sometimes noticeably less shoddy that other manufacturers of similar hardware.

And all things being equal... when things get as thin as MacBook Air does, I trust aluminum more than I trust thin plastic. Plastic has it's advantages in elasticity and impact resistance, but only when it is significantly robust enough. Thin plastic cracks and breaks much more, and is more serious than even an unsightly aluminum dent.

After 5 years of a 3-year round rotation cycle... I have seen lots of computers get old. Aluminum, if treated well, lasts much better than plastic. If treated poorly they both break.

That isn't to even get started with the software support differential between Mac OS compared to XP Pro or Vista. And I do both, every single day.

By Myles Taylor at 3:55 PM ON 08/29/08

I agree with boxerfanatic. A big part of reviewing products is being objective. You take too many potshots at the Air...what's the point? Give it up already. Also, you make a statement about users who "just can’t stand the thought of muddling through OS X" and I wonder what that's based on! Compared to Vista, OS X is heaven. Basically, this reviewer has no credibility. Start being objective for a change...people will pay more attention.

By Thera at 6:18 PM ON 08/29/08

What with the paranoia, looks like Mac fanboys. They only mentioned the main 3 differences with Air in the very beginning, get off your high horses.

Anyway, back on the matter, sounds pretty interesting, but I'll wait to see the price to get my hopes up.

"but just can’t stand the thought of muddling through OS X, becoming a snooty Mac user, or suffering through Apple’s skin-deep quality and often-shoddy workmanship"

WOW... lost me on that first paragraph! are u kidding me? Is this a personal blog or a respected network? Before people start flaming me as a mac fan boy, I have used Linux, OS X and Windows for a couple of years now (I even worked with Microsoft), so my opinion its completely unbiased unlike this writer who simply stated HIS (looks like not experienced enough) opinion as a fact.

The machine looks great (I personally liked the Lenovo X300 a bit more than the Air) but like the Lenovo X300, this one its not completely aiming at the same user base than the Air is...

It looks like a nice small computer. To the guy saying its plastic, sure some pieces may be, but the pieces that mean anything, or a magnesium alloy. Thats a metal, not a plastic there big boy. As for the Mac/PC debate. Get over it. Mac OSX is nice, but its not worth my time paying a premium for a OS that works 80% of the time, compared to my Vista/XP systems that work.. Oh.. 80% + of the time. I have worked with Macs, and PC's. The only reason OSX is "stable" is because its built on a Unix/Linux core. Seriously, they only thing they did, was make it look pretty and write drivers. Ooo, Big deal. At least my PC can do everything a Mac can do, and more. As soon as I can install OSX on my Intel Hardware "Legaly" and more third party software supports OSX I would switch, otherwise. Windows is the better of the 2. Now, if all OS's today had the same support from third party software vendors. I would be on linux all day long.

By Are u kidding me? at 12:03 AM ON 08/30/08

oh believe me I'm over it... after using everything out there I have stick with what I believe (after much trial an error) its the best option.

MEH Love ur scientific study "OS that works 80% of the time, compared to my Vista/XP systems that work.. Oh.. 80% + of the time" Have u even used osx and vista? Even the Microsoft admits that Vista its not the best product it can be and u still say it works better than osx?

One thing u say does makes sense... unix is a huge part of why osx works! that's part of the reason why Microsoft has thought about dumping the current kernel and start all over again but its to costly and would take a long time to do...

Seriouly the only thing pc's are better that macs its for playing games... if u are a gamer then stick with a pc otherwise keep ur options open, try new things or even wait for Win 7 who even in its early stages its looking much better than vista right now! But cmon don't tell me vista works better than osx!

By info_tech_guy at 8:19 AM ON 08/30/08

Nice looking hardware great specs. Tiresome "slam on" Apple and Apple-users tangent detracts from the discussion. Compare, contrast, discuss but please don't hijack a product evaluation and turn it into a beatdown or flame war. I do enterprise systems administration all day, shifting between Windows, Solaris UNIX and Linux. There's no question where the majority of problems arise. My personal choice for a stable platform from which to work or play is anything with a UNIX-like kernel. So, I don't care if this notebook is pre-loaded with Windows XP/Vista/7-somthing, I'd repartition the HDD and install some combination of Linux and Solaris x86 -- with or without some virtualizaton software sitting at the bare metal layer and inside the OS's. Now that USB 3.0 is out, I do wonder when that will make it into notebooks.

By 94_XJ at 12:16 AM ON 08/31/08

The opening is terrible and skin deep quality? All 3 of the Macs I've ever owned are still running...including my 1993 MacBook and 1996 Performa 6300...which is much more than I can say about a few Dell machines, a Gateway and a Samsung laptop which has been nothing but trouble since it arrived as the replacement for the first Samsung I ordered.

"The X360 comes with the all new 45 nano-meter sized Intel(R) Core™2 Duo mobile processor..." That's 45nm architecture...not 45nm sized. We're still quite some time away form 45nm processors.

I know people already flamed me for being a Mac Fanboy, but really, this isn't about that. Even if I hated Macs and used Windows exclusively, this reviewer was terrible. He is basing his review on bashing another product, which completely obscures the merits of what looks like a great product. Whether I agree with his personal opinion or not is unimportant; what's important is that a reviewer is supposed to be objective. If you wanted personal opinions, then you can get those anywhere.

By bobuncapher at 2:29 AM ON 09/04/08

The reviewer for this product obviously has never used Mac OS X and even wonder if he's ever laid hands on a Mac. I understand that PC users love their Billy Boxes and Mac users love their Macs and it's fine to have a preference, but too often PC users slam Apple and the Mac without enough hands-on Mac time to truly back up any of their comments. Very happy to see other commenters here who recognize this guy for the no-talent hack that he is.

Is Charlie White 12 years old? Hooray for Sumsung. See? Easy. No epeen, no self-esteem issues.

You've just lost a subscriber. I only get DVICE spam because of SciFi channel. I don't even know why I let your 2-week lagged "news" hit my mailbox as long as I have. Good luck regurgitating Engadget and Gizmodo for 4 more months, and then finding a new job in January.

Wow, could you guys BE stupider, more ill-informed or more biased?

Why don't you go fcuk yourselves? There's something to contemplate while you're waiting to find a solution to Windoze's blue screen of death.

By Stop The Yeah BUT!!! at 6:15 AM ON 09/04/08

Folks,

We do not need to stoop the lower levels of the esteemed or selfesteemed author of this article.

We should rise above.

There were some tid bits here that are impressive.

I do think the price will be the factor here to consider the most. The specs other than plastic in places will be the major plus. However as with most new products in this space the Price will make or break.

As for SciFi. Folks, do us all a favor, find a refined author to write this column that the SciFi Channel can be proud of.

Back Alley slap, jab and punch just is not for a main stream column that I thought you were trying to create.

I had looked forward to your columns initially. However over time this has become something of an also rand column.

Do us all a favor, either put the money behind this and put someone who is objective and can write more of a technically centric column or shut it down and focus your efforts elsewhere.

SciFi is known to always be ahead of the rest. Be ahead of the rest, do not just follow, Lead....

By paralax at 7:57 AM ON 09/04/08

Please, show your bias more. You haven't marginalized enough of your audience yet. MS probably isn't paying you enough.

By GeekGrrl at 8:36 AM ON 09/04/08

There are tactful ways to thoughtfully review and compare products. This is not one of them. I will not discontinue reading DVICE, but I will no longer be able to trust "reviews" by Charlie White.

I thought the opening paragraph WAS the Samsung press release!

By mr_coffee at 10:17 AM ON 09/04/08

you Mac users... so sensitive.

This wasn't a commentary on the operating system, but on the hardware. This laptop CRUSHES the Air feature by feature, period. That having been said, the only things the Air had going for it were the aluminum case and overall thinness.

I take it the "Apple Defenders!" - this new group of Mac savvy superheros who have come to Apple's rescue over this article in the interest of not being referred to as "fan boys" - apparently missed the part where the Air came with an x86 processor so that us Windows users could use the inferior hardware - just like they do - and make an impartial decision about it. However, doing unscientific research such as using Google to search for "air macbook windows" reveals that the general opinion is that the Air isn't a great Windows machine. While I'm sure the Air excels at rendering Quicktime movies in its native OS - I digress: as this wasn't an OS discussion.

This machine offers - understandably - superior hardware due to the nature of Moore's Law. My only anti-Mac observation will be that this windows machine is starting out at $2300 in the UK - and as the Air started at this price in the US - when it was new - with half the hardware - my stance is still that paying twice the price so I can have produce on the cover isn't worth it. Hey, if it makes you feel better, I'm sure Apple overprices stickers with their logo on it that you could purchase and stick to the cover of this Samsung... or you could wait 6 months after its release in the US and pay $1K-$2K more for the Apple version with fewer inputs - although when that time inevitably comes - I'd advise being a little less defensive when we Windows users revert to the use of the phrase "fan boys".

My new mail rule: If sender is "dvice" move message to junk.
I have time for GOOD content, not this drivel. You've shown your true colors with this review..... bye bye.

By phreekk at 2:18 PM ON 09/04/08

I work on a mac daily, I have a PC at home. I prefer the PC, Windows XP not Vista. But I feel that this laptop is lacking a bit despite a nice appearance. It should have a DVI jack and not be so bulky on the back end, it slide in smoothly into a messenger back to make it easier to carry.

On an OS X note, my OS X laptop has given me the Mac Translucent Black Screen of Death (with no actually helpful message) at least 4 times as often as my home PC has shown the Blue Screen of Death. My OS X laptop is also about 4 times as slow as my PC despite having hardware that should be equivalent in terms of CPU and RAM. My PC doesn't require me to hit the alt key whenever I want to use a mouse activated menu. And I don't need to open Parallels when I ever I want to use a program made for Windows like Google Chrome.

I do prefer PCs, but I don't think Samsung has won me over just yet. And the writer can say whatever he wants, it's his blog. And if you can't take a joke or any criticism then get of the Interweb and leave your mother's basement.

By Myles Taylor at 2:36 PM ON 09/04/08

This wasn't an argument about PC vs Mac. The problem with this review is that the reviewer make it about that, which isn't what it should be. No one is commenting on the laptop...they are just listening to his bias and arguing about it.

By blueninja at 2:42 PM ON 09/04/08

Bitter much? Why is it that to make this "Mac-Killer" sound good, all you can really do is talk trash about Apple?

By mac&pcuser at 2:53 PM ON 09/04/08

"This 13.3-inch laptop weighs a mere 2.8 pounds and shines where the MacBook Air skimps: It’s the inputs, stupid. How’s three USB ports (compared to the Air’s 1), a 7-in-1 card reader (compared to the Air’s none), HDMI and Ethernet ports (no such thing on the Air), VGA port, and of course, Wi-Fi, 1.3-megapixel camera, LED-backlit display, and a 128GB solid-state hard drive sound?"
If you look at the specs, it STILL REQUIRES AN EXTERNAL OPTICAL DRIVE, stupid! So when your beloved Vista crashes and burns, you have to hook up your external SuperDrive and plug it in to reinstall your OS?
Buh Bye, Dvice. You are now condemned to the eternal fires of spam folder!
Note to Apple God: Don't you mean fsck yourself?

By rich at 4:18 PM ON 09/04/08

The machine has more inputs than the Air, that's obvious.

What may also be obvious is that BOTH have external optical drives. What may not be obvious is that Apple charges extra for theirs. Of course we don't have firm pricing on this machine, nor do we know what's included in the box and what is on the "Accessories" list so we don't know if Samsung will charge for theirs, but it looks like it's included.

By Star4mation at 4:30 PM ON 09/04/08

The only thing that lets it down is Vista!!!

By Applesux at 5:46 PM ON 09/04/08

Seriously, the Apple/Mac fanbois need to give it a break. So it's a huge deal if an article on a product does the same thing every Mac commercial does? Talk about some hypocritical windbags!

If you can't take it, you shouldn't be dishing it out!

By Sinthor at 11:14 PM ON 09/04/08

Wow. Known for shoddy workmanship? How can someone say that about a company with SO MANY J.D. Power awards for the exact opposite? I'm not sure what Samsung's laptop ratings and record has been, but this review was a bit off center from the start.

It's not about "fanboys" people. Quit using that term any time someone calls out lingo that appears to be biased or is simply factually wrong. In this case, the facts speak clearly. Look up Apple's records and reviews regarding quality, etc. They've had their issues with some models as any company has, but overall, they're about as good as it gets. People calling into question or criticizing a review on a site like this that makes outrageously inaccurate claims like this, don't have to be fanboys. They're just not buying everything they read like some do! Especially if they actually happen to be educated on the subject which often times, even people WRITING such reviews often aren't. Wake up, people!

By hornboy8d at 4:15 PM ON 09/07/08

I have to chime in with the Apple defenders here. The comments at the top of this review aren't just about the Air. They are highly biased statements about Apple products en masse, and Mac users as well. It's subjective intellectual infantilism like this that makes most reviews from Dvice regarding computer hardware pretty questionable. I prefer CNET reviews for most things - they are much more fairminded and simply call it as they see it.

This is not a comment for or against Mac or PC. It is a comment against this reviewer's poor choice of introduction.

By Riz at 7:35 AM ON 09/15/08

Hi all,
Just reading everyone messages.
All you APPLE fans are jealouse when you put this lovely laptop down. The price of the laptop is 800 pounds compared to that of apple air of 1200 pounds.
It has much better features then the apple air.

Compare this samsung laptop with an apple air.

Samsung is way better.

Only coz you MAC and apple fans cant take it that a samsung company has produced a laptop way better then apple air.

By RiG0 at 7:10 PM ON 09/23/08

Apple fanboys always get so touchy. I’ve read so many articles dissing Vista or other products, but any time someone points out why an Apple product is less than the hype; people come flying out from under their rocks. ‘Oh no!! You can’t speak ill of The Great Fruit! Unsubscribe me quick before I realise a computer is just a tool, not a way of life.’

I support a few hundred OS X machines and about 400 PCs with XP and Vista. I much prefer Vista. It’s been stable and easy to use. No random crashes, no Spot Light of Death errors. We moved about 80 computer illiterate people from Mac 9.2 and OS X to Vista and they are thriving.

The Mac Air truly sucks compared to this new Samsung. As for Windows vs Mac, they both have good points and bad points. Best to deal with the devil you know.

Charlie, I know you must have as much fun pissing off the fruit rollups as I do laughing at them rant. :)

By Article, bias??? NO at 5:44 AM ON 10/16/08

The article is NOT bias.

It's called comparison, and it only SEEMS like bias because it's beating Air in every way, fanboys.

Get a grip Apple fanboys; your ignorance and bigotry is no good for anyone.

By Dread at 11:08 AM ON 10/21/08

Yeah, I believe the beginning was a bit biased, slamming Apple as shoddy worksmanship and such, not the best thing. But I am in no way Apple fanboy nor Windows fanboy, not even Linux fanboy. I'm a fanboy of a product that works the way I want it to. Personally, having owned 2 windows laptops and 2 PCs, I've never gotten the blue screen of death, I mean, my 98 machine is still running perfectly! As is my Toshiba 98 laptop! (I heart Toshiba lol) I have never had the opportunity to try a Mac out, but I do like the appearance and apparently functionality, if not making it so simple a 2 year old could figure it. Now, that being said, this laptop seems a great piece of computing technology, with a 128gb SSD, 1-4GB RAM options, and the various ports that are not included in the Air.

The Air seems a tad overpriced, and mainly that pricing is due to the logo and such. I mean, if Mac cut their prices to be near to Windows prices I'd consider buying myself something, but until then, I'll pass on getting one for myself and will test someone else's out. Anyway, the Air obviously doesn't have the ports that this one does, and that seems to be the only MAJOR change, I mean, you got a few minor hardware differences, obviously, but really? Bash Apple because of some ports? So childish.

I wouldn't mind giving this computer a try, but I'd just as likely try an Air as this. Give me an Air and this one, then I'll tell you which deserves to be bashed.

Now, on a personal note, it is true that Apple does quite often bash PC in their ads >_> This is quite true with the entire "I'm a PC and I'm a Mac" ad series. Windows doesn't bash Mac because too large of a consumer base, but the fans of Windows do bash Apple, unjustly I fear, just as prior Windows people bashed Vista before ever touching it. I know I did, but I'm glad I got Vista, it is just as good, if not better than XP, despite what everyone says, don't bash until you have tried it extensively. That's like getting your first computer, you hit a key, nothing happens, and you just go, "Oh, it doesn't do anything, piece of junk." and walk off.

Whiney Crapple users simply do not want to face facts. PC's are cheaper and the build quality comperable. Do the math and work it out. Good review.

Good review overall, a little poking fun at Apple is ok.

Seriously, I bought the MacBook Air a year ago and I love the hardware. I tried very hard to like the OS, even used it almost exclusively for a while, but, aside from other things, I simply have too many windows only programs. I tried Parallas and it keep crashing. Finally I gave up and use my MacBook Air exclusively in BootCamp. I run XP (I hate VISTA and I truly gave it a try for about 6 months). However, I conclude the Mac computers are designed to run on OSX and trying to use Windows on them is just asking for various hang-ups and problems. Better to get a Windows machine in the first place.

I am in the market for a MacBook Air like machine that runs Windows. The Samsung looks like it may fit the bill and Windows 7 looks promising as an upgrade from XP. However, the price of the Samsung seems a bit high compared to the processor!

Oh yes, as to those guys who have their nose bent out of shape because neither has a built in optical drive, that is like having your nose bent out of shape because your sports car can’t carry a 4 by 8 sheet of plywood. Different machines for different purposes. I travel a lot and I have never had a need for an optical drive while traveling. Traveling and with current airline restrictions on weight, I don’t want to carry along a built in optical drive!
