Hidden cost revealed for Rock Band 2's backwards compatibility

rock_band_2_fees.jpg
Harmonix explained how they're implementing the promised feature of Rock Band 1 owners being able to play that game's song in Rock Band 2: by charging you a fee to cover the complicated licensing issues. Because I'm sure Harmonix wasn't going to make enough money from the actual game sales to cover the cost of porting the songs over. But they promise it's not going to be more than five dollars, so keep those 400 Microsoft points handy. They also point out you could easily do this with a rental copy of the game.

That's pretty cheap of Harmonix (pictured above administering a five-dollar kick to the face) to announce a feature and then later announce that, oh by the way, you have to pay extra for it. Up next: a fee for the new campaign, the new instruments, and the new online features. Also, a fee for the new songs. Because licensing doesn’t pay for itself!

This post is from our sister site, Fidgit, which is all about gaming. Head on over for more game news and reviews.

You have to be kidding me. It's $5...good God!

This is not new information that we've just now been broadsided with. When the announcement first happened, we were told it would be accompanied by a nominal fee. Less than a week later, we were told it would be around 5 bucks. If that's too much for you to handle, that's fine, continue swapping your discs out. But Don't misrepresent this as some evil blindsiding. It's not.

That news is neither new nor correct. Harmonix announced from the get go that this would cost less than $5. And, um, let's see...I pay $5 and I get 60-70 songs that I wouldn't normally get to play on RB2 and I don't have to switch discs? Aw, hells yeah, bring that on!!!

you guys better post correct and worthy news without injecting unneeded/uncalled for/biased opinions. 5 dollars or less was a known amount that they were gonna charge for porting to the new game. Harmonix is an amazing company that really does care about their customers. They release quality songs everyweek like they promised and their reputation is amazing. unlike ur guys.

cheap of them to let us pay a low fee of $5 to import 50 songs from their RB1 game to RB2? yea, they are real bad guys... Did guitar hero allow you to transfer songs? not at all. to me, this is a hell of deal I KNOW i will do.

By fireshoes at 7:15 PM ON 08/27/08

I guess the writer didn't bother to read the Rock Band 2 press release, which listed small fee for the import. Which no other company does, by the way.

Wow, Tom. You're slipping, dude. I'll bet that Bruce is home laughing his rear admiral off right about now.

guys friggen get over it instead of using ur rb1 cd, or in some cases having to buy it. Your getting tons of songs for just 5 bucks, if it was really that bad for you you should'nt be buying rock band in the first place.
