UnoCycle single-wheel bike just might be real

unocycle_main.jpg

You've seen the Noah, marveled at the Embrio — isn't it time you saw a one-wheeled motorcycle that might actually be real? Witness the UnoCycle, a single-wheel, single-rider (please don't test that limit) vehicle that appears to be based on gyroscopic tech similar to a Segway and, more importantly, has photographic evidence of its existence. Of guys riding it and everything.

Still in development, the Uno's top speed is 15 mph, but the inventor, Ben Gulak, suspects it could go as high as 40. That's no Harley, but it's faster than a Segway, and remember this is a battery-powered machine that you never need to fill up. Gulak says he's getting lots of interest lately — we hope he invests a little of his incoming finances into a less-skeletal website.

It looks like this puppy is actually a two-wheeler. The third picture looks like two wheels placed pretty closely together. That might give a bit more stability. Still pretty cool looking though.

By Bob/Paul at 12:43 AM ON 07/02/08

@Dave -- you are correct, however that is also how Noah is designed. Tandem wheels on a single axle proved more left/right balance and prevent the rider from needing to adjust his weight so much to stay upright.

I ride a unicycle in real life, and I'll just say if any of these things go into production, you don't want the consumer worrying about staying upright. Sure, at higher speeds left/right take care of themselves, but slow down below 5mph and the consumer would have to do a lot, especially on a heavy machine like this.

By aSH at 4:55 AM ON 07/02/08

Yeah ... but lets see you try to pull a wheelie...

By giga at 10:13 AM ON 07/02/08

@ash: and how do you suspect they do that?

Anyway, I could see these for metropolitan areas at the slower speeds they noted. It would be awesome if they could get the speeds a little higher for freeway speeds, but then again, I know what it's like riding a motorcycle on the freeway and although this is really cool, and the driver would be responsible (I hope) there are too many variables for freeway use. But this is a step in the right direction to start removing the need for petroleum. Let's see more and on the roads soon!

I see an acceleration and breaking problem here... Think about it

By wanker666 at 2:35 PM ON 07/02/08

What about turning sharply, how would that work??

By wildember at 10:58 PM ON 07/02/08

Sharp turns could happen by turning the wheels in opposite directions. Engadget reviewed the same thing and mentioned that. There's really no reason to get one of these over a small electric car with a cabin since you can't really carry anything on this IMO.

By Fahim at 2:43 AM ON 07/03/08

It's not on One Wheel, it looks like though. But the thing is one wheel is supporting another wheel. I don't want to say it's one wheel.

By TheWaffle at 3:52 AM ON 07/03/08

The idea is great and if it works decently then I'm definitly getting one.

By slipstream06 at 3:54 AM ON 07/03/08

Exactly how do turns work on an Uno? Would one wheel speed accelerate more than the other (I feel this to be unlikely), both wheels move in opposing directions (I see this as being fatal), or possibly one wheel moving out in front of the other so as to shift forces to a different axis? Is there a way someone could upload a video of this thing in action with explanation (my preference) or just a simple "This is what happens..."

By Matt at 7:13 AM ON 07/03/08

I have to ask one question. WHY?! What is the benefit of one axle over 2? Your frontal surface area is the same, so wind resistance isn't improved. I doubt there is any meaningful fuel savings. Ok, it looks cool, but seriously... why?

By tahani at 7:27 AM ON 07/03/08

Holly &*#@ this is way cool ! Good on them man if it hits production I will be first in line to purchase one that is certain. The unicycle will be a fantastic change in mobility in this energy strapped world . The cycle would go over huge all over the US and beyond .What a world to have such engineers so young to produce a real answer to today’s energy problems . They deserve a huge grant from our Gov to continue a better unicycle ! If we can get the big oil boys currently running this country to get lost this will go forward . I hop to god the developers will not sell out to the Bush machine . The application of such a forward thinking will be huge . Keep it up guys and gals this country can do miracles when we are pushed to find a better way around .Necessity is the miracle of invention .This is one of them

By ShueHorn at 9:08 AM ON 07/03/08

WTF. Ridiculous idea. What is the benefit of this over a real motorcyle. I have this one legged chair that is gyroscopically stabalized, i just have to be carefull when I sit in it.

By SpeedRacer at 9:23 AM ON 07/03/08

HOLY S--T! THIS IS UGLY AS SIN. and only a top speed of 15miles an hour, so why the Batmanesque aerodynamic styling? Its like putting air foils on a turd.

By Wanderer at 9:30 AM ON 07/03/08

Looks small enough, and electric ... could you drive it to work, right into the elevator, up to your office floor and park it/recharge it right in your office?!! :D

Savings on fuel & monthly parking alone ... hmmm...

By The Shadow at 10:29 AM ON 07/03/08

I would really like to see it in a video, as i would like too see if it nose dives when you slow down or stop, and if it stands on its tail when you accurate. I would also like to see it in the turns, and how stable it is.

By TJinPgh at 11:25 AM ON 07/03/08

I suspect that it's either a hoax or something that will never be produced.
It looks like the "bike" is standing still in every picture. The amount of balance it would require to keep it from diving head first at a stop would stop it from ever being legal on the street.

By shadowtek at 1:32 PM ON 07/03/08

Tough s@#* if you happen to rear end someone. Not even a front wheel to cushion the impact.

By quikdraw at 1:45 PM ON 07/03/08

Can I get one for half price?

By Sudilos at 3:22 PM ON 07/03/08

Looks like they could easily add forks and a front wheel at very close spacing to the rear wheel to make a kind of short-trike. Could help with stability for speed of the thing.

By coonass at 5:06 PM ON 07/03/08

This looks like it COULD be cut-n-paste work from Print Shop or something like it. I'd be more impressed if these guys had posted video (although that, too, can be faked, it'd be harder to make a convincing fake, and easier to spot how they faked it).

By zzdakota at 11:22 PM ON 07/04/08

The 19 year old spent most of his time overseas in Singapore, Hong Kong Thialand with his parents and that is his target mainly, overseas with the design he chose. He wasn't targeting the US or his home country of Canada really according to the interview I read elsewhere. He also had some help from someone from MIT to help him sort out the computer program. there is no turning at all, all body lean like the Segway.

By Lordnork9 at 10:22 AM ON 07/05/08

Well in one of the pictures it shows one of the guys riding it and its blurred in the back of them that means either there is a guy in another car and took the picture or this is one illaberate hoax

By bebo94 at 4:35 PM ON 07/06/08

I would just go with a zero motorycle (www.zeromotorcycles.com). It exists now, has a 40 mile range, and is only about $500 more than it's gas counterpart. Easy to make that difference up with the maintenance savings.

I have ridden one an it is an acceleration junkie's dream or you can dial it down to be tamer for the street.

There is a street legal version in the works.

By wizzie at 8:04 PM ON 07/10/08

Hi all.
Could this be any more BRAINLESS???
Having driven approx 850,000 miles and approx 200,000 miles on various motorcycles in the 57 years i have been alive you couldn't get me on one of those things in a MILLION years.
If you have a blowout You Are Seriously F.u.*.k.e.d (YASF)
If you hit a patch of ice YASF
If you are in a turn and hit a wet spot with oil YASF
If you have to stop really quickly YASF
If you have to lay it down YASF
If your on board gyro-stabilizer goes out YASF
If a bearing goes out YASF
I could name lots more, and yes these can be very dangerous on the two wheel (motor cycle) version but you have a bit more of a chance with the 2 wheel!

By sympul at 3:48 PM ON 07/20/08

Considering that most of the people that comment on these articles are tech / gadget junkies, I find it amusing that people bother to ask 'WHY did he build this?' The answer has to be 'because he had an idea and wanted to see it through.' As with any new form of transportation, there is bound to be safety issues, and there will also be the die-hards who don't want to change from something they already know and love. (ie: the motorcycle) Screw both of them. If we never took safety risks and never moved on to something new, we'd still be WALKING!!

The Kid had an idea, built it and wants to show it off. Think of it more as a working prototype / concept then a factory produced machine. Oh, and if he has the ballz to ride it, then I guess the safety issues aren't that bad.

By Monkey at 4:14 PM ON 07/25/08

Looks like a waste of money...Boring

By Miniman at 1:25 AM ON 08/01/08

I don't know why everyone thinks that starting and stopping would be a concern. This thing is nothing more than a Segway with the wheels moved closer together and the body reshaped. You don't see Segway drivers having any problems starting or stopping. It's the same thing.

By KARAN at 8:12 AM ON 08/01/08

ITS NICE AND WONDERFUL I FEEL I SHOULD RIDE IT....

By Mountainman at 5:45 PM ON 11/11/09

if youused independent suspension for the two wheels you could just lean and let them slide by each other. that is how one of the piaggio scooters works.

By madzzzzzzzzz at 10:58 AM ON 01/19/10
