Sony announces new 80GB PS3 for $400

80gbps3.JPGSony has just announced a new addition to the ever-changing Playstation 3 lineup: an 80GB model. The new 80GB Playstation 3 won't come bundled with any games, but it will come with the new, fancy DualShock 3 controller, which brings rumbling to the next-gen console. What isn't clear is how well it'll handle backwards compatibility — that is, playing Playstation 2 discs — as previous models haven't been too consistent in that regard.

It's due to hit in September for $399. Undoubtedly, it'll be unceremoniously yanked from the shelves for another minutely updated version not too many months later. Hey, Sony knows what they're doing, right? Let's just trust them on this one.

Jack Tretton clearly said that it will have the same fucntionality as the 40GB console but with an 80 GB hard drive, nothing changes except the drive capacity.

Seems like a better deal just to pick up a 40 gig and upgrade the HD yourself.

But I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
