Six50 is a hybrid vehicle with a solar panel on top

mindset4.jpgCombining solar power with electric power to run eco-friendly cars seem to be the new "in" thing to do, what with gas prices making driving a downright painful experience these days. Despite the fact that solar panels aren't really efficient enough to give much power to a car, auto makers will probably start slapping them on vehicles to make people think they'll be more fuel efficient.

The latest entry in this new genre is the Six50 by the Swiss company Mindset AG, designed by a former Volkswagen designer. It's still a prototype, but they plan on pumping out about 10,000 of these guys next year, each costing about $78,000. That's pretty steep for an untested model, but hey, your mileage may (literally) vary.

That looks like a cross beteen a delorean, an AMG, and a Mini - very odd and very expensive - but good effort - keep working

this is cool and all, but aren't we focusing on the wrong end of the issue here? It's all well and good to build an electric car, but at the end of the day you still need to plug it in (even with the solar panels) and the primary source of that power is still petroleum or coal. what ever happened to this? http://dvice.com/archives/2007/07/17/solar_cells_get.html
Now that's the right end to focus on, start with producing a cheaper and cleaner source of power then change the paradigm of fuel usage (from gas to electricity).

Just my 2 cents for what it's worth.

I guess the cars have to start high end before I see it on the low end for even buying a car like this. I don't get it. People are clamoring for a new car that's close to 50mpg and the market is not there or even close yet? Nobody wants to go up against big gas co's?
